Kurpacha - what is it?

The exotic word came to us from Central Asia. Kurpacha is a quilted mattress that simultaneously serves as a carpet, blanket, bed, and chair. People sit on it during meals at a low table, lay it on a trestle bed or the floor. We can say that in the east, mattresses replace furniture. They give the body real relaxation, create comfort and coziness.

The bright little thing seemed to have stepped out of the pages of the fairy tale “One Thousand and One Nights.” It has a centuries-old history. Kurpachy symbolizes the wealth and well-being of the family. Traditionally, they are sewn by hand from khan-atlas or panvelvet. For the back side, colorful cotton fabric is used. The filling is cotton, which is quilted, beaten and quilted again in a fabric cover.

Kurpacha

Kurpacha's closest relatives are Russian quilts. Many families still use them to this day. Thanks to a special technique of execution, they serve faithfully for decades!

Kurpachy in a European style

Europeans did not like colorful fabrics, but the idea of kurpacha seemed promising to them. For several years now, multifunctional rugs in the shape of leaves have not gone out of style:

The original product can serve as an interior decoration, a bedside rug, a bedspread, or a blanket. It is convenient to roll it up and take it with you on a picnic. With its help, you can protect the children's area: if the baby falls, the synthetic padding layer will soften the blow.

European “kurpachas”, unlike Central Asian ones, are easy to wash. They are often waterproof. If you accidentally stain the product, it will be enough to wipe off the dirt with a damp cloth.

How to sew kurpacha from old jackets?

There are several ways to implement the idea. First you need to decide on the size and shape of the product, as well as the desired color.

Materials you will need:

  • scissors;
  • old jackets (the more the better);
  • needle and thread to match the color of the fabric;
  • braid, edging tape or just a long piece of fabric for finishing the edges;
  • cotton or other fabric for sewing a cover for kurpacha (optional).

Method No. 1 – for quilted jackets and down jackets

If the outerwear is already quilted with stripes or another pattern, you can sew kurpacha in an hour and a half:

  1. “Separate” the jacket: open the sleeves, back, hood, remove the zipper, decorative elements and fasteners.
  2. Trim the rounded parts of the parts so that you get squares and rectangles.
  3. Sew them together, choosing colors.
  4. You need to make two canvases of the same size and shape.
  5. Place the pieces right side together, wrap with edging tape around the edge and sew.

To sew “kurpacha” in the shape of a leaf, you can use the template:

The easiest way to sew such a rug is from two rectangular pieces. To do this, you need to fasten them together slightly obliquely, forming “veins”. Next, all that remains is to shape the rug into a sheet and finish the edge.

Method No. 2 - for coats and unquilted jackets

Kurpachy can be made from any outerwear with insulation. The only thing is that if the material is not quilted, you will have to sweat and quilt the product yourself.

  1. Disassemble the down jacket into parts.
  2. Sew into canvas.
  3. Draw a fine grid (pattern) or glue strips of tape:
Marking the future kurpacha with tape
  4. Quilt according to the intended pattern.

If the jackets are multi-colored, you can sew a blanket from them using the patchwork technique. Bright geometric patches look especially fun and stylish.

Method number 3 - with a cover

Many people prefer bedding made from natural fabrics. In this case, the old jacket can be used as soft filling.

We do everything according to the classical scheme:

  1. We rip the jacket, cut out the squares and overlap them.
  2. We sew a cover from the fabric you like.
  3. We insert the mattress from the jacket.
  4. Quilting.

How hygienic and safe are kurpachas made from old jackets?
What else can be made from a down jacket?

Old jackets take up a lot of space. It is not surprising that many people want to get rid of them as quickly as possible. Perhaps there is no need to rush so much. If you are at least a little handy with a needle and thread, a down jacket can even turn into furniture.Kurpacha will replace your carpet, blanket, mattress, bed, chair, and will become a real decoration for the nursery and hookah bar! Or maybe he will inspire you to build a trestle bed - an oriental gazebo?

How do you feel about repurposing old things?
  1. Caeneus

The trestle bed is not a gazebo, but furniture. Hard sofa.

  2. Tatiana

Our old jackets are only enough for a kurpacha for cats, do they also have the right to a decent kurpacha?

  3. Inna

What I see in the photo is not made from old jackets. That's for sure. It can be seen by the quality, uniformity of the fabric and the absence of joining seams. The theory and idea are good, but I would like to see real photos of a real master.

    • Sveta

      Yes, that's right, you say

  4. Natalia

Thank you. I came across the article in a timely manner; it is necessary to make similar ones for a bench and a swing at the dacha.

    • Lyudmila

I completely agree with you - the swing is just right, I support it. And most likely I will follow your idea. Thank you

  5. Marina

These women are from the village of Rumon in the Sughd region of Khujand, former Leninabad.
    She is truly a craftswoman.

  6. Inmaculata

Down jackets are usually filled with down. Quilting down is also a pleasure... The maximum is a “thought” pillow.

  7. Olya

Have you flogged at least one down jacket??? what a mess, afftor? show your work! no need to start chatting!

    • Margot

A down jacket is also called one with artificial filling, and not necessarily down. The holofiber in the jacket is already quilted, all that remains is to quilt the outside. Try making a small quilted item. On a chair, stool, pet bed, for bedding on the floor under the knees or for sitting while performing floor work.

    • Tatiana

      Right

    • Masha

Actually the author, not the author

    • Sveta

      Yes, that's right, you say

  8. Isolde

Not a single picture matches the description, show at least one that is made from old stuff. Well, we’re a smart people, we’ll quickly get blown up and get caught up in this bullshit.

    • Tatiana

      Right

  9. Elena

And the top of the jackets is usually synthetic raincoat fabric, which is not at all pleasant when in contact

    • Margot

If you use it as a blanket, then yes. If it's on the floor, that's fine. In addition, if desired, you can use other suitable material. Regular cotton wears out quickly. And feel sorry for your hard work quilting! I don’t want to repeat it again so quickly.

  10. Turkic seamstress

This is not a “Central Asian mattress”, but a product of the Turkic peoples: Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Crimeans, Tatars, Bashkirs, Bulgarians, Chuvash, Mari, Altaians, Nogais, Uzbeks, Khazars, and many others. It is sewn from fabric scraps, from wool. Only feather beds and pillows are made from down.
Stop calling him “Kyrgyz”, don’t you call yourself “little mermaid”?? Or RusaK. A good name, as is Cossack. So little mermaids and mermaids, don’t make my horseshoes funny. Only an old jacket is made from old jackets. And not a work of art made of pure wool, a body assembled by hand, fabric in patchwork style, assembled with caring hands, selected according to the pattern and color and offered to respected guests in the place of honor TORE, at the head of the dastarkhan. We give the old jacket to dogs or sheep and insulate their homes.

    • Love

Right. Let's respect and love each other

    • Julia

For example, English, Italian, Ukrainian speak Russian, and there is no name-calling involved. It’s not clear why “Kyrgyz” seems like that to you) An ordinary word. As for the content of the article, it is clear that from old jackets it is proposed to sew not a work of art for honored guests, but a rug for the floor or for the dacha, etc.

  11. Elena

I really liked the films. Women do wonderful things. Very beautiful!!!! And Uzbek silk is a miracle...

  12. Tatiana

If your hands grow from where you need to, you can sew them, thanks for the idea, I’ll have to try

  13. Elena

Good idea. I sewed a small kurpacha for a cat. Looks very good.
