What and how can you remove waterproof mascara from white and colored clothes?
One careless move and your party dress, formal office blouse or new trousers are covered in mascara stains. Considering the fact that this product is becoming more durable every year, it is not so easy to wash it from clothes without damaging the material, but it is possible. First of all, you need to assess what reagents are available, because you won’t have time to run to the store.
Dried black, brown or colored stains are very difficult to remove on your own. When the situation is difficult, it is better not to take risks at all. If standard washing does not produce results (by the way, it is recommended not to load anything else with the damaged item), you should immediately contact the dry cleaner, they will definitely deal with the problem. You can try to remove fresh dirt using improvised means, which we choose depending on the color and type of fabric.
Traditional remedies and rules for their use
There are universal products that can be used to process things of any color, but only if the fabric is not very demanding on the effect. At home, you can try to wash off mascara with one of the following products:
- Laundry soap. First, the damaged product should be moistened in lukewarm water, then soaped generously. It’s good if you have on hand not ordinary soap, but Antipyatin or something like that. Next, we wash the item by hand. You can repeat several times until the stain disappears. After which you need to wash the product in a machine.
- Fine table salt. This approach is best used when working with leather or leather substitute. Mix salt and water in such proportions as to form a thick mass. We apply it to the place where there are traces of mascara. If possible, leave it for a day, after which we clean off the mass with a soft brush. Additionally, you can wipe the area with a cloth soaked in purified turpentine. We wash the item as usual.
- Borax. Reading the composition of a cosmetic product. If it contains an aqueous solution of shellac and soot, we leave the contamination to dry and go to the pharmacy for borax. Dilute a couple of grams of the product in 30 ml of water, apply to the stain and leave for half an hour. We rinse the product in warm water several times, after which we put it in the machine. In general, you can try to wash off any mascara using borax, regardless of its composition.
- Stain remover. It is better if it is liquid or aerosol. We use the product in accordance with the recommendations in the instructions, and then wash it as usual in a machine or by hand.
- Refined kerosene. The best option for treating wool fabric, even if it is very thin. We simply treat the stain, wait 10 minutes and wash. Be sure to hang it out to dry in the fresh air.
Usually one approach is enough to achieve a positive result, but if necessary, you can do several circles; the quality of the fabric should not suffer from this.
Unusual but effective approaches
It happens that none of the above is at hand. In this case, it is worth checking whether it is possible to use one of the following products:
- Mustard powder. With its help you can remove dirt even from silk. Simply dilute the dry substance with clean water to form a paste, which we apply to the problem area. We leave it all to knocking. After the specified time, we clean off the dried paste and rinse the item in cool water. If necessary, wash by hand or machine.
Tip: To remove ink from very thick fabric, including upholstery, you can use an eraser or very fine sandpaper. In this case, you will have to wait until the composition dries, after which you need to carefully rub the problem area, and the remaining greasy stains will have to be removed with one of the given products.
- Glycerol. A very effective method, especially when dealing with stains on leather products. Apply the composition to traces of the cosmetic product and carefully treat the material with a soft cloth. Wipe off any remaining mixture with a damp cloth. Please note that the color of the product may change slightly and will need to be tinted.
- Makeup remover. Simply drop a few drops of the product onto the contaminated area, wait a few seconds and rinse the fabric in clean water. We repeat as much as necessary. After this, it is better to wash the item, because... There may be greasy marks left on the material.
- Dishwashing liquid. We apply it to a sponge, with which we blot the stain until it begins to disappear literally before our eyes. Then we wait 10 minutes and send the product to the wash.
Despite the fact that the above drugs have been tested many times in practice, before using them it is recommended to make sure that the composition is safe for a particular case. To do this, apply it to the hidden part of the fabric and, after waiting a couple of minutes, wash it off.
What is the best way to treat delicate clothing?
When working with items of clothing made from capricious fabric, you need to act not only carefully, but for such products it is better to use special products. Here are the safest, but quite effective reagents:
- Skimmed milk. The liquid should be slightly warmed and applied to the problem area. We wait at least a quarter of an hour and rinse the product in warm water. Repeat several times if necessary.
- Hydrogen peroxide and ammonia. Ideal for use on delicate white fabrics. In a glass of lukewarm water, dilute a teaspoon of ammonia and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Soak a cotton pad in the resulting mixture and apply it to the stain. After a couple of minutes, remove the cotton wool and rinse the fabric in warm water.
In addition, you can use professional products to combat stains from cosmetics. You just need to take into account the fact that by putting a soiled item of clothing into the machine, you can ruin other things or increase the area of damage to the material. So it’s better to do some pre-treatment.
