Why do I sprinkle flour in my kitchen sink: another secret of cleanliness

The other day a friend came to visit me. It so happened that at that moment I had just finished washing the dishes. “Why do you sprinkle flour on the sink?” – she asked in surprise. Frankly, I’ve been using this life hack for a very long time. I thought everyone knew about him.

Stainless steel sink sprinkled with flour

Why do I flour my sink?

The first thing that catches your eye when you enter the kitchen is the stove, countertop and sink. The reputation of the owner depends on their cleanliness. Greasy streaks, dark deposits or a mountain of dishes in the sink can ruin it in an instant. Be branded dirty and slobby? Well, no, this is definitely not about me.

Without unnecessary boasting, my sink is always sparkling clean. I owe this partly to the flour hack. It cleans stainless steel very quickly, and most importantly, carefully and efficiently.

Flour has the properties of a soft abrasive:

  • Removes greasy deposits without leaving any residue. Liquid detergents do not remove grease completely. Its microscopic particles still remain on the walls. And this is very unhygienic. The flour rolls off all the plaque, and the surface of the sink becomes perfectly clean.
  • Gently polishes stainless steel. Flour is gentler than baking soda and cleaning powders. It does not leave scratches or spoil the protective layer. At the same time, after rubbing, the sink shines and shines, as if it had just been taken out of the package.
  • Leaves the kitchen sink clean for a long time. The worse the sink is washed, the faster and more dirty it becomes. The remaining plaque attracts even more dirt. After cleaning with flour, you will notice that the sink continues to shine clean for several days in a row. You can just rinse it, and not scrub it every single day.

Flour in a measuring spoon in the kitchen

Terms of use

If you do not follow certain rules, this life hack can result in serious trouble: if a large amount of flour gets into the drain, a blockage will occur in the sewer. When it binds with water, it turns into a sticky substance. The paste settles on the walls of the pipes and forms a plug that blocks the drain hole. All this is accompanied by the smell of rotting. In general, it’s not very pleasant.

If you decide to use a life hack, then follow the rules:

  1. Flour dry sink only.
  2. After cleaning, collect the flour with a napkin and throw it in the trash.

Polishing a kitchen sink with flour will cost much less than using special cleaning powders or other products.

Polishing a kitchen sink with flour

Step-by-step instruction

At first, polishing may seem like it's just taking up time. But in reality everything happens very quickly. Personally, I only spend 2 minutes a week, or 8 minutes a month. Agree, this is not so much for the shining cleanliness of the sink and the reputation of a good housewife.

What am I doing:

  1. I clean the sink with dish detergent.
  2. I rinse with clean water.
  3. I wipe the surface dry with a towel. There shouldn't be a drop of water left!
  4. I take a handful of flour (about 2 tablespoons).
  5. I sprinkle it on the sink, trying to distribute it evenly over the entire surface.
  6. Rub the sink for a few minutes with a disposable towel or the hard side of a dry sponge.
  7. I collect the flour that takes on a dirty tint and throw it in the trash.
  8. I rinse the sink and dry it.

Of course, some amount of flour remains after polishing. No need to try to collect it all to the last gram.A small pinch will not harm the sewer pipes. At least I've never had any problems with clogs.

Flour is a natural and safe solution for polishing and cleaning kitchen sinks. It does not dry out the skin of the hands and does not cause allergies.

Remember the films about the invisible man. If you sprinkle it with flour, the silhouette takes on a clear outline. The same thing happens with cleaning the sink. Flour sticks to plaque, which, it would seem, is not there. By rubbing the surface with a napkin, you simply roll it up. The sink becomes perfectly clean. Personally, I am very pleased with the effect and have been using the life hack every week for many years.

How do you clean the kitchen sink?
  1. Anna

I wash with laundry soap and sometimes add baking soda and everything is fine.

    • Me and

      Me too and great

    • Julia

And you also need to first, following the author’s recommendations, wash the sink with detergent (sorry for the taffy stuff)

    • Leonid

Anya, you’re great, well, there was no other use for flour.Soap and/or soda, EVERYTHING! Tested since USSR times! The main thing is cheap and hygienic.

    • Valentina

And I suggest washing the sink with dry mustard and greasy dishes, too, and it will be comfortable in the pipes. In the USSR, in some canteens and restaurants, sinks were cleaned with dry mustard...

    • Mark Experience

Baking soda and soap, if liquid soap is even better. Flour is used for washing by those, IMHO, who
      purity and cleanliness into flour

    • Lyudmila

To clean the pipes, it’s a good idea to pour (shake out) the spent coffee into the sink. On long-distance ships they also used dry mustard to avoid unnecessary pouring of detergents into the water.

  2. Elena

Do you want some gimor? Pour flour into the sink. And you will be happy!

    • Peter K

We must try... flour... hmm... in crayfish

    • Nata

People are absolutely illiterate in everyday life and here is another “gift” - such absurdity from the author!
Everything is washed off through the drain in the sink and settles on the walls of the drain system and siphon. And how wonderfully bacteria feel in this nutritious environment for them, and how wonderfully they smell of rot!)))
And let’s talk about flour, which “Gently polishes stainless steel.” it's just a masterpiece!
Thanks to the author, I made people laugh!)))
      Aw-author!
People have long invented the wheel and other things that help us live comfortably, including household chemicals, which cost a penny and can be chosen for any need.

  3. Lika Balashova

Do you want to clog your pipes with flour? You'll get clogged!

    • Yuri

I agree to 120! If you want to clog it right away, you’ll get a bigger rash! If you want it gradually, stretch out the pleasure! The plumbers will then appreciate your efforts! For a pretty penny!

  4. Lyudmila

I look at the photo and think - what a mess... the hostess, running the sink like this and then creating hemorrhoids for yourself - how to clean the sink.

    • Lina R.

What nonsense. It's hard to imagine how this could be used. Someone joked out of boredom...

  5. Vladimir.

Not effective, clogs sewer pipes, wash with detergent, does not give such negative results.

  6. Galina

All that remains is to indicate where to take the trash can out after throwing the remaining flour into it.

  7. Alexander

How do you get rid of life hacks?! I recommend Dahl’s dictionary, they say it helps!!!!!!!!

    • Andrey.

It also bothered me. My favorite bastard. They've already turned their attention to the Anglo-Saxons. You don't have Zadornov.

  8. Love

Cleaning the sink is a problem! ? So many manipulations are written in the article! During this time, you can clean the apartment. The author was too clever. “Sanox” will easily keep your “ideal” sink in the cleanest condition.

  9. Igor

A little bit of the cheapest toothpaste - the same effect, with a pleasant smell and without any risks.

    • Svetlpnp

      Everything is correct

  10. Svetlana

    Everything is correct

  11. Faith

Dry mustard, perfectly removes grease, and is cheap and without chemicals,

    • Zhenya

I wonder where they sell dry mustard?!

    • Svetlana

Yes! Mustard powder is available at any grocery store.

  12. Glen

Nonsense! If only you had lived in those days when people were thrown into jail for three ears of wheat. The hostess got greedy.

    • Sasha

Now are those times? You probably don’t throw away plastic bags, but wash them. And you carefully collect and plant potato peelings so as not to overindulge.

  13. Vetrova

What a fool... flour is intended for something completely different... I was raised by the old generation, where bread was always taken care of, and as you know, bread is made from flour!!! There are so many simple ways to wash your sink, and the cleaning products are inexpensive, and they last a long time if you don’t let the sink get rusty, and there will be less hemorrhoids.

    • Tamara

      No need to mess up

    • Sasha

apparently the “old” generation is really rude.

  14. Ned

How can you clean your sink with flour? Horror!!! They make bread from it!
Is it really impossible to keep the sink tidy using the most common cleaning products of your choice?

  15. Ned

Do not clean the sink with flour. Horror!!! They make bread from it!
Is it really impossible to keep the sink tidy using the most common cleaning products of your choice?

  16. Nelya Nikolaevna

Are you smart enough to just wash sinks with flour? Have you tried baking bread?

  17. Galina.

Flour absorbs fat. Including from the skin of the hands. So - it dries, and how!

  18. Oksana

Such dances around the ordinary kitchen sink. .. Is it new, is that why you take care of it so much?

  19. Vladimir

She would fall to St. Petersburg...

    • TIANA

I agree... in Siege Leningrad, the author of the car wash and not a gram of bread in his mouth. There are such Painted Knots.

  20. Vladimir

The author has a sink and is in perfect condition without polishing with flour

  21. Alexander

    what a nightmare

  22. Martha

Better than dry mustard - nothing copes with grease and dirt

  23. Mila

Selena "Antifat" and you will be happy. And just a couple of drops.

  24. Ilya

Grandma, sprinkle flour on YOURSELF, rub and rinse yourself - right away to marry the PRINCE!!! You will become young!

  25. Alexandra

    I apply mustard

  26. GALINA

    ARE YOU A COMEDIAN?

  27. Victor

Try criticism first, and then write...

  28. Vladimir

Have you tried sprinkling flour on your head instead of shampoo? Helps when ridiculous ideas come to mind.

    • OK

You won’t believe it, but some...fools...spray))) too lazy to wash with water and shampoo

  29. Alya

What a horror it is to wash the sink with flour, what’s in the author’s head? None of the readers approved. My favorite comment was that the author, “Sprinkled flour on my head instead of shampoo”

    • Eeee

There is a dry hair wash, by the way.

  30. Catherine

What kind of asshole do you have to be to bring the sink to the state like in the photo on the left? Believe it or not, I have had a stainless steel sink since 1979; it was a great success to get it in the USSR.Everything is much simpler. Have you washed the dishes? set the sponge aside. Rinse the dishes with the same sponge over the sink and rinse. If the dishes were greasy, throw away the sponge. Apply a little bit of detergent or soda to a new sponge. or Pemolux. One swipe all over the sink and rinse. And you don’t have to spend even 8 minutes a month to risk your gutters.

  31. Mira

Of course, you can try, but what about flour bugs? I just got rid of them...

    • Sanya

      Poop

  32. piece of wood

Running out of soda? The same abrasive. Only unlike flour, it dissolves in water.
I use detergent from household soap, soda, mustard, toothpaste (powder). In general, it was made for dishes, but I wash everything with it. You can even wash your sneakers white.

  33. Topknot

    What a bitch

  34. novel

Poorly educated women don’t even use kumgan...

  35. Anton

    How evil you all are.

  36. Nona

A pleasant expression of opinion on a very serious topic, how to clean a sink. Very intellectual.

  37. Irina

Regarding the advice to pour flour on your head, I remembered a story from my childhood. My mother tried this method on me as a child (early 80s). One day before school, I threw a tantrum that with such a fat head I couldn’t go to school. And my mother allowed me to bathe and wash my hair only once a week (on Sunday), and more often - this is very harmful! So I walked around for 3 days with a clean head, and then with greasy hair. And then my mother (a librarian) remembered one “useful” piece of advice from the newspaper. She poured flour on my head, rubbed it into my head and began combing my long hair. This is instead of allowing a teenage girl to wash her hair and blow dry it.All this was done through my sobs; some of the flour, of course, spilled out onto the floor, but not all of it! And so, with dull hair, flour on my head and tears in my eyes, I went to school. This is one of my most nightmare childhood memories.

    • Lyudmila

Yes, it was considered harmful to wash your hair often, as it would make your hair even greasy... My friend used to do the same with flour, and I washed it once a week. This is nonsense... We didn’t have hair dryers yet in the early 80s...

  38. Aksinya

You are not even critics, you are a menagerie. It’s dangerous to even let you all out among people. Your inside is worse than a sewer after scrubbing your sink with flour.

  39. Leonid

    I agree with Aksinya.

  40. Michael

Scatter the spaghetti on the floor, or start cleaning the rugs with them

  41. Peter

And I clean the sink with carbide, and then it also removes blockages

  42. Farit

Such a fool should be judged because she washes the sink with flour. To her village for one season, so that she can feel on her back how bread gets, There’s not enough chemicals or something and such a housewife from the house is in the ass, how can you clog up the sink to such an extent, It can be seen that greasy dishes have been soaked in the sink for weeks

  43. Margarita

People! The person shared with you! If you don’t like it, don’t do it! No, you have to compete in wit to see who can offend more! Be kinder, don’t poison the atmosphere! There’s so much negativity in our lives! I’ll add on my own: wash the sink with any means, but be sure to wipe it dry - it will be clean and you won’t breed cockroaches. Please, don’t comment or give malicious advice.

    • TATIANA

      I completely agree with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Love

      Agree

  44. Tamara Ambarova

Interesting comments you can laugh at

  45. Fatima

Flour is a great thing. It also cleans the cauldron very well after deep-frying. There is no need to roll your hands in oil. Neither soap nor products remove fat properly. But the flour is perfect.

  46. Andrey

In the morning you go out, go straight to the sink and grab all the cockroaches that have come in during the night!

  47. Tamara

    No need to mess up

  48. Olga

Once a week... a handful of flour... in the trash... Somehow it cut. My great-grandfather was a miller, my great-grandmother baked bread for our soldiers throughout the war. And you…. Well, is that really possible?.. Blasphemy..((

  49. Anna

Flour can cause a clog; it is not recommended to flush it down the sink.
Baking soda + mustard = safe dishwashing liquid and wash the sink

  50. Hope

As for washing your hair and washing it with flour, of course, it’s an overstatement, but I myself personally washed a snow-white downy hat with starch, and everything was cleaned perfectly. The fluff was in perfect condition

  51. Elena

How evil you are - people, a man shared his remedy, even if it’s not so ideal in your opinion, but for a tablespoon of flour a week there are so many attacks and this is not a hungry year

  52. Blockade

Yes, it’s not a fasting time, but you don’t need to forget about the blockade 125 grams. I can’t hear when children are asked to make crafts from cereals, but then wash the sink with flour.

  53. Natalia

Life hacks, but in Russian you can’t say “I’m using advice?” We’ll soon forget all the Russian words we find...

  54. Irina

Dear mom!!! It’s so necessary to shit up the sink! No amount of flour will help, just throw out the sink!!! Ugh, how disgusting you are at just the sight of this dirt!!!! If a person shares, then there’s no need to show the shit !

  55. Tamara

When you maintain hygiene, there are no problems. I make my own paste for washing dishes, plumbing fixtures, toilets and baths. Using a knife or grater, I rub the soap, dilute it with hot water using a whisk, add baking soda in equal quantities with the soap, mix mustard powder in the same proportion. Everything washes, cleans and disinfects perfectly.

  56. Valentina

The sewer is clogged with flour! We put the remaining dough and flour in the trash!

  57. Tina

After all, you’ve already washed it with dish soap, why else use flour?

  58. Faina

What are you doing? This is bread. How can you clean a sink with bread? This is a big sin!

  59. Elmira

The idiots who insult the woman who gave advice about flour, I bake often, and it remains
There’s a little flour on the table, doesn’t that happen to you? Instead of shaking it off somewhere, shake it off
Wash it and do it as the woman advised or are you going to bake a loaf of it?
Freaks, when the bread is lying around in the trash, then do you go to the police??
