How and with what can you quickly remove iodine stains from clothes?

Contrary to popular belief, drops of iodine solution falling on the surface of the fabric are not a death sentence. There are many recommendations on how to remove iodine from clothes using natural products or compositions based on household chemicals. These approaches have proven themselves only from the best side and have been actively used by housewives for several decades. Moreover, it makes no difference whether the stain is fresh or has long dried; in the arsenal of home remedies you can find a solution for any case.

Natural remedies to remove iodine stains

If for some reason you need to remove iodine from clothes as gently as possible, then instead of household chemicals it is better to use absolutely safe and affordable products:

  • Potato starch. You need to generously moisten the contaminated area with cool water and generously apply potato starch directly onto the stain. The area affected by iodine should turn blue. Then we wash the product and additionally treat it with powder or stain remover. The old formation will have to be left overnight under a layer of starch.

Tip: If you don’t have starch on hand, you can replace it with potatoes. Simply cut the tuber into two parts and apply it to both sides of the cloth in the area of ​​contamination, wait a few minutes for the juice to be absorbed into the cloth. Then we wash the blue area in the traditional way.

  • Soda and vinegar. Pour baking soda directly onto the unwanted formations and pour vinegar on top. We remove the item to soak for 3-4 hours. During this time, the stain should become lighter or disappear completely. Then we send the product to machine wash.

  • Milk. Allows you to quickly and without leaving any traces of iodine from any type of material. Just soak the product in the drink for 20 minutes; the fat content of the milk does not matter. After the specified time, additionally rub the damaged area with laundry soap and rinse. If necessary, run the item of clothing through one machine wash cycle at a suitable setting.
  • Lemon juice. To treat the stain, you can use fresh lemon juice or a weak solution of citric acid. Apply the finished product directly to the stain, so that the material is well saturated. We wait a few minutes, the formation should lighten right before our eyes. Then we wash the fabric in the traditional way.

In most cases, it is possible to get by using these methods. If for some reason the formations do not want to come off the surface of the fabric or leave behind obvious marks, you will have to resort to the use of more aggressive processing options.

Household chemical products

The effectiveness of the following approaches depends directly on the type of fabric and quality of the fibers. If in one case the stains come off in a few seconds, then in another you will have to try to completely remove them:

  • Acetone. Take a cotton pad, moisten it with acetone and begin to gently work the stain with blotting movements. The color intensity should decrease immediately. If this does not happen, then this option will not give the desired result.After treatment, you need to wash off the solvent and ventilate the product so that its specific smell disappears.
  • Ammonia. A suitable product for restoring white items. We dilute a tablespoon of the drug in a glass of lukewarm water. We soak a cotton pad in the resulting solution and carefully treat the stain, moving in one direction, otherwise the stain will be smeared. Then rinse the product and dry it. If traces remain, repeat the approach.
  • Denatured alcohol. Suitable for colored clothing. Apply the undiluted product to traces of iodine, wait 10 minutes and rinse the product. To be sure, after treatment, you can go over the fabric with laundry soap.
  • Sodium hyposulfite. This drug can be purchased at a photo studio. It is simply applied to the stain and removed immediately after traces of iodine disappear. After manipulation, the item of clothing must be washed in a machine using high-quality powder.
  • Vanish. The composition intended for cleaning carpets successfully removes iodine stains from clothes. It must be used strictly according to the instructions, then the contamination will go away and the quality of the product will not suffer.

When using active chemicals, you must first test the product on an inconspicuous area of ​​​​the fabric. Only in the case of complete absence of signs of shedding or damage to the fibers can the drug be used for its intended purpose.
