How to properly sew up a hole in jeans (on the knee, butt, between the legs)?
The question of whether it is possible to somehow quietly sew up a hole in jeans actually worries many. Denim is a durable material and can last for many years. It’s especially offensive if your favorite comfortable denim pants, which, moreover, fit beautifully, are torn. Don't rush to throw them away! There are several options to solve the problem. Next, we will tell you in detail how to restore jeans so that they look like new.
Method used in the studio
Not everyone knows that jeans that are torn and frayed between the legs are repaired in a sewing studio. Even if at first glance they are hopelessly damaged, professionals in their field will bring them into proper shape. The technique can also be used at home. It is simple and does not require special skills.
To work you will need:
- sewing machine;
- adhesive patch (“cobweb”, doublerin);
- iron;
- an oblong hard object that fits into the leg of jeans;
- scissors;
- threads of 2-3 colors.
It is worth mentioning that there is one secret in the technique. To mend a fray or hole unnoticed, you need to choose the right thread color for your jeans. It is wrong to use one blue or even more so a black thread. Typically, jeans use 2 shades of fiber - light and dark. We select exactly the same threads, take a gray “gossamer” for dark jeans, and a white one for light ones.
Let's get started:
- If the jeans are wrinkled, iron them.
- Cut out a patch from the glue “web”. Its radius should be 1–1.5 cm larger than the hole.
- Place the patch on a hard object and insert it into your trouser leg. We check that it lies evenly on the wrong side.
- We tighten the edges of the hole as much as possible (the jeans should not bulge). If there is a fringe, carefully cut it off with scissors.
- Using a hot iron, iron the front of the jeans in the patch area. Press the iron for 3-5 seconds several times so that the glue is sure to flare up and set.
- Let's move on to working on the machine. First, insert threads of a light shade and sew frequent lines perpendicular to the hole. Stitch length – 2.5 mm.
- Take the next color of thread and again sew frequent even lines perpendicular to the light ones and on top of them. It turns out to be an imitation of denim fabric. Light stitches are usually made in the direction of the warp, and dark stitches are made in the direction of the weft.
In this way, you can beautifully and imperceptibly stitch up jeans if the fray or hole is on the butt, knee, or near the waist. The exception is when the pants are torn at the seam. Then a regular stitch is laid on the machine. You just need to continue the broken line from the wrong side.
If you don't have a machine at hand
Coping with the task manually is somewhat more difficult. You will have to be patient and persevering. The scheme for mending jeans without a machine is as follows:
- We use a patch of dublerin to solder the edges of the hole. We apply it to the wrong side, and go through the front part with a hot iron. As an alternative, you can use a piece of regular fabric - ideally denim in the same color, but any other color will do. The flap is basted around the hole. The torn edges are also tightened with a basting stitch.
- The most important and time-consuming stage is sewing the leaky area with stitches manually. A hand-stitched stitch is as close as possible to a machine stitch. It looks like this:
- You need to make stitches as close to each other as possible using threads of the same color as the jeans.
- In the end, all that remains is to remove the basting stitch.
If the hole or abrasion on the jeans has a large radius, it is necessary to replace the fabric by inserting a flap. There is one trick - you can take the same material from the back pocket area. You need to carefully cut out the part adjacent to the body, and stitch the pocket itself. Instead, it will turn out to be a decoy. Next, the patch is sewn around the perimeter with perpendicular frequent lines.
Alternative options
If your denim pants are torn at the knee, at the pocket, or at the bottom of the leg, it may be worth taking the chance to give them a new life. Holes can become a decorative element. Designer jeans are always fashionable and stylish!
So what can you do with ripped jeans? 5 best ideas:
- The hole in the knee will be transformed if you make it even larger and sew on lace or printed fabric.
- If the hole is exactly at the knee, you can turn regular jeans into pants with slits at the knees - just work with scissors for 2 minutes.
- Noticed the hole in the trouser leg? Do more, and more than one. Rub them with a grater until fringe appears on the edges. Ripped jeans are especially popular in the summer.
- Cut off the bottom of your jeans and make them into shorts!
- Select a decorative patch and glue it to the hole using an iron. There are some very interesting options. For example, a patch in the form of embroidered flowers or lips, a heart, the inscription “wow”, cactus, avocado, etc.
To avoid visible holes in your jeans, you need to approach the repair of the product wisely: study the technology and be careful in your work. Follow the instructions given above and you will be surprised by the results. In any case, the ability to darn will be useful in life. So why not learn it right now?
