Methods for testing fabric for color fastness

A bright color is not a necessary sign of a material’s tendency to shed. To find out whether things need specific care, you need to conduct a few simple experiments:

  1. We moisten a small area of fabric on the product with water, apply a sheet of white paper to it and iron the prototype through it. If colored spots appear on the paper, then the material is prone to molting and fading.
  2. We take a sample of fabric (cut it off at the seam or use an additional piece) and soak it in ammonia for 10 minutes. Rinse, dry and apply to the product. If the clothing is obviously brighter than the tested item, the fabric is fading.
  3. Pour warm water into a basin, dilute a little washing powder in it until completely dissolved (without bleaching or intensive ingredients). Soak the item of interest in the composition and leave for no more than 10 minutes. We take out the item, without rinsing, wrap it in a piece of white cloth and squeeze it well with pressing movements. If the color has switched to a white background, you will have to adhere to certain rules in the future.

Products that do not pass at least one of the test options must be washed with extreme caution, following all relevant recommendations.

Rules for washing items prone to shedding

Before washing faded items, in accordance with the recommendations on the label, you need to consider a few more important points:

  • Washing should begin with sorting clothes. Black products are separate, the rest of the colors are also better packaged according to the palette, or at least limited to division into warm and cold tones.
  • Only special preparations that preserve and fix color are acceptable as detergents. Preference should be given to gels.
  • The processing mode is set depending on the type of fabric; the temperature should not exceed 30-40ºС.

  • When washing by hand, you first need to make a washing solution, ensuring that the detergent is completely dissolved, only then is the product allowed to soak.
  • Soap and soda are not used for manual processing! They will almost certainly change the original shade of the item.
  • The use of bleaches and stain removers is prohibited. It is recommended to remove contaminants using folk remedies, such as vinegar, ammonia and lemon juice.
  • To fix the color, items can be rinsed in a weak vinegar solution made from cold water. The maximum effect will be achieved if you do this after each wash.

home remedies for washing colored clothes

  • Brine. In cold water, dilute table salt at the rate of a tablespoon of product per liter of liquid. We soak the items for an hour, after which we wash them by hand or in a machine. We rinse the product, dry it and iron it on the reverse side.

Tip: Regardless of the type of impact on the fabric, clothing should not be wrung out. It is better to wrap it in a clean white cloth and remove excess moisture with squeezing movements.

  • Turpentine. This component will preserve the color of cotton products. To get the desired result and not suffer from divorces later, you need to perform a whole range of manipulations. First, dilute a tablespoon of turpentine in 2 liters of water. Soak the item of clothing for 10 minutes. Then we wash it in cool water with washing powder and rinse in a weak vinegar solution.
  • Glycerol. Recommended for use on fine wool and mohair items. Pour warm water into a basin and dilute a little liquid washing powder in it. Soak the product for 10 minutes, drain the composition. Add water with glycerin (two tablespoons per liter of liquid), a little detergent and wash carefully. We rinse the item and dry it without squeezing.

Items that are prone to shedding should be dried in the shade with good air ventilation. In this case, it is better to turn the products inside out, which will further reduce the risk of color fading.

Saline solution helped me. I bought a red T-shirt, but it fades. I soaked it, as the article says, in a saline solution, and washed it in the machine. Nothing was dyed, and the color of the T-shirt remained bright.
