My neighbor's secret remedy for fogging up her bathroom mirror

I want to share one recipe for mirror fogging, which my neighbor and long-time friend told me a month ago. We often visit each other. I once had to spend the night with her and, accordingly, take a bath. Imagine my surprise when, after the whole procedure, I was able to clearly see myself in the mirror. The reflection hasn't dimmed at all!

A little background

My neighbor is a respected person, currently retired. She did a lot of different things in her youth. At one time she lived with a very rich Italian family as a domestic help. It was hard for her at first. And it’s not even a matter of the huge area that had to be cleaned from morning to evening, but the high demands of the hostess. One of the whims of the Italian was the cleanest mirrors in the bathroom, which did not fog up under any conditions. Many methods were tested - the old, still military, method with soap, and vinegar, and gelatin. In the end, I found the perfect recipe, which I now use.

Shaving foam and gel

Secret remedy

It is known that fogging is caused by condensation - steam that settles on surfaces. And if on the tile it does not bother anyone, then on the mirror it makes it very difficult to see. Frankly, I myself tried to deal with steam in the bathroom in different ways. One of the worst decisions was glycerin. As expected, I rubbed it on the mirror surface and filled the hot bath. Yes, the mirror fogged up much less. But within a day, dust adhered to it, and I had to wash it thoroughly.

A neighbor offered me a completely different recipe. It was... men's shaving gel! It turns out that if you rub it into a mirror, a very thin film is formed on it, which prevents the deposition of steam. However, it does not attract dirt and continues to work for just over a week. After 7–10 days, the mirror needs to be washed and wiped with gel again. How I do it:

  1. The first thing you need to do is wash the mirror. I prefer to use ammonia and half water. I pour this product into a spray bottle and generously spray the surface. Then I wipe everything dry with a microfiber cloth.
  2. Woman washing glass

  3. Now you can treat the mirror with shaving cream. A neighbor advised using the gel. Frankly, I tried both the foam and the cream. Indeed, the gel product works better. I squeeze it onto a paper towel, just a little - 2-3 drops, and quickly rub it into the surface of the mirror.
  4. Ready! Now you can turn on the hot water, close the bathroom doors and make sure that the product is working.

By the way, after discovering the miracle remedy, I decided to delve deeper into the topic. It turns out that many modern glass cleaners contain special additives that prevent fogging of the bathroom mirror. For example, Astonish Window & Glass cleaner. But, in my opinion, the effect after them does not last as long as from shaving gel.

What else can be done to make mirrors fog less?

After looking through a lot of articles, I noticed many interesting ways to reduce fogging of bathroom mirrors. For example:

  • Clean your bathroom hood regularly. The better the ventilation, the less steam settles on the mirrors.
  • Install a special fan in the hood. With it, the microclimate in the bathroom will become as comfortable as possible - it eliminates condensation, unpleasant odors, and dampness.
  • Use the shower. If you take a shower or bath with the doors closed, steam will remain inside the cabin.
  • Dishwashing detergent and shampoo are also good for keeping mirrors from fogging up.

There are probably a lot of people who like to take a hot bath, like me. The only problem is that it’s impossible to look at yourself in the mirror. Neither comb your hair properly, nor apply a mask, nor brush your teeth. And drops of condensation, which continually settle and dry out, lead to the appearance of stains and rapid contamination of the surface. Fortunately, the problem with bathroom mirror fogging can be solved. Try applying shaving gel to it - and you will be pleasantly surprised by the results!
