Homemade potato chips

Cooking chips

The classic way to prepare chips is to fry them in a large amount of boiling oil. It is relatively cheap, so it is widely used in production. But at home, you can make chips by evaporating the moisture, and the microwave is best suited for this purpose.

Cooking chips in the microwave

The recipe for homemade chips is extremely simple:

  1. Take the potatoes. Wash it and remove the peel.
  2. Cut the potatoes into thin slices - the maximum thickness allowed is 2 mm. It is unlikely that you will be able to do this with an ordinary kitchen knife, so it is better to use a potato peeler or slicer for this purpose.
  3. Place the potato slices in a deep bowl and rinse under cold running water to remove the starch. Then fill with the same water and leave for several hours - during this time the remaining starch will come out of the pulp. If the potatoes are very starchy, the water needs to be changed periodically.
  4. Remove the slices from the water and pat dry on a paper towel. They should become completely dry.
  5. Arrange the potato slices in a single layer on a glass or ceramic plate lightly greased with vegetable oil or lined with parchment paper.
  6. Place the plate in the microwave and dry the chips for 3-6 minutes at 700-750 W.
  7. After the beep, remove the finished chips and transfer them to another bowl. Before eating, you can sprinkle them with salt and spices to taste.

If you are preparing chips for the first time, turn on the microwave for 2.5–3 minutes and after this time, check the readiness of the snacks. If the potatoes are not completely dry yet, continue cooking, adding 1–1.5 minutes each. This way you will get perfect - golden and crispy - chips without burning.

Flavoring additives

Homemade potato chips turn out delicious even without salt and oil. But sometimes you want to diversify their taste, and spices and seasonings, which you can easily buy at your nearest store, will help with this:

  • dried dill;
  • garlic or onion powder;
  • ground sweet paprika (it is better to take smoked one: it has a very bright taste) or chili pepper;
  • finely ground black pepper.

It's also easy to make cheese-flavored chips - all you need is cheese powder. You can buy it online on sites like iHerb. True, the price is steep - it is much easier to prepare this product yourself by grating not very fatty hard cheese on a fine grater, pouring it in a thin layer on a paper towel and leaving it in the open air or putting it in an electric dryer. Before use, cheese shavings must be crushed in a mortar.

Crushed bouillon cubes will add the taste of mushrooms or chicken to homemade chips. Since they already contain salt, there is no need to additionally salt the potatoes.
