How often should you change a vacuum cleaner filter: HEPA design and its service life
Is it necessary and how often to change the HEPA filter in a vacuum cleaner? Cleanliness is the key to health, and in the house a high-quality vacuum cleaner is responsible for it.
Vacuum cleaner and HEPA filter
The filter element ensures the effective operation of the vacuum cleaner and its power. HEPA (deciphering: High Efficiency Particulate Air, or highly efficient air purification) are perfect designs for fine cleaning. Hepa filters trap the smallest dust particles from 0.03 microns. The most powerful varieties will not allow even 0.5% of contaminants to pass through.
Such systems are used by top manufacturers of household appliances, including Kärcher, Bosch, Philips and etc.
What a hepa filter looks like: it is a small porous “accordion” placed at the point where the air exits the vacuum cleaner. The blocks are disposable and reusable, as are dust collectors. Disposable ones are made of paper and fiberglass, reusable ones are made of fluoroplastic with a “filling” of porous activated carbon. It is this substance that traps dust particles and absorbs odors. A reusable filter can be washed, but this does not mean that it will last for the entire service life of the vacuum cleaner.
Does this protective block need to be replaced? Certainly. And manufacturers indicate approximate expiration dates for one type or another. Even the most powerful and functional cyclone vacuum cleaner will become a useless consumer of electricity without timely replacement of filter units.
How often to change
As they work, the efficiency of hepa filters decreases due to the accumulation of a large number of microparticles. It is necessary to promptly replace them with new ones so that the vacuum cleaner does not become a source of infection.
One filter can last from 0.5 to 1.5 or even 2 years. The exact details are provided by the parts manufacturer, e.g. Samsung recommends using the design for 1-1.5 years. There are recommendations for more frequent replacement, since over six months to a year dangerous microorganisms accumulate and multiply in the unit, which, when cleaned, return to the air of the apartment.
Advice
The higher the number in the hepa name, the better it cleanses.
How to understand that the hepa filter is dirty:
- Take a sniff: there should be no unpleasant odors of burning or rot coming from the vacuum cleaner.
- Pay attention to the motor: it should not overheat and suddenly turn off. Rapid heating is the first sign of a blockage; do not ignore it so that the equipment does not suddenly fail.
- As the dust collector fills, the speed and quality of dirt suction from surfaces decreases.
You can purchase a new part for a specific vacuum cleaner model at a hardware store. Parts often fit related models of equipment; check with your consultants.
Advice from the magazine purity-en.htgetrid.com: wash the reusable hepa filter made of fluoroplastic under a powerful stream of water; it will not wash off under low pressure. Do not over-wash to avoid damaging the antibacterial fillers prematurely.
After rinsing, be sure to dry the filter before putting it back into the vacuum cleaner. But disposable cellulose filters cannot be washed; even the most powerful stream of air cannot clear dust and dirt from them.
Change hepa filters at least as often as recommended by the manufacturer.More often - please, but take into account the degree of pollution and the size of your apartment. The frequency of cleaning directly affects the clogging of the vacuum cleaner. If there are no warning signs, you don’t have to rush to replace it.
I have just such a filter in my Bosch vacuum cleaner. I stupidly threw away the instructions right away. Now at least I know how and when to wash the filter. It turns out I have a reusable one.
