Whether or not to wash prunes and dried apricots

Like any berries, it seems only logical to wash prunes before eating. Is it necessary to do this and how to cope with the task?

A little about production

Whether prunes need to be washed depends on how they were dried. If this is a reputable, well-established factory, then the fresh berries are first washed there and then sent to closed drying units. And then the snacks are packaged in closed packages that protect the dessert from dust, insects and the hands of loaders, sellers and inquisitive buyers. Often these prunes come already pitted and soft - they can be eaten right away.

Prunes hastily scattered into bags or trays are a completely different matter. No information about the manufacturer - therefore, no guarantees. It is quite possible that no one not only washed the berries, but even rinsed them with a garden hose directly on the trees. Such dried fruits will have to be washed. And here the problem arises - how??

Lifehack
If you are in a big hurry, you can leave any dried fruit, even moderately dirty ones, to cook like this. But the compote will have to be boiled for at least 15 minutes, and then strained through two layers of gauze, otherwise, even though it is disinfected, the “rot” will get into the drink.

How to wash dried fruits

Since both prunes and dried apricots shrink greatly after drying, trying to wash them with running water is useless and even dangerous: ricocheting drops will spread dirt and intestinal infections everywhere (soft berries should be especially suspected: their moisture is a haven for all kinds of bacteria).

Instructions:

  1. Arrange dried fruits in a single layer in a tray.
  2. Boil water in a convenient way.
  3. Pour over the berries and leave for a few minutes.
  4. Throw away the slightly swollen snacks (throw them in a colander or sieve so that the dirt flies out through the cells) or press with a slotted spoon and drain the water with sand and dirt particles.
  5. Rinse with a stream of filtered or boiled water, massaging each berry with your fingers, removing any remaining debris.
  6. Allow to dry under a clean cloth unless the berries are to be boiled or made into tea.

Wash it of course! I collected a parcel for my sister for 3 months - buying something more every month since my retirement, there were dates in factory packaging, there were figs and dried apricots too. And what do you think I saw when I was about to send the parcel - maggots were walking around in the packages!

They’ve already washed it without you... especially if it’s shiny. It's disgusting

Does anyone really have any doubts about whether or not to wash something before eating? No one knows. where and how dried fruits were stored, mice could run on them, beetles could crawl on them, and millions of bacteria and fungi could stick to them during storage. Wash, wash and wash... this is the only way to protect yourself and especially your children from diseases

Dried fruits when dried normally are wrinkled, dirty gray, with dust and sand! This is when they are soaked, treated with oil, glycerin and chemicals so as not to spoil - then they are clean, transparent, and no maggots eat them. That is, natural dried fruits need to be washed from dust and sand and you can cook compote. and CHEMICAL BEAUTIES NEED TO BE WASHED IN BOILING WATER, wash off the fat and glycerin, and only then cook the compote! I simply wash both of them from dust and eat them, but I have a theory that there should not be sterile products, but there should be immunity. I have never gotten sick from raw milk, unwashed fruits and vegetables (plucked, rubbed on my pants and eaten), berries from the bush, dried fruits, raw eggs, meat with blood. Not fried marinated kebab! Everyone chooses for themselves! Some people even vomit at the sight of chicken droppings!

Just the beautiful glossy appearance of dried fruits indicates that they have been treated with chemicals. And not only glycerin, but also more harmful compounds. The softness of dried fruits is also a sign of “chemistry”. Real dried fruits should be dry! Unsightly, gray, dry dried fruits are natural. However, sulfur compounds are also used when drying them. Yes, and sanitation is in question. So, all dried fruits - both beautiful and ugly - must be washed! But it's important to do it right.
Namely, first dried fruits must be thoroughly washed in COLD water. It’s even better to soak it in it for 20-30 minutes. It is cold water that dissolves sulfur compounds! And then pour boiling water over it and rinse in hot water.

Usually I just wash it under tap water, but now I’ll fill it with boiling water, as the article says.
