Make it before Intercession - 10 things that summer residents need to do
Content:
Harvest the harvest, prepare the beds, insulate the house, remove equipment, ferment cabbage... People have long tried to do all this before the Intercession. 10 things that need to be done are a kind of ancestral testament. Whether to follow it or not, everyone decides for themselves.
“Before the Intercession it is autumn, after the Intercession it is winter”
The Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary falls on October 14th. This is a significant church holiday for believers: it is based on the legend of the appearance of the Mother of God. The Intercession is a symbol of the special patronage of the Mother of God to the Russian land. There are many folk traditions associated with the holiday.
On October 14, the girls prayed for a quick marriage, saying: “Cover the damp earth with snow and me, young, with a scarf.”
People believed that on Pokrov autumn meets winter. A little more, and the first snowball will fall, dusting the ground with a white blanket, somewhat reminiscent of a wedding veil. By this day, the people had completed all gardening work and for the last time drove their cattle out to pasture. From Pokrov they began to heat the huts and organize evening gatherings.
Harvest the last harvest
Before October 14, it is necessary to remove all late root vegetables: carrots, turnips, beets. This also includes late cabbage and apples. After this, the ancestors wished the garden a warm winter.
Clean up the area
As soon as the last harvest is harvested, it's time to clear the ground of fallen leaves and carrion. Garbage can be buried deep in the ground or taken outside the garden.
You should also prepare trees for winter: cut off broken and dry branches, treat them with Bordeaux mixture against pests, and whiten the trunks.
Prepare the beds
Over the summer, the composition of the soil becomes poorer. Therefore, before the start of winter, it is enriched with organic fertilizers and dug up. You can use straw, sawdust, manure, peat and pine litter from the forest.
Shortly before the Intercession, the beds are also mulched (with strawberries, winter crops). Tubers of flowers that do not tolerate frost are dug up and transferred to the house.
Plant crops before winter
In early October, carrots, beets, dill, parsley, onions, garlic and sorrel are sown. Vegetables and herbs sprout very early in spring. The first harvest appears in March-April.
Prepare warm beds
To grow early vegetables and seedlings, beds are prepared in October: a trench is filled with manure, covered with leaves and weeds, and topped with a layer of soil (10 cm). In spring, the earth warms up quickly.
Cucumbers, tomatoes and zucchini are most often grown in warm beds.
Treat the greenhouse
At the end of the summer season, the film is removed. All parts of the greenhouse are thoroughly washed and treated with disinfectants (copper sulfate and others). You can disinfect the building using a sulfur bomb - in this case it is important to take precautions!
Remove garden supplies
By Pokrov, all water barrels are emptied and watering hoses are removed. All equipment is cleaned, disinfected and stored. You won't need it in winter.
Repair the house
An old proverb says: “If you don’t insulate the hut before the Intercession, the hut won’t be useful.” From time immemorial, people tried to complete all repair work before the cold weather: repair the roof, caulk windows and doors, increase the heap (embankment near the walls of the house).
People believed that if you heat the stove on Pokrov with apple wood, then in winter no frost will be terrible.
Ferment cabbage
It is believed that by Pokrov the vegetable reaches the peak of its juiciness. On the eve of the holiday on the waxing moon, the Russian people always chopped and fermented cabbage in large barrels. It turned out incredibly tasty and kept well all winter.
Celebrate Intercession
All of the above tasks must be completed by October 14. You cannot work during the Intercession itself. You should also put off cleaning around the house.
Intercession is one of the few church holidays on which weddings are allowed. “They meet on Pitrau, they marry on Pokrov.” The garden work is completed, 10 things are done, and many are wondering how they will while away the cold winter evenings. Why not think about love issues? And those who are already married can fully devote themselves to their family.
Of course, we must not forget the culture of our ancestors!
of course, we are Orthodox
Ma are Orthodox! Must be followed.
I do everything and go to church and read prayers every day I will plant garlic one of these days good luck to you
Tanya, it would be better if you went to school!))
Of course, this is a need of the soul.
Yes
I stick to
This is a set of rules. Did it on time and it will be fine.
I adhere to the rules that before the veil we must try to get things done at the dacha. And also at home, wash the windows, wash the curtains and put things in order after the summer work.
Yes, I try, but it doesn’t always work out, which is a shame... Work.
Why celebrate the Intercession before the Intercession????
You definitely need to do everything before the Intercession. I'm going to plant garlic. I've already removed everything. I will ferment cabbage for the winter.
The Intercession was on October 1, and the fact that the church moved the Slavic Orthodox holiday 2 weeks ahead, stealing its traditions, distorting it in its own Jewish way, is the problem of the church, not the original Orthodox Slavs! Covering is preparation for winter; on this day, frost can COVER the ground! It’s not like in Constantinople, the Holy Mother hid everyone in the temple from enemies. What does this have to do with the Slavs? Live according to the rules, make this world a better place, do not listen to those who perverted our faith, our traditions and implanted the faith of others!
The Church did not change calendars, it began to live according to the calendar adopted by the authorities.....
Crocodile, why are you reading such articles then? For what? Go and live as your ancestors commanded
I completely agree with you.
We know all this from our great-grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers
I remember how the Feast of Intercession was celebrated in the village. Funny. Songs were sung and danced. We go to church in the morning and then we can receive guests.
In Soviet times, people didn’t go to church, and if anyone did, it was on the sly
Yes, of course, you have to observe when you have time to do all this around the house, but nowadays everyone is at work, you don’t have time to do anything, and times have changed, what kind of garlic are you talking about, why is it too early to plant it, the climate has changed, it’s so warm. It used to be cold The snow could have fallen already, but now it doesn’t
Our business is gardening... how can I say it?
It would be better for your father to advise you to learn spelling.
what date is today????????????????????????
It’s +20 outside, how to plant garlic. From the end of summer to this day, not a single rain. The earth is like stone
Agree with you. I have cucumbers and tomatoes growing in a greenhouse. Should they break out and throw them out from behind the cover.
EVERYONE DECIDES FOR HIMSELF WHEN AND WHAT TO DO.
There is an inaccuracy in your article. You need to ferment cabbage on the waxing moon, and on the eve of October 14, the moon is waning. How to be? Ferment until the Intercession or wait for the waxing moon???
Well, if the moon doesn’t rise, then it’s better to ferment after the New Year
What does the waxing moon have to do with Orthodoxy? Honey, everything is mixed up in your head.
Regarding cleaning the house and garden, I agree, but here in the Krasnodar Territory, cabbage is rarely salted early in November. I do this on the waxing moon and on women's days (Wednesday, Friday, Saturday). This year we finished the sauerkraut in mid-June and didn’t throw anything away.
In general, no matter how hard the communists tried to eradicate faith from the people, they failed! I, being a university student and a Komsomol member, ran to church to bless Easter cakes on Easter, managed to pass through 2 police cordons and a Komsomol patrol. (It's the mid-sixties)
We ferment cabbage on the last Sunday of October, or they look at the weather, it is necessary that the frost is stable, and that the cabbage picks up and does not over-ferment, it sits at home for 3 days, and then it is taken to a cold place, we have a pantry.
Remnants have nothing to do with it. Church-goers also celebrate church holidays. In our country, people consider themselves Orthodox, without holding a single fast, without communion, during Holy Week they drink and party, and then they also celebrate Easter, as well as Christmas: from December 31 they drink and eat fasting, and then they celebrate Christmas. Orthodox holidays are for true believers. In other cases, it is simply profanation.
That's for sure.
And in general, I don’t understand why religious holidays are tied to the garden?
Not only is our country huge and the climate is different everywhere, but also the fact that the climate has changed has been completely forgotten.
I do everything depending on the weather. Without being tied to the calendar. Neither generally accepted nor ecclesiastical. It grows no worse than others.
Why all this dancing with a tambourine?!
There is no need to force anything on anyone. There are traditions and folk signs. Everyone decides for themselves what
when to do.
The great holiday of the Intercession, our parents revered it and taught us... we need to observe church holidays... but there is no reason to impose it, everyone lives their own way. In his own way he bears God's punishment.
Alexandra. I don't agree with you. The Lord does not punish... it is we who punish ourselves with our own deeds. Pokrov is my birthday.
