We choose strawberries so as not to waste money and not buy rotten ones

Last summer I had the opportunity to sell strawberries for 2 weeks, and now I know everything about this “kitchen” from the inside. It’s a pity for the people who eat plastic or rotten berries, spending a lot of money. I quit this almshouse. One plus is that now I know exactly how to choose strawberries on the market so that they are tasty and without chemicals.

Ripe strawberries

You can't fool your nose

Natural and delicious strawberries always smell! Its sweetish aroma cannot be confused with anything.

If strawberries don't make your mouth water, trust me, it's not worth buying.

Only processed berries do not smell. Chemicals kill the smell. It happens that even natural strawberries do not smell. But these are special varieties - “transportable”, “for sale”. They have little juice and sweetness. They also turn red before they can sing. And they rot so imperceptibly. You can't even tell from the outside that they're spoiled.

Buying strawberries

Small and remote

Large strawberries are attractive to the eye. That's all.

  • Firstly, large berries need more time to ripen and become full of sweetness.
  • Secondly, large-fruited varieties are bred at the expense of taste. They are usually dry inside and tasteless.
  • Thirdly, large strawberries are in most cases imported. In order to deliver it safe and sound, a special gas is sprayed. The berry lasts for weeks. And everything would be fine, but the chemicals do not bring any benefit. Hence the “allergies” and terrible poisonings.

Strawberries in stock

And the small berry, although unsightly in appearance, is often sweet and juicy.Usually it is local and does not last long.

For strawberries only in clear weather

I advise you to buy local strawberries, or those brought from nearby regions: Krasnodar, Crimea, Moscow region. The Belarusian one is also good. The tasty berry does not stay stale. They bring it and immediately sell it.

During cold spells and rains, there are no sweet strawberries. This is the pattern: sugar in berries is produced under bright sun.

Ripe berries on the counter

During the rainy season it becomes watery, and in cloudy weather it tastes fresh or sour.

5 signs that strawberries are rotten inside

It happens that strawberries look good, juicy and ripe, but when you try them, they are rotten. But if you look closely, you can find characteristic signs of damage.

  1. Excessive hardness, or, conversely, softness. The fresh berry is slightly elastic, but can be easily crushed with your fingers.
  2. Dark spots. Darkening occurs in rotten and diseased berries. They can usually be seen near the stalk.
  3. The characteristic odor is bitterish-sour or distinctly moldy.
  4. Large amount of juice. A berry lying in juice, and even in the heat, spoils almost instantly.
  5. "Sad" stalk. A recently picked strawberry has a vigorous, green tail. A limp, yellow-brown stalk usually comes from stale, rotten or simply tasteless goods.

How to choose the most delicious berry?

It is correct to buy strawberries in the morning. At the beginning of the day, they still don’t have time to crush it with a spatula. It does not fry in the sun, and does not bleed juice. It is advisable to go after it with a plastic box in order to bring it home safe and sound.

Purchased strawberries

Here's how to choose strawberries:

  1. Find out where it came from. If you are from Krasnodar or neighboring cities, immediately tick yourself.
  2. Pay attention to the aroma. It should be bright and strong, but not chemical (some sellers use flavorings).
  3. Appearance. The dark burgundy berry is not too juicy. The jam is closed with it. Table strawberries are bright red. Elongated berries are usually grown in a greenhouse, and round ones are grown in the bright sun. They are the sweetest. Tasty and ripe strawberries have yellow seeds, shiny skin, and a living, green stalk.
  4. Feel free to try the product. Choose a few berries yourself. Sometimes sellers give you something to try that is completely different from what is in the tray. As a last resort, ask to sell the berries for testing. If you are refused, this is a bad sign.
  5. Look what they give you. Several varieties can be mixed in the tray. Or good berries are laid out only on top.

If you choose strawberries, as I said, there is a 95% chance you will get pleasure. Why not 100%? It's simple. Strawberries are an unpredictable thing. At my parents' dacha I eat it from the bush. So one day she’s just a sweet bomb, and the next she’s a bit sour. But definitely without chemicals. Choose your strawberries wisely so you don’t have to pay for rot, or better yet, grow them yourself. There is nothing better than homemade strawberries grown with your own hands.
