How to wash onesies to keep their shape and colors fresh?
Sooner or later the time comes to wash your onesies. And then its owner is puzzled by the question: can this be done or is it better to dry-clean an expensive item? Is it possible to wash onesies?
Kigurumi not only can, but also needs to be washed, because, like other clothes, it gets dirty, is saturated with various odors, and dust settles on it. There is no need to worry that decorative elements (eyes, nose, eyelashes, jewelry) will come off or come off in the water: if the product is of high quality, then all the nuances were taken into account during its production.
Making sure your onesie is washable is quite easy. A label is attached to the side inner seam, on which, in addition to the composition and company name, instructions for caring for the item are printed:
- A pictogram in the form of a basin with water indicates machine washing, but if a hand is immersed in the basin, then only hand washing is allowed.
- A crossed out basin indicates that after contact with water, the kigurumi will lose its attractive appearance.
Cheap and often low-quality onesies purchased on the spontaneous market or on Aliexpress are much less likely to “survive” washing. So, whenever possible, you should buy branded products.
Rules and features of washing onesies
As a result of improper washing, the onesie can fade, become pelletized, deformed, or turn into a matted rag. To prevent this from happening, it is enough to monitor the water temperature and carefully select the powder or gel.
At what temperature should one wash onesies?
Most onesies are made of either fleece or velsoft. The first material can withstand temperatures up to 40 °C, for the second the optimal value is 30 °C. There are also products made from velor - they can be washed without heating the water above 25–30 °C.
Such temperature restrictions are associated with the composition of the fabric: fleece, velsoft, and velor are artificial materials. If you exceed the permissible limit, their structure will become different - for example, fleece will thicken and lose its hygroscopicity, for which it is so valued. You can wear a onesie after washing it this way, but it will look old and worn out.
Hand and machine wash - which to choose?
It depends on the modes that can be set in your washing machine.
All onesies without exception - regardless of color, material and the presence of decorative parts - require delicate washing. In addition, these clothes cannot be twisted, which means you should be able to turn off the spin cycle or remove the item from the tank before this part of the program starts.
As for hand washing, you also need to be extremely careful here. You cannot stretch the fabric or twist it - wet fibers are pliable and deform not only in the machine.
- After completing the “bath procedures”, leave the onesie in the basin and periodically pour out the water from there.
- When the clothes are semi-dry, lay them out on a large towel - it will absorb some of the moisture.
- Only then can the item be hung on the dryer without attaching it with clothespins - it is advisable to use a regular hanger for this.
It is forbidden to dry pajamas on a radiator or over a stove, under the bright rays of the sun.
What should be the powder or gel for washing onesies?
It is better to choose a product designed for delicate colored fabrics. It will help maintain the bright, rich color of the material and avoid “shedding”.
Bleaching powders and gels, especially those containing chlorine and its derivatives, with frequent use can destroy the structure of the fibers, which is why the onesie will literally begin to fall apart.
Removing stains
Spots often appear on onesies. Despite the fact that it is impossible to remove them using conventional means, it is not difficult to return your pajamas to their previous appearance. However, you need to do this correctly:
- Spray traces of blood, fruit and vegetable juices, and wine with a special spray with enzymes.
- For greasy stains, if they are fresh, first sprinkle with coarse salt and then generously soap with laundry soap.
- Try getting rid of other stains using stain removers marked “ECO” or special detergents for washing fleece.
Only proper care of your onesies will allow you to wear these pajamas for several years without complaining that the bright colors have faded and the material has become hard and unpleasant to the body.
