Open and recharge: "disposable" spice grinders can be reused

Absolutely all spices taste better if you grind them immediately before eating. This explains the desire of housewives to reuse the spice mill. As practice shows, the first such tool in the house is disposable. But if desired, an empty jar can be filled again and again. You just need to know how to open it.

How to open a disposable grinder using boiling water

Opening a disposable jar with a mill

Pepper with a mill is often on sale. The jar is filled with large peas, but as soon as you twist the nozzle, the pepper turns into ground pepper. When the spices run out, many people try to unscrew the grinding attachment and refill the container. But this is not so easy to do - the lid rotates and does not give way.

The thing is that the nozzle on a disposable mill does not have a thread. It sits tightly on the lip of the neck. However, you can remove it:

  1. Boil the kettle and prepare a deep bowl.
  2. Fill it with boiling water and lower the mill there with the nozzle down.
  3. Wait 1-2 minutes and remove the heated pliable plastic with a simple movement of your hand.

You can open the disposable mill without heating. But then you will need to put in a lot of effort. It is better to entrust the matter to a strong man. You need to pull the nozzle towards you, turning it slowly.

Opening a disposable mill with a knife

Some try to pry off the plastic with a knife or screwdriver. This way the container also opens, but there is a high risk of injury. Is it worth the risk when there is a simple and accessible method of heating the nozzle with boiling water?

How to reuse the mill?

Once you have managed to open the mill, do not rush to fill it. First you need to prepare it for a new “life cycle”:

  1. Wash the jar and attachment with dishwashing detergent.
  2. If you plan to use other spices, you should additionally wipe the entire mill with vinegar diluted 1:1 with water. Otherwise the flavors will mix.
  3. Next you need to dry everything thoroughly. If the spices get wet, they will not grind, will clump and may become moldy.
  4. Pour your favorite spices into the jar and return the nozzle to its place with a sharp slamming motion. Check if it spins well.
  5. You can use your “disposable” mill again!

Disposable spice grinders

Most often, mills are filled with black peppercorns and coarse salt. Try experimenting. The container can be filled with different types of peppers, sugar, cinnamon, dry garlic, spicy roots and herbs.

A true gourmet does not need to explain the advantage of freshly ground spices over packaged ones. The fragrant aroma and rich taste are something you can’t refuse. You can use a disposable spice grinder several times using the plastic heating trick. But keep in mind that it is not eternal. The millstones that grind spices will become dull after the second or third filling of the jar. In the future, it’s worth taking a closer look at a reusable mill: it’s easy to pour spices into it, you can adjust the grinding fraction, and it looks much more stylish and presentable in the kitchen.

Thanks for the lesson, it will be very useful

    • Alexander

Use a hair dryer to heat it up and remove it...dry and comfortable....

    • kimmo

teach how to wash condoms in a machine? A mechanical mill for salt and pepper on Ali costs a dollar, and a kidlo of peppercorns costs 900 rubles salt...

  2. Irina

Very interesting advice, I’ll definitely try it

  3. Alexander

thank you, damn I was racking my brain on how to open it, I threw it away where you used to be

    • Sanya

10 years ago I drilled the bottom of the tiles with a drill, it still works

    • Yuri

Not a very good idea. Grinding knives are made of plastic. It inevitably crumbles and enters the body along with the grinding. It doesn't break down there. It's good if it comes out naturally. And if not? He will score everything he hits. For the same reason, I don’t use ceramic knives. The inevitable chips of the blade also enter the body and are not destroyed, unlike steel. Look at the edge of a ceramic knife at high magnification and you will see a “saw.” And where did these particles settle?

  4. Olga

Yes, I do this very conveniently and quickly, and the mills are very good and crush well. Good luck.

  5. Dmitriy

Great, I'll try it, I just threw away so much

  6. Alexander

Yeah...But messing with boiling water is not dangerous. If you really have to, it’s better to pry off the outer ring with a knife. But! Is it worth it? A disposable mill is only disposable, to grind one charge! Then the plastic millstones simply wear out and stop grinding. So, recycling advice for goons. It’s better to go to the store and buy a new mill, fortunately, there are always discounts on them somewhere and they cost a maximum of one hundred rubles.

    • Olga

Well, not everyone is as rich as you, and for example, a mill of a mixture of four peppers now costs about 300 rubles, I’d rather buy a couple of chocolates for the children with this money.

    • Alexander

Olga, you probably wash the pads, dry them and use them several times?! ))

    • Pukanov

boiling water lucci. verified. It has also been verified that refilling this herobora 5 times is enough, no more. and so, yes, you’re right, it’s better not to be a goon like this Olga, who washes gaskets.)

    • Rat Killer

Alexander, or whatever your name really is... Well, you are a freak! Have you ever thought that you should apologize for the sanitary pads? Although this is unlikely! After all, indoor writers like you are used to being rude, taking advantage of their impunity. Just think, if someone wrote such nonsense to your wife or mother! I would like to look at your shitty scoreboard at this moment.
And in general, why the hell have you forgotten in this blog if you buy a new mill every time?!
I’ll give you free advice - treat your head if it’s not too late.

  7. Alex

I pry it from the top with a screwdriver and take out the central part and then put it back in, no problem, 2-3 minutes and no need for boiling water, there is a video on YouTube (not mine)

  8. Hope

I took it off easily, but then, when I filled it with pepper and closed it, the mill spins, but doesn’t grind!!!☹️

  9. Irina

I heat it up with a hairdryer. Same result).

    • Alexander

What kind of hairdryer? I use construction material, fire is a thing! Literally

  10. Boris

Something is tricky. Mills are disposable. They are easy to disassemble by simply unscrewing the caps. The mill itself is plastic. More often it stops grinding. And it’s hard to find quality peppers. It's easier to buy a new one with several peppers

    • ALEXEI

Boris, they are telling you about the complete separation of plastic from glass

  11. Lyudmila

Thanks a lot. I tried it and it worked. Great.

  12. Basil

Pointless manipulation. The millstones of the mill are designed for one-time use, some even barely reach the end of the initial portion.
The only thing that might be useful is the jar itself without a lid. For example: for household loose small things, or a mini vase for a mini bouquet, it turns out cute...)

    • Edward

Not true. They work fine when there is a lot of pepper. As soon as it becomes small there is a feeling that they have been erased. But as soon as you add a new portion of pepper, they pray like crazy... My jar is already a year old, I refill it every month. The flight is normal.

    • Pukanov

enough for 5 times. Edik-*edik what do millstones do? are they begging? who and about what?

    • ALEXEI

Pure LIES, I use it repeatedly

  13. Galina

You can still wash plastic bags...

    • Acrylic is no longer the same

      Best comment.

    • Valera

      I still do this...

    • Sergey

      Exactly!

    • Your father

Why not . The world is already littered with plastic. The point here is not about saving, but about making a small contribution to reducing the use of plastic. The trash starts at the store.

    • Tatiana

No, it’s better to buy hundreds and then sigh about the environment….

    • ZZZZZZ

If everyone did this, the world would be cleaner.

  14. Svetlana

I always buy a mixture of peppercorns and grind them in a coffee grinder, put them in a small pepper shaker and use them. Due to the fact that everyone in our family loves pepper, it does not have time to lose its taste and aromatic qualities. And without any hassles!

    • Pukanov

and then the coffee pepper stinks, right?

  15. Olga

I also learned to pour normal soap from iHerb into the infrared dettol dispenser; the main thing is that the soap should not be thick
    Alaffia is not suitable

  16. Kuku

Folks, have you tried buying reusable mills?

    • Valera

Well, how smart and rich you are.

    • Guest

      But religion doesn’t allow them.

    • Sveta

Disposable ones break instantly, but these ones are really strong. Designed for more than one time.

  17. Valera

There is no need to scald anything, just hold it a little over the gas stove burner.

  18. Flura

The game is not worth the candle

  19. Guest

You can also refill disposable lighters

    • Valera

      I have experience. teach...

  20. Edward

What's wrong? Half the country is doing this... I’ve been doing this myself for 3 years now, and so have all my friends... this is no longer news.

  21. Anna

Thanks for the info!!! I really wanted to refill the mill with spices at my own discretion, but I didn’t know how!))).

  22. Elena

The experience is interesting. I always wanted to buy it, but the price and the disposable phone stopped me. Now I'll definitely buy it. Regarding reusable, everyone chooses their own wallet.

  23. Elina

Kamis and Katani for 100 rubles.... I haven't seen it anywhere. All from 250r. For 5 years my husband has been telling me the same thing. Everything is fine

  24. Hope

Heat the mill with a hairdryer and calmly remove it, add pepper and put on the lid.

    • Alexei

Heating with a hairdryer is much better than with boiling water... and then you don’t need to dry the mill from the water... In general, everyone decides for himself whether he needs it or not... But the method is very good.

  25. Sergey

And is it worth fussing over a couple of hundred rubles?
Time is more valuable to me.

    • Andrey

I fill it no longer than 5 minutes. Enough for almost a month. The ability to add exactly the spices I wanted. The mill lasts for a year or more. Several reusable ones are lying around in a landfill; they lasted much less. I don’t know what you’re doing, if 5 min.You can’t allocate a month.

    • Andrey

Although, now you have found time, you read unnecessary articles, write comments

  26. Dima Dima

I came across a post on Zen. Why boil something? Carefully remove the top plastic cover with a thin slotted screwdriver - it is soft. By definition - reusable! Isn't there a mixture of peppercorns in stores or is it very expensive? The pepper is clear, it is not profitable for them to sell it. The mixture can be bought on the market - for pennies!

  27. ZZZZZZ

I open the top transparent insert with a butter knife in 5 seconds. A package of pepper mixture costs 50-70 rubles, it is enough for 3 full refills of the mill. A new pepper grinder costs 200-280 rubles. One mill is enough for 6-7 refills. And one more aspect that is personally important to me is that a piece of plastic like a mill will take 500 years to decompose, glass - 1000 years! If everyone uses the mill several times, the full PPC will come several centuries later.

  28. Victoria

Thank you, useful video. You can try it, I hope it turns out just as easy.

  29. Alex

Alexander seems to be living on his mother’s pension, but the girls are ashamed to write like that.

  30. Nikolay

    I don't see the point.
After using the first contents, it no longer grinds very well. The knives there are not self-sharpening and by the end of the first content it doesn’t grind very well.
If the goal of saving has already appeared. It’s better to buy a good mill once, and spices separately (in bags they are 4 times cheaper than in jars)

  31. Alexander

    Good afternoon great tips)
Or you can buy a Santa Maria mill - they are already reusable. It’s definitely enough for 3-4 times, since the mill itself is ceramic and quite powerful...

  32. Valentine

I have one question - WHY????

  33. Nikolay

Thinking and doing is not harmful. Well, if your head is empty, you don’t even have anywhere to put gaskets m.......k.

  34. Victor

By the way, the question of whether someone needs it or not depends on another question: man for food, or food for man? Some people buy a full cart every day. What is this? Blockade syndrome? Show off? Gut fornication? And thanks about the mill - a revelation.
