Rules of work: how to prepare for the process?

  • The main secret of beautiful coloring is the integrity of the eggshell. This is why cold eggs should not be placed in hot water. They must first “get used” to room temperature. The eggs can be left on the table for about half an hour to an hour or heated in warm water.
  • Before coloring, boil the eggs in salted water. To do this, add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water during cooking.
  • To evenly distribute the paint over the surface of the egg, it is important to degrease it in advance with vinegar, alcohol, or simply wash it thoroughly with soap and water.
  • It is better to cook the eggs in a large saucepan so that they do not break each other during the boiling process.
  • After coloring is complete, rub the eggs with a cloth soaked in vegetable oil. This will also further lock in the color.
  • Fresh eggs need to be cooked 3-4 minutes longer than those that have already been in the refrigerator.

Original recipes

When you are already pretty tired of classic onion skins and food coloring, the following ideas may well diversify the process of preparing for Easter.

Method 1. Marble eggs – paint with greenery and onions

One of the most interesting recipes, which surprises with its simplicity, accessibility and at the same time amazing results, is creating “marble” eggs at home.

    1. Cut the onion skins from the onions and red onions into small pieces with scissors. The more cleaning, the brighter and deeper the shade on the eggs will turn out, so it is better to prepare the coloring materials in advance.

Chopped onion skins

    1. Moisten a raw egg with water and roll it in the shell as tightly as possible.

Eggs in onion peel pieces

    1. Place a piece of gauze (15 by 15 cm) on the table. Place an egg in the center and sprinkle with additional onion skins. Wrap in gauze and secure with thread or rubber bands, creating a kind of bag.

    1. Carefully place the bags in a saucepan - preferably not a new one, since the dishes will definitely stain and ultimately be difficult to wash.
    2. Pour water into the pan until the eggs are completely submerged. Add a bottle of brilliant green (one bottle is enough to color 10 eggs). Turn on the fire.

    1. After the solution boils, cook the eggs over low heat for another 8–10 minutes.
    2. Drain the water, cool and unseal the eggs. The painted stones, reminiscent of marble stones of amazingly even shape, are ready!

Method 2. Real specks - an activity for the patient

Original coloring at home - creating specks with your own hands. This is an interesting, exciting and mesmerizing process because it uses a burning candle and melted wax.
Krapanka eggs

  1. Hard-boil eggs the traditional way.
  2. Light a wax candle. Wait until the wax begins to melt. Drip melted wax onto the egg in the form of dots in a chaotic manner.
  3. After the wax has hardened, dip the egg in food coloring (prepare the coloring solution according to the instructions on the package).
  4. Remove the egg from the solution and again drip wax onto the shell in the form of dots in a random order.
  5. Dip an egg into a different color of paint. Attention: it is important to correctly combine colors here. For example, remember that when mixed, red and yellow produce orange, yellow and blue combine to form green, and red and blue form purple.
  6. Carefully scrape off the wax stains (they can be slightly warmed over a candle to make this process easier). The result is an adorable colorful egg with colorful polka dots.

Method 3. From the world a thread at a time - we paint using floss

When every egg is the personification of a rainbow, we are talking about painting eggs for Easter with floss threads.
Eggs wrapped in floss threads

  • Wrap floss threads of different colors around a raw egg - in any shape, as your imagination dictates. The main thing is that the flowers are bright and harmoniously combined with each other. Try to fill the entire surface of the egg.
  • Boil the eggs wrapped in threads hard for 10-15 minutes.
  • Take out the eggs. Cool. Remove the threads. Voila! In front of you is a multi-colored egg, dotted with wondrous lines.

Method 4. Our format – voluminous Easter masterpieces

The painstaking and complex process of creating eggs for Easter involves the use of all kinds of decorative elements. However, this is where you can give free rein to your imagination and create true works of art with your own hands.
Easter eggs with colored sprinkles

  1. Drip melted wax in the shape of a specific pattern onto the finished paint (an egg painted one color with natural or food coloring). To do this, use a lit candle. The flame should not touch the shell, so as not to leave soot from the fire.
  2. Roll the egg with warm wax in decorative material. You can use Easter sprinkles or colored semolina. Additional elements can be glued onto the egg by hand, again using melted wax as glue.
  3. After drying, you need to lubricate the surface of the egg with vegetable oil. It will secure the decorative elements and give the egg a festive shine.

Method 5. DIY sweet pictures – paint with sugar

An interesting way to color Easter eggs is to use sugar. Eggs framed with voluminous sugar “lace” look very delicate and elegant. This noble and beautiful pattern will look harmonious on paint of any color.

The process of applying the design is quite labor-intensive, but the result is an elegant ornament.

  1. Color the egg in any convenient way - you can use both natural and food dyes.
  2. Next, apply a random design on the egg with a simple pencil.
  3. It is necessary to trace the pencil lines with a stationery knife, carefully scratching out the outline. This creates a one-of-a-kind embossed Easter egg.

Method 7. Original swirls - paint with nail polish

Another variation on the theme of “marble eggs” is a way to paint eggs for Easter with nail polish. It is important in this case to work with gloves to avoid staining your fingers. If random stains appear, you can always use nail polish remover.
Eggs painted with nail polish

  1. Take a wide, medium-depth container into which you can immerse the egg.
  2. Prepare several types of nail polish that will match the color.
  3. Pour water into the container of your choice and add nail polish.
  4. Using a toothpick or needle, carefully draw varnish patterns on the surface of the water.
  5. Dip the boiled eggs and prepared for painting into the liquid so that the design covers the egg on all sides.
  6. Place the eggs on a tray to dry completely. Unusual paints are ready!

Method 8. Creative eggs - decorate them from the inside

An original way to color eggs at home allows you to create patterns directly on the egg white.Agree, it’s unusual – you’ll hardly see this anywhere else! Just in case, let us remind you that you should not eat this egg, but it can diversify the holiday table.
Egg white painted through cracks

  1. Boil the eggs until tender in the usual manner.
  2. Remember the shell of a boiled egg until chaotic cracks form.
  3. Dip the egg into the prepared dye solution (for this you need to prepare the dye according to the recommendations on the package) for a few minutes.
  4. Remove the egg, dry and peel off the shell. The unusual paint is ready!

Method 9. “Terry” dyes - paint with semolina

The “terry” effect is given to eggs by the simplest semolina, prepared in a not the simplest way. So with your own hands you can create a voluminous souvenir that will surprise you with its tenderness.
Egg rolled in colored semolina

  1. Boil hard-boiled eggs in salted water.
  2. Pour 100 grams of semolina into any container and add a few drops of liquid dye, depending on the desired color intensity. It is important in this case to use liquid food coloring, since in this case the concentration of the coloring substance will be just optimal. Dry dye diluted in water can cause semolina to swell, and glued lumps are no longer suitable for decorating eggs. Next, you need to thoroughly mix the resulting substance.
  3. Prepare other semolina colors in the same way.
  4. Beat the white of one egg with a mixer, whisk or fork. The protein will become the glue for the semolina.
  5. Coat the egg with white using a brush.
  6. Roll the egg in colored semolina and leave until completely dry - preferably overnight.

Method 10. Easter dessert

To the delight of children, you can prepare original and sweet dessert eggs with your own hands, which will decorate the festive table and add variety to the Easter menu.
Gelatin egg with berries

  1. Take drinks of different colors - for example, orange, cherry, apple juices.
  2. Dissolve gelatin in warm water and dissolve in heated juice.
  3. Make a small puncture in a clean, raw egg and carefully shake out the contents.
  4. Rinse the inside of the shell thoroughly with running water. Place on a baking sheet and heat the shells in the oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes.
  5. Using a syringe, pour juice and gelatin into the puncture in the shell.
  6. Place the pieces in the refrigerator until completely frozen, about a day.
  7. Carefully peel the shells and delight your child with bright jelly eggs, which the baby will surely enjoy with pleasure, especially if he himself took part in the preparation.

Method 11. Classic decoupage - pictures from the exhibition

Among the interesting ways to paint Easter eggs at home, decoupage stands out. Beautiful napkins can be used not only for decorating souvenir dishes or furniture. The decoupage technique is ideal for decorating Easter eggs in an original way.

  1. Choose a beautiful paper napkin and cut out your favorite design or design. Remove the top layer.
  2. Beat the white of one egg thoroughly with a whisk or fork. This will be improvised glue.
  3. Brush the egg white in the place where the picture will be glued.
  4. The pattern must be placed on the egg and, using a brush, apply a layer of protein on top from the center to the edges, smoothing the surface of the pattern.
  5. Dry the egg. A beautiful Easter souvenir, decorated with interesting pictures, will please your loved ones!

Method 12.Not shaving foam

This unusual DIY egg dyeing option involves an unconventional use of traditional items.
Eggs colored with shaving foam

  1. Squeeze a small amount of shaving foam onto a flat surface.
  2. Drip industrial dyes into the foam on top in a chaotic manner.
  3. Draw random patterns on the foam with a stick, toothpick or regular fork.
  4. Dip the egg into the foam and roll it on all sides so that the pattern tightly fills the entire surface of the shell.
  5. Place on a paper towel and leave the egg to dry for about an hour.

Any egg coloring process will become even more fun if the whole family gets involved. It is especially interesting to act as helpers for children! They will be happy to take part in the process of creating Easter souvenirs and decorate them to their taste. At the same time, they will be able to get acquainted with wonderful Orthodox traditions and gain useful experience - to create and give goodness!

Girls, if you paint Easter eggs, then they should be “thematic” colors and patterns, and not any pretension to art

  5. Natalia

  6. Irina

I liked all the options and advice. I will make decoupage, just right for children. Our children go and say Christ. But we have the 5th floor, too lazy to go up. And not everyone gives. My aunt gives out 2 racks of eggs every year, it’s even a shame that we don’t have that many. Thanks a lot.

  7. Svetlana

And I liked ideas number 5, 6 and 10. Eggs according to these recipes can be made with a guarantee of environmental friendliness.

  8. Larisa

    Are eggs painted for guests?

  9. Luda

Industrial dyes??? Are you out of your mind? Microcracks may still appear on the shell. Nail polish is trash! I'm all for food coloring and decoupage. Glue for decoupage is just not ordinary, I make paste ONLY from food products!

    • Oksana

      You can also have protein!

  10. Yulduz

  11. Olga

How do you wash the green stuff out of a pan?

    • Antonina

Last year I painted marble eggs with 2-color onion skins and brilliant green. True, I didn’t pour a whole bottle of brilliant green, I was afraid... The eggs turned out great, beautiful and most importantly, edible!!! There was no green smell or taste! It was a bit difficult with the pan))) I cooked them in stainless steel, even it took a long time to wash... but over time it was washed!))) I also boil eggs in onion skins, having previously tied carved dandelion leaves and various blades of grass into pieces of old nylon tights. You will have to tinker, but it turns out beautiful and original too!
