A selection of effective ways to get rid of and fight wasps
Content:
Wasps that have built a nest in the countryside next to the house or directly in it are your enemies. How to get rid of wasps? The task is not easy. When starting a war with a colony of wasps, you should be thoroughly prepared, stock up on endurance and courage. Why is the peaceful coexistence of wasps and humans impossible in principle? There are several reasons.
- A wasp damages the fruit harvest in the garden.
- She can be a carrier of infections.
- The insect causes acute pain with its bite and can attack for no apparent reason.
- Wasp venom can cause a severe allergic reaction that can be fatal.
Possible nesting sites
Most often, these insects settle next to humans. They choose places that are difficult for people to access. For example, under the roof of a house, on a balcony, loggia, in all kinds of hollow shelters, for example, in a hollow, they also live in the ground in so-called burrows. All sorts of cracks and holes in the floor, metal pipes, and voids under wall cladding in the country are good for wasps.
With the first days of spring, wasps begin to wake up after winter sleep, and female insects look for suitable places to build nests.Making its way into an apartment or onto a balcony, the wasp scouts out the situation, makes a small nest in a secluded corner under the roof and breeds there. After about four weeks, 5-7 striped babies will be flying around or near your home.
Often wasps take root not in the house itself, but near the window; they bite into insulation or wood, or even into cement mortar, and make tunnels there. And it’s so difficult to get them out of there.
Wasps get used to one place: if they appeared near your home this year, then in a year they will return again. The highest activity of these insects is observed with the arrival of autumn; at this time they are very angry and often sting for no reason.
Striped villains eventually form entire colonies. An insect's nest often looks like a ball with holes and passages, which is attached on one side to something solid (for example, a wall under a roof).
How should you behave when meeting a wasp?
Following simple rules will help you avoid serious consequences from meeting a wasp:
- Do not make sudden movements when you see a wasp, do not fight it off with your hands. This might make her angry. It is better to behave calmly and not move.
- Walk with your bare feet on the ground with caution and do not go close to old hollows. Wasps can live in the ground and tree hollows.
- Insects love moisture, even drops of sweat attract them. After bathing, dry your body quickly to avoid attracting wasps.
- If you are relaxing in the country, make sure that all sweets (fruits, juices, candies) are hermetically sealed. Don’t tempt the sweet-loving wasps.
Well, what if your encounter with a wasp ended in a sting? Take the necessary measures.
- Remove the sting if it remains at the bite site.
- A piece of ice will help relieve swelling.
- You can apply prednisolone ointment or apply a bandage soaked in a soda solution (100 g of water plus a teaspoon of soda).
- Folk remedies are also suitable: garlic, parsley or onion.
- Just in case, keep medications nearby that relieve an allergic attack (for example, Suprastin): a person does not always know that he is allergic to wasp venom.
- Call an ambulance if the following signs appear: swelling of the face, convulsions, rapid pulse, bronchospasm, pain in the heart, joints or lumbar region. Delay can be deadly.
Let's start a war with wasps
For starters, you can try to prevent unwanted guests from entering your home. When building a house or carrying out renovation work, consider where there may be potential places for wasp nests (in the attic, under the roof, under wall cladding), treat them with special preparations to kill and repel wasps.
You can purchase special repellers (simulators of wasp nests) in the store. They look very much like a house for striped villains. If a female flies to your house for reconnaissance, she will understand that the place is already occupied.
A folk remedy for prevention: you can hang a bunch of red pepper near the roof of your house, it will repel harmful insects. Regular table vinegar is useful for the same purpose: if you spray it on curtains or furniture fabric, wasps will not want to visit your home.
If you fail to scare away the unpleasant creatures, you will have to take drastic measures.
Advice
Only the complete destruction of the wasp den will rid you of wasps once and for all. If you begin to exterminate only the inhabitants of this nest, then the surviving family members will certainly return and revive the clan again.
How to get rid of wasps if the colony of striped insects in the country has grown very large? You should not risk yourself; it is better to seek help from specialists (exterminators).
Basic methods of struggle
The fight against wasps should be carried out in two directions: killing individual individuals and destroying their nests.
We set traps and lure
You can buy a device for catching wasps in a store or make a trap yourself (it will be no worse). How to make?
Choose a suitable container: it should have a narrow neck so that once the wasp gets inside, it cannot get out. Fill the bowl with a sweet, fragrant, viscous liquid (honey, old thickened jam). You can use a plastic bottle. After cutting off the top part, turn it upside down and insert it into the remaining bottom part. By placing sweet bait in it, you will catch many wasps. Lubricate the edges of such a trap with oil; the striped sweet tooth will easily slide into the funnel formed from the bottle. If you add poison to the treat for wasps, then the miraculously escaped individuals will not be able to fly far.
How to remove wasps from the balcony? There is one simple and successful option for catching wasps. Treat watermelon or melon peels with a toxic substance (but without a strong odor!) and place them on the balcony near the wasp’s nest. Having tasted the sweet poison, the striped guests will die themselves and destroy other members of the wasp family, bringing the poison into their home.
Build a drinking bowl for wasps. Place a fragrant flower in a pot in a container with water. Add an odorless insecticide to the water. When the winged creatures want to drink water, an unpleasant surprise awaits them.
Using brute force
You can fight a wasp with a regular fly swatter or something you can swat it with.If there are few wasps in the house, and you are confident in your abilities (after all, the wasp may be faster and then it will defend itself), then good luck.
Dangerous insects can be sucked up with a vacuum cleaner. This method is especially good when harmful creatures have not yet fully woken up and behave sluggishly.
Making homemade poison
Mix mint oil with water (30 drops of essence and 500 g of water) and spray the wasps with this solution. You can add liquid soap to the spray bottle to help the peppermint oil stick to the insects better.
Spray the pests with dishwashing detergent diluted with hot water. If you use a hose, you can even get rid of a wasp's nest.
A few words about self-defense measures
Wasps are dangerous opponents. When engaging in battle with striped villains, do not forget to protect yourself. These insects are very aggressive and unpredictable, be extremely careful when fighting them, if you are not very confident in your abilities, it is better not to mess with the striped horde.
If you decide to defeat your opponent, get yourself some special protective clothing. Choose thick fabric, thick leather or rubber gloves, and have a hood and mosquito net on your head. Every millimeter of skin should be covered, especially take care of your face (to avoid anaphylactic shock from possible bites).
If you are going to remove a wasp nest, remove children and pets from the house. Also, make sure that your first aid kit contains the necessary medications to provide first aid for bites of dangerous insects (suprastin, ointment with prednisolone, adrenaline). Have some pieces of ice nearby.
Getting rid of wasp nests
To figure out where the striped neighbors have set up their homes, follow the flying wasps or put bait for them on a plate. When they fly in to feed and take some food with them, you will see where they take the prey.
The steps you need to take will depend on the location of the nest:
- The nest is within reach;
- The nest is visible but difficult to reach;
- The wasps' home is located in an inaccessible place;
- The insects built a nest in the ground.
The time to destroy the nest must be chosen wisely and competently. It is best to destroy it when the insects are hibernating: the home of the striped family is empty, and no one will be able to harm you in the process of your actions.
The work of the liquidator must be done at night, when all the inhabitants of the nest have gathered in one place and are sleeping peacefully, not suspecting anything. This way you can destroy the house and kill the residents. If you do this during the day, when the wasps fly away from the nest for food, then the angry creatures, not finding their home upon return, will give you a good thrashing. They will start a new nest, and the fight will have to start all over again.
Treating the nest with toxic substances
As such, you can use special insecticides purchased in the store. You can also treat the nest with diesel fuel or gasoline, spraying the substances on the nest and surrounding area.
To eliminate a nest, ordinary dichlorvos is suitable, but it does not kill immediately; at first, the stupefied bees may attack you. Therefore, it is better to first put the nest in a tight sealed bag and, having made a hole in it, spray the product into the hole (you can do the same with other toxic substances).Seal the hole with tape, tie the bag or press it tightly to the place where the nest is attached. After some time, remove the nest along with the bag and burn it.
If the nest is difficult to reach, you can use an extension tube. It is attached to the atomizer, a piece of fabric is wound around the tube so that the tube fits tightly into the socket, and the fabric covers the inlet slots around the tube. The poison must be injected through this device.
When the nest is not visible, or it is out of reach, but there are passages and loopholes, they can be sprayed with a special spray. By inserting thin tubes, the product can be injected deeper. Close the inlet holes with cotton wool soaked in a toxic solution and cement.
If the nest is in the ground, do the same as in the previous case: pour dichlorvos, gasoline or another product into the holes and fill with cement.
Water is a formidable weapon
How to get rid of wasps without using special means? You can pour boiled water over a nest or hole in the ground. If your home is inaccessible, use a watering hose.
The nest can be drowned in ordinary water by immersing it in a large, deep container. Keep the nest in water until it gets wet and the wasps drown.
After destroying the wasp nest, you need to clean the place to which it was attached using a knife, then treat the remaining mark with peroxide, potassium permanganate solution, vinegar or insecticide. Such a control measure will completely discourage persistent insects from returning to their original place.
