Washing an old fur coat in a washing machine

Washing: pros and cons

Everyone knows that a fur item can be washed in a dry cleaner, but is it possible to wash fur in an ordinary home washing machine? Answer: yes, if it is artificial. This product is not made from real skins, but from simple synthetic fibers, so there is nothing to be afraid of. However, we recommend that you read the label information before washing to confirm that it is machine washable. As a rule, you can unconditionally wash fur from a jacket or down jacket, fur mittens and decorative items (cases, rugs). Other items must have special permission to be washed.

To wash fur, you must follow these steps.

  1. Brush the item with a brush or comb to remove dust and dirt, otherwise during washing it may become embedded deeper into the structure of the item.
  2. Set the delicate mode, the temperature is not higher than forty.
  3. Don't forget to fasten the buttons and zippers - this will keep the product in shape. To clean a fur collar from a down jacket, you must first unfasten it.
  4. After washing, carefully comb the lint.

What to do if the fur is natural? Unfortunately, it is impossible to wash products made from animal skins, since getting the skin wet leads to a change in the shape of the finished product. However, there are several effective dry cleaning methods that get rid of yellowness and stains that are worth taking note of.

Potato starch

Method No. 1

Due to its excellent ability to absorb odors, grease and dirt, bulk substances are often used to clean clothes of various types of contaminants. To remove yellowness, semolina and starch are also used as the most gentle absorbents.

  1. Lay out the fur item on a flat surface.
  2. Sprinkle the dirty area with the substance of your choice - semolina or starch.
  3. Wet the surface of the fur with water until it becomes slightly damp.

    Advice

If, in addition to yellowness, there is dirt on the fur item, try gently rubbing the fur in your palms, as if hand washing.

  4. Leave the product for a while until the fibers are completely dry. Then shake the item and brush out the grain/starch with a regular brush.

Clean light fur

Method No. 2

A less gentle way to clean white fur is to wipe it with peroxide and ammonia. To do this, prepare the following solution: a glass of water + a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide + 2 or 3 drops of ammonia. The resulting liquid can be applied to the pile both for prevention and to remove yellowness from arctic fox clothing.

Advice

If the solution doesn't handle the yellow tint well, try reducing the amount of water in the recipe.

When using peroxide and ammonia, it is important to remember that these substances are applied only to the pile, but not to the inner layer (skin), otherwise the fur coat may lose its original shape.

Refined gasoline

Method No. 3

Owners of white fur can take note of this method. To clean white fur at home, you only need purified gasoline and an ordinary sponge. The sponge should be moistened with gasoline, and then carefully rub it over the surface of the item. Such wiping reliably removes yellowness, and this effect will be enhanced if method No. 1 is added to this method: sprinkle the fur with starch, which will absorb the unpleasant odor and remaining dirt.

Snow-white fur collar

Cleaning the collar

Some difficulties arise when cleaning a fur collar. It is impossible to wash a fur collar, as mentioned above, except in cases where the collar is part of a down jacket. This item of clothing is suitable for dry cleaning only.

  1. Before cleaning the collar, it should be unfastened from the item.
  2. Shake the collar and knock the dust out of it.
  3. Clean the pile using a hydrogen peroxide solution as in method No. 2.

Blue washing is widespread in our country. It is ideal for cleaning the Arctic fox fur collar, which has a unique silver color. Simply dilute the blue in water until you get a light blue liquid and wipe your collar with a sponge soaked in the solution. This method perfectly gets rid of yellow spots and darkening.

If the fox collar from a down jacket is quite small and narrow, then you can make an exception for it and do a wet wash, but not by machine, but by hand. Take regular shampoo and dilute it with water. Shake this liquid and rub the foam over the fur. Try to touch only the villi, not the skin. After the foam has absorbed the dirt, rinse the collar with cold water, then comb it out and leave it to dry at room temperature.

White fur on shoes

Cleaning fur on shoes

The most dirt, of course, accumulates on boots: the fur here quickly loses its freshness both inside and outside. To ensure that boots with both natural and faux fur retain a neat appearance longer, it is recommended to use ordinary soda: it is intensively rubbed into dry fur until all the dirt is absorbed. Sometimes it is necessary to do several cleanses at a time to achieve complete cleansing. This method is perfect for both fur inside and outside fur, and you can clean white fur on boots with soda without much effort.

Here are a few more rules that will help you clean natural fur correctly.

  1. Do not store fur near dyed fabrics.
  2. It is not recommended to wash fur, but if you decide to take this step, use only cold water and do not wring out the item.
  3. Do not dry furs near heaters - the products may shrink in size.
