How to wash a cashmere product at home and dry it properly?

Owners of elegant products made from expensive material are faced with a problem: how to wash cashmere? Things made from it are soft, pleasant to the touch, light and warm. But caring for them is not very easy. You will have to act very carefully so as not to spoil your favorite sweater.

Cashmere items

Dry cleaning and machine wash

Before you start cleaning, you should study the label. It will most likely indicate a recommendation to go to dry cleaning. Most often, this is really the most effective and reliable way to return a neat appearance to things. But it also has disadvantages.

  • Cashmere items should be washed after a maximum of 7 wears. And the cost of professional services is quite high.
  • It is not always possible to guarantee high quality of cleansing.
  • Sometimes things after dry cleaning lose their softness and color saturation.

In some cases, going to dry cleaning will not ensure the preservation of the valuable qualities of cashmere. To avoid such situations, you can wash your sweater and even coat yourself at home. This way you can control the process. But you need to know how to do it.

Some cashmere knits are machine washable. This should be indicated on the label. You need to choose a delicate wash mode and a temperature no higher than 30 degrees. Use a detergent and conditioner designed for woolen items. It is not recommended to use stain removers.

Hand wash cashmere

Features of hand washing

Unfortunately, washing most cashmere clothes in a machine will simply destroy them. During the process, the item rolls over the drum and hits its walls. As a result, the fibers become intertwined, and the jacket loses its softness and airiness. To avoid this, you should prefer hand washing.

Before washing, remove any pellets. It is not recommended to pull them out by hand as this may damage the product. It is better to use a special machine that will allow you to do this carefully, or a cashmere comb. Next, the product needs to be turned inside out.

The water should not be hot. In addition, it is important to avoid temperature changes, which can cause the sweater to shrink. For washing, it is not special products that are best suited, but baby shampoo or shampoo for colored hair. They act gently, do not dry out delicate yarn, and help maintain elasticity. The substance must be added to the water and ensure that it is completely dissolved.

After this, you can lower the cashmere product into the solution. For best results, it should be soaked for a short time - no more than 10 minutes. If you overdo it, the fibers may become matted. Now it's time to start washing directly. An important rule: do not rub cashmere clothes to avoid deformation. Movements should be careful, the item should be gently squeezed and released.

Advice

You should not store cashmere items on hangers. It is better to fold it carefully and pack it in a special bag.

When the dirt has been removed, the jacket should be carefully removed and placed on the bottom of the bathtub or in the sink, without smoothing it out. You can press it slightly to the surface so that the water drains faster. At the same time, prepare clean water for rinsing, observing the temperature regime. Then rinse. The water may need to be changed several times until it becomes clean. It is worth adding regular hair conditioner to the second rinse: it does not have such a strong smell as fabric softeners. And it will perfectly soften the yarn, making it incredibly pleasant to the touch.

Washed cashmere sweater

How to dry cashmere items?

We figured out how to wash a cashmere sweater. The next important stage is drying the product. It cannot be hung on a clothesline or hanger, as it will lose its shape under its own weight. First, let the water drain a little in the bathroom. Then the item should be wrapped in a large terry towel to remove some of the moisture. After this, it can be laid out on a flat horizontal surface until completely dry. Do not place clothing near heat sources.

The easiest way to dry something is not convenient for everyone. In a small home, it can be difficult to find a suitable place where the cashmere product will not get in the way. But drying can take almost a day. Therefore, you can try an alternative method. On the floor or other surface you need to lay out a thick terry towel that absorbs water well. Place the sweater on it, carefully straightening it out. There should be no wrinkles left, and you should also make sure that it lies flat. Long sleeves must be folded. Then cover the top with a second towel and roll it into a not very tight roll so that the layers do not shift.

After two hours, this roll should be unrolled. Most of the moisture will be absorbed, so the product will not deform under its own weight. For further drying, it can be placed on a flat surface or even on the back of the sofa. It will take much less time than with the first option.

Washing cashmere items at home is quite possible if you are careful. And then your favorite things will always delight you with their neat appearance.
