Why you can’t open windows after wallpapering: the secrets of perfect walls

You should not open the windows when you are gluing wallpaper, as even a slight breeze can lead to deformation of the canvases or their peeling off from the walls. The drying process should take place slowly, without temperature fluctuations. It is equally important to take into account the features of the finishing material. Only in this case the work will not go down the drain.

Open window

Paper wallpapers and their advantages

For many decades, paper wallpapers have been the most popular. There were no difficulties with gluing them. The only inconvenience is that such material takes a long time to dry; it should be carefully smoothed to remove air. Any draft or sudden temperature change disrupts uniform drying, the canvas swells, becomes deformed, and it is possible that it will come off the wall. Therefore, it is customary not to open the windows during pasting and until the wallpaper is completely dry.

Paper wallpaper

To ensure high-quality wall coverings with paper wallpaper, it is recommended to adhere to the following rules:

  1. At normal air temperatures, paper-based canvases require half a day to dry. But for complete drying, you should not open the windows for two days.
  2. Exposure to a fan or air conditioner also has a negative impact on the quality of the coating. Their air currents do not allow the canvas to dry evenly. Heaters are also not advisable, since they will not be able to heat the air equally over the entire height of the wall.
  3. You should not change the air humidity in the room in any way. Glue fumes increase humidity. The room will be stuffy, but this will help the wallpaper dry evenly.

Wallpapering

Advice
To make sure that the paper wallpaper has dried well, just try it with your hand. If the canvas is dry, wait a few more hours without airing, just to be on the safe side.

Features of non-woven wallpaper

The rule that it is forbidden to open windows after wallpapering on a paper basis also applies to non-woven wallpaper. In this case, drafts in the room should not be allowed even longer. You need to wait about 6 days, as non-woven fabric dries more slowly.

Experienced experts say that drafts are not so bad for non-woven wallpaper. The top layer of this coating does not get wet. Therefore, if the air temperature outside is not very different from the indoor temperature, then a slightly open window will not spoil the quality of work. But still, you should not create large drafts and sudden changes in temperature.

non-woven wallpaper

Advice
Only a draft directly in the room where the renovation is being done can negatively affect the wallpaper; ventilation can be done in neighboring rooms.

Nowadays, high-quality compounds are used that will not allow the fabric to peel off, but will not protect it from bubbles or wrinkles. Therefore, you should avoid exposure to fresh air, which will interfere with uniform drying. It is also not recommended to artificially help the canvases dry; this process should be natural.

And a few more tips

It is preferable to start repairing and wallpapering walls in the warm summer, then drying will be faster. Before starting work, it is recommended to bring the room microclimate to the optimal value. It is better that the air temperature does not exceed 25-30 degrees, otherwise the adhesive composition will dry too quickly, and you will have to coat the dried areas of the wallpaper all the time.

The walls should first be prepared: remove the remnants of old wallpaper, clean them of paint and dirt where necessary, and putty them so that the surfaces are smooth. Otherwise, all the irregularities will be visible under the wallpaper.

For good adhesion of the canvas to the wall, it is better to first apply a primer to the surface. It can be made from glue by adding twice as much water as when preparing the adhesive solution.

Wall putty

It is not recommended to carry out other repair work in the room where the wallpaper is drying. When installing suspended ceilings or using various power tools, the temperature rises in certain areas, and this will negatively affect the quality of the gluing of the canvases.

Advice
You should also not drill into poorly dried wallpaper: there will be torn, unsightly grooves on the wall.

You should be careful when gluing non-woven fabrics and then painting them. In this case, the material must be allowed to dry completely. If you apply the mixture to a damp canvas, then under the weight of its own weight and the layer of paint, the wallpaper may slide off the wall.

If bubbles are noticed after the wallpaper has dried, it can be easily corrected in this way:

  1. Fill the syringe with wallpaper glue.
  2. Gently pierce the swollen area with a needle.
  3. Inject glue inside and press with your hand.
  4. If swelling occurs in the corners, make small cuts and release the air.

By following simple rules and tips, you can quickly and easily wallpaper a room. The main thing is not to open the windows while working, and then the room will delight you with comfort and a beautiful view.
