Anti-corrosion paint for metal against rust: types and methods of application
Protecting structures from the influence of air and moisture increases their service life and preserves their appearance. Anti-rust for metal has a huge advantage; it completely blocks the destructive effect. This paint literally eats into the surface and creates lasting protection. The composition can be used outdoors, indoors and even in water, regardless of the condition of the structures.
What is rust paint
A paint and varnish material made on the basis of composite compositions, which can be applied both to a clean surface and to those with signs of destruction. Anti-corrosion paint for rust is produced in the form of enamel, 2 in 1 - with primer functions and 3 in 1 - with a special converter that completely stops the destructive effect.
In the manufacture of coatings of this type, different compositions are used, which largely determines the degree of protection, the possibility of application in difficult conditions and methods of application. If you need to stop the corrosion of metal and give it a certain color in a room, you can use spray paint.
For external work, materials that are more complex in composition and consistency are used. There is also paint with special components that can be used in water or on surfaces with high temperatures.
Important. It is better to start using metal compounds at the first signs of corrosion.Or use paint on new structures, this increases the effectiveness of protection and increases their service life.
Types of anti-corrosion compounds for metal
The paint has the properties of a rust, primer and enamel converter, which makes the material a universal tool for protecting surfaces. It can have a different color and purpose, differ in the main type of component and complete drying time.
By protection method
Anti-corrosion paints are divided into several groups of materials that interact differently with rusty surfaces. Knowing the basic properties of the compositions, you can find the best option, depending on the degree of destruction, conditions of use and method of protection.
How to treat metal against corrosion:
- Insulating – a heat-resistant composition based on red lead, which forms a dense film on the surface. The material is intended for use outdoors and in difficult conditions. When applied to metal, it is completely insulated from exposure to oxygen and water.
- Passivating – contains inhibitors that stop the spread of corrosion. When applied, the material reacts with rust and blocks its spread.
- Phosphating is a two-component material that has increased adhesion to metal surfaces. Has low consumption and is suitable for galvanizing.
- Inhibiting – consists of two components in the form of primer and enamel. The peculiarity of the material is that it can be applied to old coatings; it dries quickly and has good adhesion.
- Protectors are made with the addition of metal particles that are capable of restoring the metal, forming a durable coating.The material is intended for structures with large areas of corrosion used in difficult conditions.
- Converters are made on the basis of phosphoric acid, which, when applied, reacts with rust and forms a protective chemical compound. They perfectly protect the surface, do not react to water and oxygen, and are capable of partially restoring the surface.
When choosing a material, it is necessary to take into account operating conditions, thermal heating and the degree of damage - these are important factors that determine what paint to cover a rusty surface with. It is also worth paying attention to the drying time, which is important for structures that have constant contact with water.
According to the main component in the composition
Anti-corrosion paints are divided into four main categories, which determines their performance characteristics. They are divided into quick-drying, two-component and heat-resistant compounds with different applied layer thicknesses and degrees of protection.
The main components in rust paint:
- alkyd - has excellent adhesion to any surface, including galvanized metals;
- epoxy - two-component, which has high heat-resistant characteristics, but it is toxic and is not used indoors;
- acrylic – designed for interior and exterior use, is heat-resistant and has high performance characteristics;
- hammer - forms a rough, dense film, which can be used to eliminate surface imperfections and decorate.
When choosing anti-corrosion paint, it is necessary to study the degree of its toxicity.Hazardous coatings must not be used indoors, and when applying them for outdoor work, it is imperative to use protective equipment.
How to use anti-corrosion compounds
All anti-corrosion paints are applied using the same technology, regardless of the type of main component and purpose. To cover structures, you can use spray guns, rollers and brushes; you will also need metal brushes, dust removal and degreasing products.
How to paint metal over rust:
- Cleaning. Depending on the scope of work, corrosion is removed from the metal using brushes or an electric tool with grinding attachments.
- Dust removal. The surface is washed with aqueous solutions until all rust residues are completely removed. Before the next step, the metal must be dried.
- Degreasing. For work, you can use white spirit, any solvents or industrial alcohol.
- Applying paint. Manufacturers recommend coating the metal in 2-3 layers with intermediate drying.
When the composition dries, a strong protection against corrosion is formed on the surface. Modern paints and varnishes have high performance characteristics, are manufactured for different conditions of use and in a wide color palette.
