Fixing a lightning bolt that comes apart in 5 minutes

Often, when we turn to a sewing studio, we waste time and money. In fact, even a child can fix a zipper in 5 minutes if it comes apart. This does not require any skills, tools, or special talents.

The zipper on the bag comes apart

Loosening the slider

A loose lock is the most common cause of zipper divergence. The metal body bends due to strong impact and does not connect the links. The zipper may come apart or not close at all.

Damaged zipper slider

The defect can be eliminated very simply:

  1. Inspect the slider from both sides. The body should hug the fabric equally tightly.
  2. If there is any misalignment, grab the lock at the weak point with pliers and squeeze lightly.

Repairing a zipper slider with pliers

It is not necessary to remove the slider. You can perform repairs directly on clothes (shoes, bags). But remember that you need to squeeze it carefully and only on the sides. If you press too hard, especially in the center, the lock will break into pieces.

Broken zipper slider

The slider is loose or broken

The zipper has a limited lifespan. With frequent loads, it becomes loose and loses strength. The maneuver with the pliers does not work, as the slider immediately straightens out again. In this case, it needs to be replaced.

How to do it:

    1. Remove the old slider. Some zippers have special grooves for this:
Grooves on the zipper for removing the slider
If there are no grooves, you should open the edge of the zipper and thus release the lock:
      Zipper Edge
If there is a stopper at the end, you need to carefully straighten it with pliers.
    2. Take the old runner to a sewing store. Ask the seller to select a replacement. It is very important that the locks are the same size and type (numbering).
    3. Place the new slider in place of the old one. Pay attention to the direction of the head. The rounded part grips the links. This is where you need to insert the edges of the zipper.

Place the slider on the fork. Then your hands will be free, and you can easily push the fabric through both sides of the lock.

  1. Sew up the ripped edge (return the stopper).

The lock on the jeans is coming apart

This happens due to the weakening of the spring of the runner locking element. In a good way, the part needs to be changed (see instructions above).

If you need to put on jeans urgently, but there is no time to change the lock, you can use the key fob ring trick. Insert the ring into the dog and hang it on the button. Now the lightning will not diverge.

Fixing the slider on jeans with a ring

If there is no such ring, you can use a piece of lace or rope. Thread it through the dog, tie it, and loop it over the button. Ready!

What to do if after repair the lock begins to jam?
In what case is it better to contact the studio?

In 99% of cases, you can fix a zipper that comes apart in less than 5 minutes. Simply press the slider with pliers. Now the lock will work as it should.

What do you prefer - to take the item with a broken zipper to the studio or to deal with it on your own?
  1. Alexey Armashev

“You don’t need any skills or tools for this”... So what, pliers are no longer a tool?

    • Vasya

He has teeth instead of teeth!

    • Vyacheslav

If there is a skew, grab the lock at the weak point with pliers and squeeze lightly, after which it can be safely thrown away.

    • Neklyudov

      very nice note
but a lot depends on the manufacturer

    • Igor

If the zipper is metal, then the side edges of the slider are erased and you still need to bend them. If it is plastic, then the zipper itself is erased (the outer sides that the slider brings together) and then the only thing is to replace the zipper. No, well, it will still serve for a short moment.

  2. VLADIMIR

Also teach me how to thread a needle. Quite a moron.

  3. Victor

Everything described here does not work for long! there is no point!

  4. Serge

Thanks to the author, the article is very useful, and the comments are funny - one doesn’t know what pliers are, the second is a moron who can’t thread a needle, the third is completely clueless.

    • Alex

After such repairs, the slider will accelerate again after 5 minutes of operation.

    • Andrey

They hung the title of the article - how to fix a zipper without tools in 5 minutes. Aren't pliers a tool?

    • One of the morons

The article is completely useless. If the zipper is broken, then just change it. All other tips should be fastened at once.

  5. Ilya

I mastered this method on my own more than 40 years ago, as a rule, the service life at least doubles, in order to extend it even more, I recommend that after the next repair, carefully rub paraffin from any candle along the links. Lightning will glide much better! No traces are left, good luck!

    • Grigori

If you don't have a candle, then soap will do.

    • chtets

I forgot about one thing, the slider used to be made of steel, but now it’s made of silumin

  6. Loch

Or you can go and buy jeans and there will be no problems

    • Mar Kot

Zhdinsy is something. And he WILL too

  7. Alex

After squeezing the slider with pliers, it is useful to lubricate the zipper with soap or a candle. The slider will make it easier to move.

  8. Serge

You need to press from the sides, if from above, at the same time!

  9. Timur

With an old runner, visit a sewing store...The area of a sewing store is 8-10 square meters, the virulence of coronavirus is 2-9 days, depending on the surface. Ask the seller to select... Oral communication with a seller who is a carrier of Covid for more than 40 seconds when he and you use PPE - probability 55 percent, if he does not use PPE 95 percent, with mutual non-use and also when communicating loudly or in a raised voice - 100 percent, with contact with a surface with which a Covid carrier has just come into contact, the probability is also 100 percent.

    • Boris Filimonov

There is no coronavirus, this is a hoax invented for fools.

    • Dmitriy

Listen, Lobachevsky, have you tried using your hands instead of a chatty tongue? You can’t be such an idiot, you’re still a male. Or do you think it's witty? Don't have any illusions...

  10. Mila

Just spraying hairspray on the closed zipper helps me

  11. Maria

Bunch of idiots and the zipper still hasn't been repaired.

    • Tamara I’m a pensioner and I’m doing great. It’s not the gods who burn the pots, don’t be afraid and everything is in your hands!

      All in our hands

  12. Max

Ass hand sofa. Take it to the master and don’t embarrass yourself)))

    • Vladimir

Absolutely right. 150 -200 rubles, and don’t spoil your nerves, don’t waste time looking for the slider.

  13. Olga

Thanks to the author. Good article.

    • One of the morons

Olga, try to fix the zipper yourself, and you will know how good the article is.

  14. Alexander

The author described everything correctly and there is nothing difficult here, but the smart guys are annoying, or rather the devils roll up the cotton wool - they themselves don’t know how to do anything, don’t know, don’t strive! And living like them is somehow not interesting, but the author shared and well done, because not everyone knew the details.

  15. comedian

Chinese consumer goods are disposable, cannot be repaired

  16. Ed

Zipper sliders are made from powder, so after compression you can get two sliders. How old is a child who can solve such a simple problem for five whole minutes?

  17. Sanya

I learned about this in first grade...and this was 40 years ago..

  18. Boris

Lately, runners have been made of silumin. The material cannot be compressed.

    • Oleg

Absolutely agree. Everyone else is squirming and being clever.

  19. Igor

The task is complicated only by the fact that the slider cannot be fully compressed with pliers. The gap must be determined and made in advance

  20. Galina

Do not lubricate zippers with paraffin or soap, because... the teeth become clogged and may break, then the zipper will need to be changed (I work in a clothing repair shop).

    • Alexander

A shoemaker I know said that you don’t need paraffin soap, just regular car oil.

    • Love

correctly said, sewing oil and wipe

  21. Sergey

If the trouser leg (at least one) is made so wide that the body can fit through it, then why not put the trousers over the head.Maybe even better and more convenient than the way everyone is used to.

  22. Marina

Thank you. Thanks to you, I changed the slider in my bag and cosmetic bag.

  23. Uncle Vasya!

If you fix it in 5 minutes, it will work for 10 minutes. It's better to change the slider

  24. Svetlana

It’s surprising that the response is only from men. I’m a woman and I can perfectly replace the slider itself. I don’t use pliers. I just go to the store and pick up the same slider.
I come and put it on already. And everything is fine!! And taking the whole thing to replace the zipper costs 500 rubles. I advise you to use it, this is only to replace the slider. Cheap and beautiful!!!!!

  25. Alexander

    Ocen poucitelno

  26. FoxMol

sometimes it can be repaired, but... the runners are made of silumin and in addition to low wear resistance, it is also fragile; if you squeeze it, you will break it 100%... the old brass runners lived...
that exit 1 change the runner and even now the handle of the leash has also become silumin and often breaks even before the wear of the lock block of the runner itself will help here it will help to make a key ring of the right size for them so it is more convenient to keep it closed for aesthetics and so as not to damage your fingers on the edge of the wire it is fashionable not to wear rings Heat-shrink it with a light and heat it with a hairdryer - it will be cool for the company, I did this back in 90

    • Yuri

Install a grammar checking program. After writing, did you try to read what you wrote? Or is everything okay for you? Then sorry.

    • Oleg

Well, comrade, I made you laugh with your grammar, thank you. A foreigner or what?

  27. GURGEN PETROVICH

  28. Agashchasblin Shtukubaksov

    The slider needs replacing.
We are promised FIVE minutes to fix it.
You need to find a store where they are sold separately from zippers > get to it > buy > return > remove the old one and install a new slider.
    Start!
    Time has passed.

  29. Nikolay

The author should know that it is very difficult to select a slider.Sometimes the number matches, and the letter is the same, but it doesn’t fit, or vice versa, it fits in freely. For each type of zipper, and there are so many of them... its own slider, and in the workshop they won’t talk to you, let alone pick you up. Place your order, pay and then please... If the slider comes apart once, it’s better to immediately look for a new one, even if you press it, it won’t last long. Their grooves are already widened, but you can’t narrow them.

  30. Oleg

It's a waste of advice, because the slider is made of plastic and you can't bend it, you can only break it, and if you bend it on one side, the other will rise. and then it will break soon, It’s better to insert a new lock,

    • I'm blown away by your comments!!! :)

“plastic runner”?! This is something new, know-how!!! :) What are you smoking, you blockhead?!!! :)

  31. Sergey

Have you tried just replacing the zipper with a new one? It helps!

    • I'm blown away by your comments!!! :)

Why bother so much?! It’s even easier to buy a new bag, jeans, jacket!!! :)

  32. Yuri Yura.

after the slider broke, as soon as I see a discarded item with a zipper, be it jeans or a bag, I remove the zipper with the slider after checking it first, now I have a lot of these sliders in different sizes for all types of zippers, and when I went to the workshop, they appreciated replacing the zipper at 1000 rub. I can replace the slider or zipper myself.

  33. al-ta

Place the pliers on the slider on the fastened part of the zipper and hit it lightly with a hammer. It takes from 5 minutes to a year. In Soviet times, it cost me 60 kopecks. and it was called zipper repair. Now it’s easier to replace the slider, the cost depends on the arrogance of the technician and the customer’s show-off: from 50 to 300 rubles. with the cost of runners starting from 5 rubles. thing. Actually, it’s called a lock, not a slider. I worked in this business for 20 years. Write, there are sliders, I can do it on a typewriter, I repair everything from old memory.

  34. Elvira

So far I've been able to cope on my own.I didn’t understand the option with a fork.

  35. Andyukha

    Everyone knows this

  36. I'm blown away by your comments!!! :)

I am sure that the authors of the comments who vulgarize the article, 90% themselves work in workshops for replacing locks, they are afraid of being left without work, and another 9% cannot do anything themselves at all, since their hands are out of their hands!!! And only 1% who said thank you and replaced themselves, almost all women and girls!!! :)
Thanks to the author of the article!!! Although I changed it myself all my life, I never wore it in a studio, but I didn’t know about the heating method.

  37. Mila

I thank the authors of the articles and videos for the useful tips. And very handy - there is a problem with the double slider on the down jacket and on the bag. I won’t take it to the studio - I’ll repair it myself. I leave articles and videos on my PC. Like, subscribe.
