How to properly wash Roman blinds - choosing the best method for different types of fabric
It is important to know how to wash Roman blinds. Unlike traditional drapes and curtains, Italian models are demanding in terms of cleaning conditions. In this review we will look in detail at the intricacies of caring for draperies.
How to remove Roman blinds correctly
The curtains need to be removed from the curtain rod. Models glued to adhesive tape are carefully peeled off. If the structure is secured with self-tapping screws, then the parts are unscrewed with a screwdriver. In the fasteners on the brackets, hook a spring on one side and slowly pull out the tube. It is more convenient to dismantle large products with an assistant.
Roman blinds are fixed to the frame. Before washing, the material from the slats must be properly removed. On one of the sides of the structure there are edges with incomplete deterioration. The rail is pulled out of the fabric bed with your fingers. The canvas is shaken to remove dust. Plastic boards can be washed in soapy water. Parts made of metal and wood do not like exposure to moisture, so they wipe with a damp cloth, then carefully remove the drops.
Before washing Roman blinds, you need to find out what fabric they are made of. The choice of care method is influenced by the type of material.
It is prohibited to wet products that contain:
- eucalyptus;
- tourniquet;
- paper;
- bamboo planks.
The most unpretentious models are those made from fabrics based on cotton and linen. Synthetics and satin can be machine washed. Tulle types are soaked before moving into the equipment drum. Products with tassels (fringe) and silk are washed by hand (without twisting). We recommend dry cleaning curtains made from expensive delicate materials, especially those with padding, and those with protective impregnations.
Handwash
Information about the care method can be found on the label for roller blinds. If the label is lost, then it is better to use manual technology. The optimal water temperature for the procedure is +30 C. The liquid is poured into a basin, into which detergent is added. Due to the low degree, the powder is pre-dissolved in a separate container or a gel version (2 caps) is used.
Roller blinds are soaked in the solution for 15 minutes. For old stains, the time is increased 3 times. Fat marks on the surface of the fabric are pre-treated with a concentrated dishwashing preparation (Fairy). The water is drained and replaced with new water. Detergent is added to the liquid. When working with curtains, do not use chlorine-containing chemicals, which corrode the material.
You can clean roller blinds yourself. Be sure to follow the movements, trying to massage rather than rub the canvas. The slightest tug or excessive friction will damage the weave of the threads in the fabric. For severe contamination, we recommend additional treatment with a foam sponge. The procedure is repeated 2-3 times until the dirt is completely destroyed.
Lightly squeeze the material with your own hands. It is important to rinse the Roman blind thoroughly after washing. Cool water is poured into the bath, conditioner or vinegar is added, then the cloth is lowered. The liquid is changed several times until the detergent is completely removed.
Machine washable
Roman blinds are machine washable on the most gentle cycle.Depending on the model of household appliance, the option is called “Manual” or “Delicate”. It is worth making sure that the spin and drying functions are disabled in the equipment settings. The curtains are placed in a washing bag. If there is no device, then use a white pillowcase tied in a knot.
During the automatic process, it is prohibited to place Roman blinds next to clothing, bedding or underwear. If the curtains are different colors, then wash each type separately. Recommended drum filling capacity is 50%. The closer the products are in contact, the stronger the mechanical impact. At maximum load, the curtain fibers twist, which leads to deformation of the material.
Roman blinds must not be washed in hot water (+ 90-95 C). The choice of temperature depends on the degree of soiling and type of fabric:
- Cotton. White curtains can be cleaned at +60 C, the rest - at +40 C.
- Linen. The fabric shrinks during the procedure, so the recommended range is +30-40 C.
- Synthetics. Plain types are washed at +60 C, with print – at +40 C.
- Tulle. Safe temperature is within +30-40 C.
- Satin. Colored ones are cleaned at +40 C, white ones – +60 C.
- Combined. Materials are deformed in hot water, so the optimal mode is at + 30C.
If Roman blinds are very dirty, then before washing the fabric is soaked in a soap solution with the addition of an oxygen stain remover. The liquid should be barely warm (+30 C), otherwise delicate types of fabric will deteriorate. The duration of the procedure depends on the degree of contamination. The period varies from 15 to 40 minutes. The moisture is drained, the material is carefully squeezed out, then transferred to the machine.
How to dry Roman blinds correctly
After washing, Roman blinds made of delicate fabrics (silk) are dried in a vertical position.Semi-moist material is placed away from heating devices, directed sunlight or hot air (hair dryer, from a window). Drying too quickly or exposure to high temperatures will lead to deformation of capricious raw materials. The material can be placed on a terry sheet or bath towel. During the procedure, replace the wet substrate with a new one several times, otherwise the product may sour.
Roman curtains made of tulle fabric are dried immediately on the curtain rod. First, shake the canvas thoroughly. The slats are not inserted, otherwise the material will be deformed. The curtains are carefully straightened over the baguette, smoothing out any wrinkles with your hand. If the procedure is carried out correctly, the product will stretch under its own weight. Dry draperies will not need to be ironed.
Roman blinds made of cotton, linen and satin are hung to dry. The fabric is taken out into the fresh air, to a place away from the open sun. Satin and synthetics are gently shaken, attached to the ends with clothespins and possible wrinkles are smoothed out with the palm of your hand. Under the weight of their own weight, the products are stretched, acquiring a lost shape.
How to iron Roman blinds correctly
The choice of temperature depends on the type of material from which the curtains are made. Unpretentious cotton fabrics are ironed at +200 C when dry. For Roman blinds that are too dry, use the steaming or spraying option. Linen models are leveled slightly damp, otherwise the fibers in the linen will become brittle.
To prevent the satin from stretching and losing its shine, it is ironed when completely dry. Folds and creases are removed using steam. When ironing synthetic curtains, use a layer of damp cotton material. The optimal temperature is 100 C.Crumpled tulle and silk are processed from the reverse side, always through an additional fabric.
Roman blinds are beautiful draperies with special care. The fabric can be washed by hand or machine using a delicate cycle without spinning. After the procedure, the material is dried and ironed.
