5 proven knitting tips to prevent the ball from running away

While knitting, a ball of thread constantly tries to roll over the table or lie on the floor. To prevent the threads from “running away” and getting tangled while knitting, you can buy a special ceramic tangle. But there are a few useful DIY tricks worth trying. The result will be no worse.

Teapot

In order for the needlework to turn out neat, you should not be distracted from the knitting needles, but a ball that unexpectedly rolls behind the chair often spoils the mood of the craftswomen. An ordinary kettle will help save the situation. You should choose a container that is suitable in size so that the knitting skein can easily turn inside. The ball is placed in the teapot, and the free edge of the thread is pulled through the spout.

Such teapots will easily help you cope with scattering balls. But you should be more careful if the dishes are made of breakable material. It is better to warn your household so that no one accidentally sweeps the kettle off the table or steps on it on the floor.

Paper clip

A regular paper clip should be attached to a basket, plastic bucket or cardboard box. A special paper clip will also work. The thread is threaded through the eyelet, and nothing else will distract you from knitting.

Advice! If you don’t have office supplies at hand, a regular clothespin will save the situation. You just need to firmly secure the ends with an elastic band at the top, otherwise the thread will slip out of the clothespin.

Colander to the rescue

When knitting with thin threads with the addition of artificial fibers, the ball becomes even more slippery and causes a lot of inconvenience. In order not to be distracted by searching for a ball, you should use a colander. The thread is passed through a hole in the bottom of the dish.

This method is unlikely to be suitable for woolen threads, especially if they are wound into a large ball. The yarn will get stuck and dislodge the colander. To prevent the dishes from rattling when pulling the yarn, it is better to lay a towel or cloth mat under it.

Threads of different colors will not get tangled

Knitters who practice multicolor patterns know how often threads from different balls get tangled and intertwined with each other. Unraveling knots is time-consuming and nerve-wracking. But a regular cardboard box will help solve the problem:

  1. You should choose a box made of thick cardboard.
  2. There should be a lid that fits the size (a shoe box from under boots or boots will do).
  3. Using a knife or utility blade, you need to make openings on the top edge of the box, one for each ball.
  4. The balls are placed in a box, the thread is passed through the cut out openings. The lid closes on top.

If desired, the design can be further improved. It is enough to choose a suitable base (barbecue skewers, wooden sticks from sushi sets, thick plastic tubes). They should be cut to the height of the top edge of the box. Glue the base to the bottom using superglue or Moment. When the glue dries, these bases will serve as holders for the balls. This way the needlewoman can be sure that the yarn will not move to the side while knitting. If the height is sufficient, the work can be stored directly inside.

Advice! Instead of a cardboard box, a plastic container with a lid will do. Then the holes in the body can be drilled with a screwdriver or a tailor's awl heated on the burner. It is better to choose a container that is small in height but long. This way you can prepare holders for 4-5 skeins of yarn at once, in case you need several colors for knitting at once.

Tightly tied bag

If you don’t have time to build a “major” ball holder, even a simple T-shirt bag made of polyethylene will do. It is better to choose a small package. The film should be thick enough.
