How to remove glue stains from clothes without ruining the item?
It's a shame when a drop of glue ruins your favorite item. But in most cases, it can be revived if you know how to remove glue from clothes at home. Sometimes you have to clean new things: stores may put a sticker or sticker on them, and after removing it, a sticky stain remains on the fabric. In order to remove glue, you need, firstly, to know its name and composition, and secondly, find out what substances will help get rid of the stain without damaging the clothes.
Here are tips on how to get rid of different types of glue:
- PVA;
- "Moment";
- super glue (“Second”, “Cyanopan”);
- self-adhesive;
- clerical;
- epoxy;
- carpentry;
- wallpaper
How to remove fresh glue?
If glue has dropped onto your clothes, it is advisable not to put it off and remove it immediately, because over time it saturates the fabric, crystallizes, and becomes much more difficult to remove. You can get rid of glue in different ways:
- scrub off
- wash,
- clean using chemicals or special means.
Most often, to remove contamination, you have to combine two or three methods. In what sequence and by what means depends on the type of glue. Silicate (stationery), PVA, carpentry and wallpaper glue are water-soluble, and as long as they have not dried, they can simply be washed off the fabric with running water. After drying, even if only a short time has passed, they dissolve much more difficult.
- Silicate: soak in warm water with the addition of soda (2 tbsp.spoons per liter of water) and detergent for several hours. After this, wipe the stain with a sponge and wash the item as usual.
- PVA: Wipe with a lint-free sponge soaked in alcohol, then soak in soapy water for several hours and wash. You can use vinegar instead of alcohol. Another way is to rub the stain from the inside out with laundry soap, then remove the glue with a brush and wash the item.
- Carpentry and wallpaper: the stain is soaped with laundry soap and soaked in water for 5-6 hours, after which it is washed off.
It is more difficult to remove super glue and Moment, as well as traces of stickers and rhinestones. Here it is necessary to clarify that these are general names. Super glue refers to products based on cyanoacrylates - ethyl cyanoacrylate or methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate. “Moment” is a trademark under which various products are produced. Several types of products from this brand are also super glue, but in addition there is also a composition based on epoxy or PVA. How to remove the last one has already been described above - soak and wash, and the rest are listed in the list.
- Cyanoacrylates purified with two preparations: dimethyl sulfoxide (contained in the drug “Dimexide”) or nitromethane (used as an additive to automobile fuel). Dimexide slightly dissolves paint, so for dyed items, especially jeans, it must be used with caution. This preparation cannot be used for acetate silk.
- Epoxy adhesive, including “Moment”, can be cleaned using the following mixture - turpentine and alcohol in equal proportions, and also removed with acetone or solvent 646. Mixtures are highly flammable, this must be taken into account.
- Traces from rhinestones and stickers easy to clean with ethyl alcohol.
When cleaning epoxy or super glue, you need to apply a suitable solution to the stain with a swab and wait until the frozen mass softens, then carefully remove it with a stiff brush. After cleaning, you must wash the item immediately to prevent chemicals from damaging it.
How to clean artificial, dyed and delicate fabrics?
It is not recommended to remove glue from jeans and other items that may fade using strong products like acetone or dimethyl sulfoxide. By dissolving the glue, they leave behind stains that cannot be washed off. In addition to jeans, synthetics and delicate fabrics remain in question - organza, lace, thin silk, chiffon. Water-soluble types of glue can be removed in the usual way, but “Moment” and cyanoacrylate-based glue are a big problem for such fabrics, but it is possible to cope with it.
Almost all adhesives do not tolerate cold well. If you need to clean a stain, for example, from tulle or jeans, you can put them in a bag and place them in the freezer for 2-3 hours. After this, all that remains is to wipe off the resulting powder. This can be easily done with the blunt side of a knife or a nail file. If a frozen mass has formed instead of powder, it must be broken with a wooden hammer (rolling pin), and then the resulting fragments must be removed. The remaining trace can be easily removed with a mixture of ammonia and detergent.
Advice
Sometimes it is recommended to remove adhesive stains from jeans by heating them with an iron. This may bring the expected effect, but the risk of damaging clothing is very high.
Factory-made adhesive removers
The “Super Moment ANTI-Glue” product is positioned as a universal product that allows you to remove any glue.However, it should be noted that the composition contains acetone, so this drug should be used with caution, as it can corrode not only the dirt, but also the paint that was used to dye the fabric.
HG Sticker Remover will help remove traces left behind rhinestones or stickers. Just like the previous drug, it can remove paint, so use with caution. 3M Glue Remover is sold as a spray and can be used on dyed fabrics. Its action is not as aggressive as in the two previous options.
Advice
All glue removers should be tested on an inconspicuous area of clothing. If the test went well, the fabric has not lost color or deteriorated, then you can remove the glue.
Is it possible to remove dried stains?
If you get glue on your clothes, try to clean it immediately; it is quite problematic to wipe off dried glue, and sometimes it is simply impossible. If the item has been washed and ironed after being soiled, then even a trace of PVA will be difficult to remove. In such cases, you can try to get rid of the stain using factory-made products such as Anti-Glue. And even strong chemicals cannot cope in one session, and you will have to process the item several times.
If you notice that glue has gotten on your clothes, you should immediately try to remove it from the fabric. This is much easier to do than removing the frozen mass that has had time to polymerize. In addition, when working with adhesives, you need to remember safety precautions. It is always easier to prevent a problem than to fix it later.
