I made a useful thing out of old jeans and a piece of cardboard - I’m sharing the result

After a merciless audit of my closet, a bunch of out-of-fashion items looked at me with pleading eyes. Of course, my heart couldn’t stand it, and I decided to give a second life to at least old jeans and sew an organizer for various little things. While searching for a good master class, I came across many other interesting ideas. But first things first.

Organizer made from old jeans

Old jeans + piece of cardboard = useful item

I think many will agree that denim is a very useful fabric. It is durable, does not crumble, and when altered it looks quite stylish. Throwing old jeans in the trash doesn't bother me. In general, it was decided to do something useful. In my case - an organizer.

How to make an organizer from jeans and cardboard?

  1. We prepare the materials: a piece of cardboard, a ribbon about 30-40 cm, a glue gun with rods, scissors and old jeans.
  2. We cut the jeans: cut off the back pockets, the belt, cut the leg along the seam to make a rectangle of fabric. We apply a piece of cardboard to the cut and circle it with a piece of soap with a margin of 5 cm. Cut it out.
  3. Glue the ribbon to the sides of the cardboard to create a loop for hanging on the wall.
  4. Now we glue a large piece of fabric, applying glue along the perimeter of the cardboard in front. I’ll say right away that you need a lot of glue. Do not be sorry, otherwise the denim will come off.
  5. Having made the cuts, we bend the denim and glue it to the back wall.
  6. Glue the belt to the bottom.
  7. Glue the pockets.I got 4 (out of 2 pairs of jeans).
  8. Ready!

How to sew a hanging organizer?

I do handicrafts, so organizing the storage of various small things is very important. And since I had accumulated a lot of jeans, the second organizer of my own making did not take long to arrive. This time I tried the pattern:

I will briefly describe the process:

  1. We cut off the legs of the jeans and cut along the seam on one side (I took my husband’s jeans, they are larger).
  2. On one section we draw a rectangle 45 by 35 cm and cut it out.
  3. Fold the second piece in half and attach a hanger. Outline with a margin of 3 cm. Cut and sew, leaving a hole at the bottom and top in the middle (it will look like a pocket for a coat hanger).
  4. Sew a rectangle to the front side of the resulting part.
  5. We sew pockets from the remaining pieces of the required sizes and shapes.
  6. The edges can be frayed or trimmed with braid (I chose the second option).
  7. At the end, all you have to do is insert the hangers - and the hanging organizer is ready.

How to sew pockets for small items?

The easiest way is to use ready-made jeans pockets: cut and sew or glue to the base. There is no need to trim the edges. If they get a little frayed, that's okay. In my humble opinion, the organizer looks even better this way.

Unfortunately, pockets on jeans tend to run out quickly. There are several ways to solve the problem:

  • Option 1. Cut out a rectangle approximately 19 by 17 cm. Fold 1 cm on each side and hem. Sew to the base on three sides. The neat pocket is ready.
  • Option 2. Take a rectangle of denim approximately 32 by 19 cm. Hem the edges. Sew to the base on 3 sides and in the center perpendicular to the bottom. You will get 2 full pockets.

The width and depth of the pockets can be varied. The general principle, I think you understand.

Don't throw away the emblems. Sew badges and all kinds of decorations from jeans onto the organizer. His appearance will only benefit from this.

Ideas for new things from old jeans

I got excited about organizers. Fortunately, the Internet is teeming with detailed master classes. For example, the next thing I have planned is a box of jeans scraps:

And I don’t plan to stop there. While I was looking for a pattern for a hanging organizer, I picked up some cool ideas. The list included:

  • rug;
  • cover;
  • apron for the garden;
  • Beach bag;
  • slippers.

Frankly, my old jeans (or rather, what’s left of them) are not enough for all the crafts. But I don't despair. I’ll go visit my dear sister and help her with the audit.

I prudently saved all the ideas I liked about crafts from old jeans - for inspiration and just so as not to forget. I present to your consideration my modest selection:

I saw many people sew beads, earrings, and pillows from old jeans. My personal opinion is that this is overkill. Practical denim should be useful. First of all, it is valued not for its beauty, but for its strength and wear resistance.

In the end, I think it is necessary to add that the work must be carried out carefully. You shouldn't expect anything good from alterations made in a haphazard way. It’s better to spend more time, but do something really worthwhile with your own hands!
