Home palm tree - how to care for pandanus
Many people set up a real winter garden indoors. Plants not only delight with their appearance, but also provide fresh air and improve the atmosphere around. A palm tree like pandanus requires little but regular care. Even beginners can handle it, but you need to pay due attention to each action.
Main characteristics
Pandanus is a large ornamental plant and belongs to the palm trees. It is found naturally in Africa and Asia, with many varieties in Madagascar. The tropical climate is the most attractive for this flower, but certain species also settle comfortably at home.
Most Pandanus are very large palms, only a few of them will fit in a room or on a balcony, but nothing prevents you from placing an exotic green pet in a greenhouse or conservatory.
Plant species
Care at home depends on what kind of flower you decide to purchase. There are several options, each of which has its own characteristics:
- Veitch. This is a bush. Unlike an ordinary plant, which often develops like a tree, it is distinguished by its small height. With a crown it reaches a maximum of one and a half meters. The leaves mainly grow, they stretch up to 90 centimeters and branch beautifully around the trunk. Veicha invariably remains bright green. There are spines along the edges of the leaves, and white stripes in their centers. The overall appearance is very refined, which makes the plant stand out.
- Useful. This is a real palm tree, up to 20 m in height, but at home it usually does not exceed 3 meters, limited by the ceiling height. The leaves here are dark green and with red thorns along the edges, directed straight, and at the very base tightly pressed to each other. The leaves can reach 15 meters in length.
- Sandera. Such a palm is much smaller than pandanus useful, almost dwarf. Sandera leaves are only 8 cm long. In the wild, the plant lives in the Malay Archipelago. Often this is what they start at home because of the permissible size.
When choosing a specific flower, first of all, you need to take into account its size. You need to be prepared in advance that pandanus occupies an impressive area and grows well both in height and breadth. It is best suited for a greenhouse, winter garden or for interior decoration in a room with a large area.
Special care
At home, this plant requires a lot of attention. It is imperative to try to provide conditions as close to natural as possible. The main problem is often lighting. The flower needs bright light in winter, and in spring and summer the natural rays will be too bright for it, so you need to find a place where they will be diffused. An east or south window/side of the house would be optimal. In winter, additional lighting with phytolamps is used. On the south side, shading will be needed in summer, so in a garden or greenhouse, pandanus needs a shady neighbor.
The palm tree can be placed on the balcony, in the room, or taken out to the veranda or gazebo for the summer. The temperature should not fall below 12 degrees, and ideally should remain at 25.
Advice
The magazine purity-en.htgetrid.com recommends placing the phytolamp at a distance of 70 cm from the flower. You need to turn it on every day for 8 hours.
For uniform growth, it is imperative that the palm tree be turned in different directions towards the light source.
There are some nuances in watering. In spring and summer it should be done approximately once every 2 days, immediately after the upper part of the soil dries out a little. In winter the frequency decreases. Under no circumstances should you use cold water. It should be settled and at room temperature. Usually, water is left in the pan for half an hour, and then it must be drained well, otherwise the roots will begin to rot.
In spring and summer, additional feeding is needed. Usually these are mineral fertilizers. It is necessary to repeat fertilizing 2 times a month. It is definitely worth noting that the procedure is not repeated in autumn and winter.
If the leaves turn yellow
Pandanus diseases are rarely associated with pests; most often the cause lies in violation of maintenance rules. So why do palm leaves turn yellow? Such indoor plants need good lighting. If the color of the leaves has changed, then you should immediately think about the lack of sunlight. Move the pot closer to the window or turn on the lamps.
An important nuance is that on one side they turn yellow or spread evenly across the crown. If the color disappears locally, most likely the plant needs to be turned “gray” towards the sun.
Aerial roots become a serious difficulty. They definitely appear on every pandanus. Taking into account the fact that there is no proper protection and humidity from the ground, they must be monitored separately. It is best to cover them with moss and keep them moist at all times.
Transplantation and propagation
Pandanus grows quickly, even rapidly. Therefore, young palm trees require replanting every year. It is enough to move adult plants once every 3 years. When carrying out the procedure, it is necessary to take into account the sensitivity of the roots. The flower is transplanted using the transshipment method, then sprinkled with fresh soil.
Advice
To prevent the leaves from getting in the way or being damaged during transshipment, they are usually collected at the top and tied up, and released upon completion of the work.
Pandanus propagation is carried out in several ways:
- Seeds,
- cuttings,
- dividing the bush.
Each option is carried out differently. In the first case, it is very important to preserve the sprout. That is why it is first covered with glass or film. Ventilation is also necessary. After a month, shoots will definitely appear. Usually the seeds are planted in groups and separated after the formation of the first 2-3 leaves. Then the seedling is able to develop independently in the pot.
For propagation using cuttings, it is important to choose the right shoot - it must be from the side and long enough, at least 20 cm. The cut areas are covered with coal and dried. Then they are planted in a mixture of peat and sand. Similarly with seeds, you should cover them with glass or a bag, setting up a mini-greenhouse. It is necessary to regularly ventilate the seedlings and loosen the soil around them. Rooting usually takes about a month if a special stimulator is used. Without it - up to 2 months.
An adult plant can be divided. To be precise, a daughter rosette is separated from the parent palm tree when it has grown to 20 cm and has given its roots. To stimulate the development of the root system of children, you should cover it with damp sphagnum moss.
Pests
Parasites are rare on pandanus, but they can still appear, for example, by moving from neighboring flowers. There are several pests that most often cause pandanus diseases:
- Scale insects. The symptom is the appearance of brown scales. There is also a sticky discharge on the leaves. It is necessary to properly treat the entire flower with acteplic or karbofos.
- Mealybugs removed with a swab or brush. It is pre-wetted in alcohol or soap solution. Additionally, you should add Tolkox, Dicloxom or Koktsgard.
- Spider mites. They appear when air humidity is too low. Holes appear on the leaves, which gradually begin to merge with each other. A good weapon against the parasite is the actara. It is also necessary to increase the humidity: place the pot on a tray with wet expanded clay.
The spiral palm, pandanus, has an attractive appearance, and if you believe folk signs, it also has a special, positive energy. Pandanus takes away all the negativity and helps you calm down.
The palm tree is quite easy to care for and unpretentious. The most demanding only in terms of lighting and replanting. Therefore, it is perfect for those who are just beginning to comprehend the art of floriculture, or often go on business trips. Pandanus grows quickly and soon turns into a beautiful tree or a spectacular potted bush with rich green leaves that can decorate any interior.
