Over the entire history of the coffee drink, many recipes for preparing this invigorating liquid have appeared. By choosing the right spices for coffee, you can significantly change its taste. Spices not only enrich the taste of the drink. With them, coffee becomes more useful.

Commonly used spices and herbs for coffee

Seasonings are readily available on store shelves today. They can be added not only to various dishes, but also to an invigorating drink - coffee, without which many cannot imagine starting their day and gatherings with loved ones or friends. The spice mixture can be purchased ready-made.

For example, it could be “Seasoning for coffee and desserts” from the famous brand “Kamis”. The manufacturer packed the spices in a glass jar with a “mill” mechanism. Freshly ground spices are always more flavorful. The seasoning consists of 4 types of spices and caramelized sugar. Those who like to experiment can combine spices in their own way, changing the composition of the mixture and the ratio of ingredients.

Cardamom

In the East, cardamom is called the grain of paradise.The spice is added to many dishes, including it goes well with natural coffee, giving it a refined aroma and spicy taste. Cardamom has an interesting feature - the ability to neutralize the effects of caffeine.

Cardamom

Even those who are not recommended to consume caffeine-containing products can drink a drink with this spice. People who want to lose weight also drink coffee with cardamom; the spice speeds up metabolism and improves digestion. The spice has a beneficial effect on the body's immune system.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon softens the effects of coffee on the cardiovascular system. Spice is added to the drink to taste. It is used in crushed or powdered form. Cassia is often sold in stores under the guise of cinnamon - this spice is denser, more difficult to grind, and has a more pronounced aroma.

Cinnamon

When making coffee, it is better to use real cinnamon. The seasoning goes well with other spices, milk and sugar. It is advisable to drink a drink with this spice immediately (within 10-15 minutes after preparation); later the spice leaves a slimy sediment at the bottom.

Carnation

Residents of Arab countries love to add this spice to coffee. Today in Russia there are plenty of lovers of the spicy drink with cloves. It is not recommended to heat the spice for a long time, so it is added at the end of cooking. You can use either whole buds or powder.

Carnation

The spice does not interrupt the aroma and taste of natural coffee, but only emphasizes them. Additionally, cloves remove bitterness from the drink. The spice goes very well with orange zest. Clove enhances brain activity, improves digestion, tones the walls of blood vessels, helps during colds and strengthens the immune system.

Ginger

When brewing coffee, ginger root is added in fresh and dried form. The advantage of dried spice is that it can be stored for a long time and used at any time. In the coffee drink, ginger is combined with traditional additives (milk, sugar) and other spices.

Ginger and coffee

It is best to add ginger root during the cooking process, so its taste is revealed more fully. By changing the amount of spice, you can influence the taste of the drink, making it more tart or soft. For those who like spicy options, ginger can be combined with cloves, hot pepper, turmeric, and cardamom.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg gives the coffee drink a bitter and pungent flavor. This coffee warms, invigorates, and gives a pleasant aftertaste. The spice from the bag has a weaker taste.

Coffee with nutmeg

It is better to grind the nutmeg yourself using a mill, or by grating it on a fine grater. Nutmeg is placed in the Turk along with ground coffee beans. The spice is combined with other seasonings, sugar, milk, cream, chocolate.

Star anise

Coffee with star anise is a drink for gourmets. This spice has a second name - star anise. Star anise is the fruit of an evergreen tree. The dry pod looks like a brown star. One fruit can contain from 6 to 10 seeds.

Making coffee

For one serving, add no more than 1-2 star fragments or a very small amount of ground star anise (at the tip of a knife). The seasoning is combined with other spices and traditional coffee additives. If the spice is added in the form of petals, you need to take them out 5 minutes after preparation, otherwise the taste of the drink will be overly saturated with notes of anise.

How to make your own ready-made coffee spice mixture

The less time has passed since the spices were ground, the brighter the taste they will give to the drink. For this reason, it is better to prepare the mixture in small portions and keep it in a hermetically sealed jar. If coffee with additives is consumed frequently and is used for a whole company, you can make a larger portion.

Coffee and spices

It is convenient to grind spices in a coffee grinder. The proportions of the mixture depend on the taste preferences of the person who will drink the drink. You can add to coffee not only the above spices (star anise, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg), but also others:

  • citrus zest;
  • Bay leaf;
  • black pepper;
  • vanilla;
  • mint;
  • salt.

Very aromatic spices with a rich taste are used in smaller quantities. For example, salt, black pepper, bay leaf, ginger and star anise are added to coffee a little at a time. When making a mixture of these spices, take it on the tip of a knife. You can add half a teaspoon each of vanilla and nutmeg. Add 2-3 times more mint and citrus fruit zest.

If the seasoning will be stored in a glass jar, it should be protected from exposure to light. Opaque containers, for example, a beautiful ceramic container with a lid, can be placed in the kitchen on an open shelf, while simultaneously serving as an interior decoration.

You can add a wide range of spices to coffee, or choose 1-2 of them. For those who are just starting to get acquainted with the world of spices, it is better to use them little by little, determining for yourself how much you like a particular taste.
