A friend told me how to peel potatoes with a vegetable peeler in half the time

Peeling potatoes is an unpleasant, tedious and time-consuming task. That’s what I thought until a friend showed me how to peel potatoes with a vegetable peeler in half the time.

Potatoes and vegetable peeler

Super fast method for peeling potatoes

There is probably no method of peeling potatoes that I have not personally tried. Attempts to somehow facilitate the process ended in disappointment every now and then. I had to go back to good old knife cleaning. Even though I cut off the peel sparingly, it didn’t work out too quickly. The knife also often slipped. The cuts on my fingers did not have time to heal.

With the purchase of a vegetable peeler, the situation improved a little. It's harder to cut yourself with it. And the potato skins come off thinner. But I spent exactly the same amount of time peeling potatoes as when using a knife (if not more).

At that moment, I didn’t even suspect that I was using the vegetable peeler incorrectly - I pulled the peeler blade across the surface, trying to peel as much peel as possible at a time. Of course, I couldn’t peel the potatoes in one motion. The remaining peel had to be cleaned off. And then remove the eyes.

I would have continued peeling potatoes if it weren’t for my friend. Once I went to visit her. Lenka was preparing dinner, and I volunteered to help. I took charge of chopping the onions (it’s better to cry than to suffer with peeling vegetables). And what I see: a friend puts a tuber in the sink and, under a small stream of water, quickly moves the vegetable peeler back and forth.

I couldn't believe my eyes. After a couple of minutes, the pan was filled with snow-white, clean tubers. “That’s it, Mikhalych!” It turns out that it is correct to move the blade jerkily without lifting it from the skin. Since then, I always use this super-fast method and treat peeling potatoes without irritation.

What else can a vegetable peeler do?

Seeing my surprise, my friend decided to tell me a few more secrets of vegetable peeling:

  • The “ears” along the edges are designed to remove eyes from potatoes. They will also help make beautiful grooves on vegetables and fruits for a holiday salad.

  • Using a vegetable peeler, you can quickly and accurately cut cheese. The slices turn out very thin and easily roll into beautiful tubes.
  • You can use a vegetable peeler to shred cabbage! To do this, you need to place the blade on the corner of the cabbage cut in half and move it lightly, without pressing, up and down.
  • Want to decorate your dessert with grated chocolate? And a vegetable peeler will cope with this task perfectly. Hold the chocolate bar at an angle. Take the device in your other hand and move it downwards with slight pressure.

And, of course, a vegetable peeler can be used to peel not only potatoes, but also zucchini, eggplant, carrots, beets, and tomatoes. In general, almost any vegetables and fruits.

Quick peeling of new potatoes

New potatoes are a different story. Its peel is very thin and easily comes off even when pressed with a finger. When I was young, my mother taught me to scrape it off with the blunt side of a knife. But, in my opinion, there are better ways.

It would be possible to remove the thin skin with a vegetable peeler, if not for one “but”. They say that it is under the peel that the main supply of useful vitamins and minerals is concentrated. The blade captures the skin along with the pulp, and all valuable substances fly into the trash bin.

Therefore, we put the vegetable peeler and knife aside and peel the young potatoes like this:

  • Method number 1. I use it for peeling small potatoes. First, I wash all the potatoes. Then I put it in a thick plastic bag. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of salt on top. It must be large (stone). I tie the bag and knead it in my hands. At the same time I’m watching my favorite TV series. After 10 minutes, I wash the potatoes under running water and let them cook.
  • Method number 2. I think many people know him. To clean large young potatoes, I use a stiff sponge or brush. Just rub the tubers, and the thin skin easily comes off. It is best to clean the tubers under running water or place a basin in front of you. Peeled potatoes need to be washed and can be boiled or baked in the oven with butter.

This is my complicated history of relationship with potatoes. I will be glad if my experience is useful to someone else. One final piece of advice: choose a vegetable peeler with a serrated blade. It does not dull as quickly as a smooth and flat one. Thanks to the teeth, this vegetable peeler easily separates the peel. With its help you can peel juicy tomatoes and kiwis, grate chocolate, and chop cabbage. Now I cook with pleasure, and I wish the same for you!
