How to iron a leatherette product: 7 best ways to iron a jacket

The only drawback of leatherette is that it is not as flexible as genuine leather, and if stored improperly, it will remain dents and creases. Then it becomes necessary to smooth it out.

Leatherette

Is it possible to iron leatherette leather?

In most cases, an artificial leather product can be ironed. But it is important to follow some rules.

  1. It is mandatory to test the leatherette. To do this, all actions are first carried out from the wrong side. If the area is not deformed, you can start ironing.
  2. The product is turned inside out. It is important that the material does not come into contact with itself. For example, if you need to iron a jacket, then you should put a roll of fabric twisted inside the sleeve.
  3. If the lining on the product is too thin or completely absent, then a thin cotton fabric should be placed on top.
  4. Next, the iron is set to a mode - the steam function is turned off, the temperature for ironing wool or silk is selected, that is, no more than 30 degrees.
  5. After the iron has heated up, you need to smooth out all the irregularities and folds with gentle, light movements.
  6. The ironed product should be immediately turned right side out and given volume. You should put a pillow or towel in your bag and hang your jacket on a hanger.
  7. After 1 hour, the item can already be used as usual.

Advice

Some types of artificial leather cannot be ironed. Before using this method, find the label on the product and read the care instructions.

Steaming with an iron

Steaming

For those who are afraid to use an iron, there is another way to smooth leatherette. To do this, you will need a special steamer or iron with a steam function.

  1. As with ironing, it is best to iron a small area of the leatherette first to see if the smoothing method is suitable.
  2. An artificial leather product is given volume; it is better to put the jacket on a mannequin. If it is not there, hang it on a hanger and put rollers in the sleeves.
  3. Problem areas are sprayed with steam for a few seconds. The distance should be at least 10 cm. Do not touch the leatherette with your hands, otherwise stains will remain.
  4. After complete cooling (about half an hour), the item can be used for its intended purpose.

Advice

If you don't have a special steamer, you can use a hair dryer. In this case, the air stream should not be hot, but warm, and should be directed from a distance of at least 30 cm.

Water

Smoothing with water

As a rule, things made of leatherette straighten out a little on their own after a certain time. But if you need to speed up the process, you can use plain water. How to do it?

  1. Lightly warm the water to room temperature and pour into a container with a spray bottle.
  2. Turn the jacket inside out and hang it by the shoulders. The hanger must be exactly the right size, otherwise the product may become deformed.
  3. Spray the lining with water from a spray bottle. The material should be damp, but not wet, and water should not flow in a stream.
  4. Leave the product to dry for 12 hours at room temperature.

Advice

Avoid drafts in the room and do not use electrical appliances to dry your jacket faster.Wet leatherette is very sensitive to temperature changes.

Glycerol

Traditional methods

Our grandmothers tried to iron leatherette using these methods. They are completely safe, suitable not only for artificial, but also for natural materials.

  • Hang the jacket on the trempel and secure it above the bathtub. Then draw hot water and close the room for several hours. Next, the item should be thoroughly dried in a room with dry, cool air.
  • Go for a walk in rainy (under an umbrella) or foggy weather. Increased humidity will help smooth out the leatherette, and in just 2-3 hours it will be perfectly smooth.
  • In a small container, mix 5 tbsp. l. 9% table vinegar, conditioner and water, mix thoroughly. Apply the resulting mixture to the areas that need to be stroked using a spray bottle. There are no traces or smell left, and the result is almost instantaneous.
  • Moisten a clean soft cloth with glycerin and wipe the jacket. Hang the product on the trempel until completely absorbed, then repeat the procedure 2-3 times. You can also use any colorless shoe polish.

How to increase the service life of leatherette?

To keep faux leather clothes looking good for as long as possible, it is important to follow the rules of caring for them. What can and should be done?

  • Find the label and study the information on it. You will be surprised, but some leatherette products can even be machine washed (at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees).
  • If washing is prohibited, dirt must be removed using a soap solution and a microfiber cloth. To prepare the solution, it is best to use a special product for such products or a regular washing gel that does not contain bleach.
  • Even if there is no visible dirt, it is recommended to clean the product from dust with a damp cloth approximately once every 2 weeks.
  • To avoid wrinkles and deformation, leatherette clothing must be stored on a trampoline of the appropriate size.

What can't you do?

  • Wipe the material with a brush or hard cloth.
  • Dry the leatherette in the sun, radiator or using electrical appliances.
  • Use any leveling methods without first testing them on a separate area of skin.
  • Wash the product in a washing machine if prohibited by the manufacturer.

Smoothing leatherette at home is quite simple. However, if you are unsure of your abilities, you can always turn to dry cleaning specialists. Thanks to their experience and knowledge, they will be able to iron the product without causing harm to it.
