How can two girls move furniture in an apartment without damaging the floor or overstraining themselves?
We women are an inventive people. Using various tricks, we can force a neighbor or even a passerby from the street to move the furniture in the apartment. And if no men are found, we storm the closets, heavy sofas and shelving ourselves. And they move not from the heroic strength (where does fragile girls get it from), but with the help of various tricks.
How to rearrange your apartment with gentle feminine hands
I'll start with some background. During my student years, my friend and I rented an apartment. The city is alien, the apartment is littered with rubbish, the neighbors are only old women. But we were happy about this too after the cramped dorm. I wanted my own corner, cozy, homely. And for this it was necessary to clear out all the garbage and make a complete rearrangement. The owners fully supported us. True, only morally. Like, come on girls, well done.
Full of enthusiasm, we set to work. Unsophisticated by experience, we tried to drag the cabinet from one room to another along the floor without any preparation. Never do this! The coating is torn or at best scratched.
Here's how to do it:
- Lighten the load. You need to remove all the contents from the furniture. I'm always too lazy to do this. But it’s better to overcome yourself than to think and guess, than to clean up the scratches on the floor later. In the closet and cabinet, you can remove the shelves and pull out the drawers. They are quite weighty. It is also necessary to remove the removable glass elements (for safety).
- Clear the road. To move furniture, you don’t need a narrow path, but a free, wide passage. You will have to move it not in a straight line, but as if swinging from side to side. And if you also want to expand it... In general, it’s better to empty the room as much as possible.
- Wet and thoroughly soap the floor. It is much easier to move heavy furniture on a wet, slippery floor. But it is important not to slip and fall yourself.
- Slide a wet, soapy rag under the furniture. The strategy works very well with two people: one drags the furniture on a rag behind him, and the second pushes it from the opposite side. The main thing is not to rush, so that the person in front does not get crushed. As they say, the slower you go, the further you will go.
Of course, we did not develop the right strategy right away. At first we managed to damage the linoleum. But then everything went like clockwork. The rearrangement in the apartment was accompanied by jokes and jokes, and not by an old woman's grunting.
7 life hacks to help
As I grew older, I learned to move furniture around the apartment like a virtuoso.
The main thing is to ensure that the furniture slides and make it as light as possible.
You also need to understand that the most unexpected object or even product can help out in this matter. They will come to the rescue:
- Salo. My grandfather suggested the method to me. He says that previously this was the only way furniture was moved. You will need pork skin. We cut it off from the fat. We lift heavy furniture, and place a piece of sandpaper of a suitable size under the corner or legs (the pimpled side is towards the wood, and the slippery side is towards the floor). We stand on the other side and drive.
- Potato peelings. The original way.Helps kill two birds with one stone: cook dinner and move furniture without damaging the floor. Moreover, there are a couple of potatoes in every home. We wash them and clean them. We lightly moisten the peelings with water so that they slide. We put it under the furniture. We move it where needed. The method only works with light cabinets, a washing machine, etc.
- Lubrication. Some chest of drawers that is not super heavy can be rearranged like this: we outline the path of movement and lubricate the path with something very slippery. For example, VD-40 or lubricant.
- Nylon covers. If furniture has hard legs, the risk of scratching the floor increases. You can do this: put soft nylon covers on the legs, and to make them slide, generously lubricate the bottom with soap. The floor needs to be wet.
- Old jeans. Excellent replacement for a rag. You need to wet them and rub them with soap. Push it halfway under a cabinet or other furniture, leaving the pant legs outside. All. One person pushes the furniture, and the second drags it behind him on his jeans.
- Felt. If there is anything made of felt in the house (rug, felt boots, slippers), there is no need to wet or soap the floor. Dry felt glides easily over linoleum and laminate flooring, even if there is heavy furniture on top.
- Long round wooden stick (mop handle). Suitable for cabinets, cabinets or other massive furniture. The main thing here is that its length is approximately the same as the cabinet. One person tilts the furniture in the direction opposite to the movement. The second one rolls a stick into the crack. A little push and the furniture will move. When the stick rolls out from the opposite side, the maneuver will need to be repeated.
I have tried all these methods personally. Furniture on lard and felt works best (not counting the good old rag and soap). If you can lift it and insert the material, you can even do without a partner.
Know-how in moving furniture from room to room
About 3 years ago I came across an interesting thing on Aliexpress. It's called a furniture conveyor. There was a good discount and I ordered it. 4 plates on rollers and a lift cost 650 rubles. I later saw exactly the same set in Leroy for 1,100 rubles. So the goods are not in short supply. But it costs differently everywhere.
The conveyor works like this:
- Using a lift, we raise the furniture to a height of approximately 2 cm (the height of the platform with rollers).
- We push the platforms further away so they don’t slip out.
- We lift the furniture on the opposite side and place it on the remaining platforms.
- Let's take it easy. The rollers rotate in different directions and travel well on carpet, tile, linoleum, and laminate.
Since the purchase, I have always used a conveyor when I need to move something from room to room. The platforms can support weights up to 100 kg. That's why I don't even pull out the contents. Recently I rolled a barrel at the dacha weighing 60 kg. Herself. And of course it’s better to have someone insure when lifting a tall cabinet or something like that. In addition, when transporting furniture, the platforms sometimes slip out. This needs to be monitored.
Let's summarize. It is possible to move furniture without scratching the floor. Even two fragile girls can cope with the task (tested from my own experience). You can resort to folk wisdom or purchase a special conveyor. Here everyone decides for himself.
