What can you use to make your own storage boxes?

Interestingly designed boxes will not only help keep things in order, but will also be an attractive interior detail. And even for those who do not really like and know how to do handicrafts, it will be easy to make such boxes, let alone real craftswomen.

The easiest way to make a storage container with your own hands is to cover an existing cardboard box with something. These can be a variety of materials.

  • Wallpaper remaining after renovation. A box designed in this way will be unnoticeable, which means it will not visually eat up space even in a small room.
  • Self-adhesive decorative film. This material is very easy to use and has a large selection of colors and textures, which makes it very popular. A big plus of such a film is that it can be wiped with a damp cloth when cleaning, the decorative coating will not be damaged, and the film itself will not come off.
  • Colored paper or cardboard. They will help you realize any fantasies and turn a simple, inexpressive box into a bright and original piece of furniture with your own hands.

If you don’t want to bother with glue, then you can use double-sided tape on a fabric or paper base to glue paper or light fabric.

An interesting and original material for decorating a decorative box is unnecessary magazines, or rather, their individual sheets rolled into tubes.Depending on the required color scheme, you can use black and white or, conversely, very bright pages.

To ensure that the tubes are the same size, it is better to screw them onto something - for example, Chinese chopsticks or cocktail straws. There is no need to glue the entire length of the magazine sheet; it is enough to do this on the last few centimeters. It is more convenient to use office glue in a pencil. It doesn't hold thick fabric well, but it's great for paper.

Next, you need to prepare the base box - if the paper tubes will be positioned vertically, then you need to glue a strip of double-sided tape to it at the bottom and top, and if horizontally, then, accordingly, along the edges of each of the side surfaces. Then the pre-wound tubes are carefully glued to the box.

Storage boxes decorated with your own hands with various cords will look interesting. Instead, knitting yarn, floss threads and any similar items that match the color can be used. Of course, attached to glue or tape, the thread will hold more firmly, but even if you just wind it tightly, attaching only the ends, then nothing bad will happen.

Advice

Baskets for storing dirty clothes must have ventilation holes, otherwise the laundry will smell unpleasant even after lying in such a box for several days.

To store towels, bed linen and similar things, you can sew a fabric box with your own hands. To ensure that its walls keep their shape well, any dense objects, even ordinary cardboard, are sewn in there. But the ideal option would be plastic canvas, which can be found in any craft store. Due to the holes, it will allow air to pass through, and thanks to the material, it will not suffer if it gets accidentally wet; it can even be washed if necessary. This plastic is easy to cut with ordinary scissors and is usually produced in the form of rectangles or circles. Accordingly, the canvas can be used for a box of absolutely any shape.

Along the edges of the box, so that they do not become frayed from constant use, there is a edging made of dark dense material.

Covering the box with fabric

Cover the box with fabric

For pasting, it is important to choose a fairly dense and rigid box, because thin walls will not support even fabric and decorative elements, not to mention the contents of heavy things like books.

Since the fabric cannot be removed from the box for washing or ironing, it is better to choose durable, non-staining materials with at least a small synthetic content so that they do not wrinkle. Before gluing the fabric, it must be washed and ironed. If it is a thin material, then to make it denser and hold its shape better, it can be starched or gelatinized. Thin fabric can be attached perfectly with double-sided tape, but thicker and heavier fabric is better placed with glue.

When cutting fabric with your own hands, you must leave allowances of at least 2-3 centimeters on each side.

Useful tips

If, when making a box with your own hands, you used not quick-drying glue, but similar PVA compounds, then they should be given time to dry and only then load the box. This will take at least a day.

To store various small things like jewelry, the boxes can be divided into cells. To do this you will need long strips of cardboard. In each, at a certain distance corresponding to the cell size, an incision is made half the width of the strip, then all the strips are inserted into the resulting grooves. This lattice of partitions does not even need to be specially attached to the walls; it will hold itself tightly enough.

Often, goods from online stores are packaged in boxes. Usually the boxes are of high quality and it’s a shame to throw them away. Thanks to the article, now I know what to do with them. I will decorate and store all sorts of small things in them.
