Why does the washing machine take in water and immediately drain it?

It happens that an irreplaceable home “helper” seems to be working normally, but what is alarming is that the washing machine fills with water and immediately drains. The reason for such work often lies in its incorrect connection to the sewer. If the installation is completed correctly, then you need to look for a malfunction in the blocks responsible for filling the tank with liquid.

Why is it necessary to take immediate action in the event of this malfunction?

If during operation the washing machine takes in water and immediately drains, then this cannot be ignored. The washing cycle takes a long time and the sound of water pouring down the drain is continuously heard. In this case, it is necessary to take urgent action.

Continuously flowing water through the machine will increase its consumption. And the instantly washed-out powder will not be able to wash clothes and will have to be rewashed, which will additionally increase water and electricity bills, as well as the cost of laundry detergent. But it turns out that these are not the main troubles that can await the owners if they leave this problem for “later”.

If the machine constantly fills and drains water, this will lead to premature wear of its components. So, for example, the heating element will be constantly turned on, because it will have to heat the cold liquid continuously flowing into the tank. Therefore, it is necessary to find out what is the cause of this malfunction and eliminate it as soon as possible.

The cause of the problem, which you can deal with yourself

One of the reasons why the washing machine constantly drains water may be an incorrect connection to the sewer. Most often, this problem occurs when installing new equipment.

If the entire length of the drain hose is located below the tank, then the water gradually “runs away” into the sewer by gravity. The water level drops, the sensor is triggered, and the machine fills the missing volume. Due to the fact that the water continues to drain, the automation constantly collects new portions of water.

To prevent this from happening, some part of the drain hose must be raised 50 - 60 cm from the floor, that is, above the water level in the tank. To do this you should:

• Lay the hose in a “loop” on the standard fastenings of the washing machine located on the rear wall, and the remaining part can be laid on the floor and connected to the sewer in a convenient place. Most washing machines are equipped with such fastenings (Bosch, Samsung, Ardo, Indesit, Ariston and many others).
• When draining into a bathtub or sink, make sure that some part of the drain runs at the required height.
• The reason that the “helper” constantly drains water may be a partially clogged or narrow public sewer system. When water is drained on the floors below, it can be completely filled, while a vacuum (low pressure) is created above. In this case, water may be drawn from the tank into the sewer. To solve this problem, you must either place the drain in the sink or in the bathtub.

There are special valves that are installed on the drain hose. They create a siphon effect and prevent water from being sucked out of the tank.

You can, of course, make a small hole at the connection point of the drain hose, through which the vacuum will be removed, but through it a very unpleasant smell will pass into the apartment.

If it is impossible to see the location of the drain (furniture or objects are in the way), then you can easily test the machine. To do this you need:

1. Start any washing program.
2. Wait until the water fills, turn on “Drain” and press the “PAUSE” button.
3. Monitor the water level.

If the level drops and a characteristic murmur is heard in the drain, it means there are problems with the connection.

Other reasons for constant drainage of water

If the washing machine worked normally for a long time, and then problems with draining appeared, this most likely means that one of the devices has failed.

Inlet valve

The inlet valve, which is installed immediately behind the filler pipe, may have broken. In this case, water will flow into the tank without stopping. When its level exceeds the required value, the sensor (pressure switch) will work and the washing machine will drain the excess. But since the valve does not work and continuously fills with water, the automation will periodically turn on the drain.

With this malfunction, a characteristic noise is constantly heard, which is heard when the machine takes in water. In addition, the drain does not work constantly and you can hear the drain pump turning on and off. Accordingly, the murmur of water entering the sewer is also not heard constantly, but only during operation of the pump.

The inlet valve cannot be repaired; it requires replacement. It is difficult to do this on your own, so it is better to seek help from specialists.

If the pressure switch fails, the machine constantly takes in water. When overfilled, the drain does not turn on automatically. Under no circumstances should you exploit your irreplaceable “helper” if it constantly fills and immediately drains water. Because sooner or later this will lead to serious damage to the washing machine units. And if the tank overfill protection does not work, then water will flood the apartment.
