The second life of an old sheet: we make a rug, pillowcases, and a pet bed

Try looking at the old sheet from a different angle. This is nothing more than a piece of fabric that has the right to a second life. It’s okay if holes appear here and there. If there are still “live” places on the sheet, then all is not lost.

Making a rug using the chenille technique from an old sheet

Rug in chenille technique

Chenille is a multi-layer sandwich rug. It is an imitation of a patchwork rug, but is made much faster and easier.

To make it you will need:

  • any dense fabric (jeans, felt, etc.);
  • old sheet;
  • sewing machine;
  • scissors;
  • adhesive fabric to strengthen the corners.

Progress:

  1. We decide on the size of the rug.
  2. Cut out the backing from thick fabric.
  3. We fold the sheet in 3-4 layers, apply the backing, trace it, cut along the intended line.
  4. You should get 4-5 cuts. Let's put them together.
  5. We measure the angle of 45 degrees and draw the future rug into diagonal lines with an interval of 2.5 cm.
  6. Let's sew.
  7. Cut the resulting strips in the middle. We only cut the layers of the sheet, we do not touch the backing.
  8. Glue the corners of the rug.
  9. If desired, trim with edging braid.
  10. To fluff up the flaps, wash the rug in the washing machine with a spin cycle at the highest speed.

Maintaining an angle of 45 degrees is necessary to ensure that the fabric does not fray.

New pillowcases

If you accidentally singe a relatively new sheet with an iron, re-sew it into pillowcases. It's quite easy to do this:

  1. Cut off the damaged area.
  2. Fold a whole piece of fabric in half with the right side facing inward.
  3. Attach the finished pillowcase from your pillows to it.
  4. Add 3–4 cm on three sides and 15–20 cm on one edge.
  5. Cut it out.
  6. Sew the cut on three sides by hand or by machine. Don't forget to fold the fabric so it doesn't fray later.
  7. Sew the pocket. To do this, cut the fabric along the folds by 15 cm. Fold one side and sew on the sides. Shorten the second one by 13 cm. Hem the edges.
  8. The pillowcase is ready.

Old sheets and creativity

Intact pieces of canvas can serve as material for creativity. What can be done:

  • Embroidery. Old sheets can be used for embroidery on fabric. Cut the fabric into squares and place in a hoop. Sketch out a diagram of a design or ornament. Embroider. Hang your work on the wall.Embroidery on pieces of old sheets

If you have a sewing machine, try a new technique for yourself. Embroidery will take about 30 minutes:

  • Drawing for children. Children have a special passion for drawing on walls, furniture, carpets and brand new wallpaper. Why not offer them some unwanted sheets to draw on? Unconventional techniques are not only interesting, but also useful for development.

  3. First we stitch the bottom. We stuff it through a small hole. Sew it up.
  4. We divide the edges into 8 sectors, lay the lines and fill them in the same way.
  5. Sew the outer circle with two lines and insert an elastic band or ribbon between them.
  6. We tighten the elastic when it is necessary to make sides.
