Is it possible to wash adult clothes with baby powder, and vice versa?
If you have sensitive skin and sense of smell, try washing adult clothes with baby powder. The method has more pros than cons.
Is baby powder suitable for washing “adult” clothes?
Even adults can be allergic to regular powder. Some cause skin irritation, others leave an overpowering scent. Baby laundry detergents are very soft, rinse well and have a gentle scent (or no scent at all).
There is practically no difference between the average children's and adult products, with the exception of the concentration of the detergent component. Usually there are less surfactants in children's powder, so dirt on adult things is not always washed off. If there are difficult stains, you will first have to treat them with laundry soap or a delicate stain remover.
There are also products based on soda or soap (the latter are preferred), with citric acid for bleaching (instead of phosphates). These are the most environmentally friendly and gentle washing powders and gels.
The only thing to consider is that baking soda leaves streaks. You need to sprinkle it less than regular powder, and rinse it with the same thoroughness; a double rinse mode is required (although the remains of the soda solution rarely cause discomfort).
Important
At the same time, some cheap products are only called “children’s”, but in fact they are not inferior to ordinary powders in containing allergens. Consider the price.
Is it possible the other way around?
It’s not for nothing that special products are produced for children’s things. Bleaching agents, synthetic surfactants, etc. are difficult to rinse out and can penetrate the body through the skin, causing irritation and, over time, disturbances in the body's functioning.
All this is aggravated by the fact that modern automatic machines save water, and the products are designed to not be rinsed completely - leaving a softening and antistatic effect, aroma, etc. As a result, unrinsed laundry always comes out of the drum. If you run it for rinsing with water, the whipped foam will be visible through the glass.
Important
Wash clothes of children under two years old only with special products based on soap and citric acid, or, in extreme cases, soda-based.
If you suddenly run out of special equipment, it’s better to use this life hack:
- Soak a bunch of children's undershirts with a piece of laundry soap.
- Swirl until the water turns blue.
- Let me stand.
- Then put it in the machine, adding a tablespoon of citric acid instead of powder. Double rinsing is also a must - this is standard for baby items.
Older children are no longer so susceptible to diathesis and prickly heat; substances from the skin do not enter the bloodstream so easily. From the age of three, it is permissible to run children’s clothes with an adult product, but it should be a gel (it is easier to wash out), an additional rinse is required in the program, and after the cycle is completed, it is advisable to run the laundry again, in the “Rinse and Spin” mode.
Children's laundry detergents are quite suitable for adult clothes if they are not very worn. It is better to pre-soak T-shirts after the gym with soap, the same applies to “difficult” stains. For daily washing, baby products are even preferable - they are hypoallergenic, more environmentally friendly and easier to rinse.
