How to clean a frying pan from burnt fat and soot?
If you're tired of looking at a blackened cast iron frying pan, don't rush to throw it in the trash. There are many popular tips on how to clean a cast-iron frying pan from years of carbon deposits. Over time, it coats any dishes.
There are 2 ways to clean a frying pan from carbon deposits:
- mechanical cleaning;
- boiling method.
Mechanical cleaning is not suitable for all dishes. If the frying pan is coated with Teflon, it cannot be washed with hard sponges or abrasive powders. Aluminum or cast iron cookware can be cleaned without risk of damaging the surface. When deciding how to clean a frying pan from carbon deposits or rust, pay attention to the material from which it is made.
Traditional methods or household chemicals?
The most radical way to quickly remove black carbon deposits is to use household chemicals. Many housewives note that this is the only way they were able to restore the shine and purity of old Soviet pots.
If you decide to deal with the problem with special means, the following brands will help you:
- Amway;
- "Zepter";
- "Fairy";
- "Antinagar Hedgehog";
- "Sanita" and others.
The safest from the point of view of natural composition are Amway and Zepter. Remember that dishes with any coating absorb detergent. It is better to use household chemicals to wash the outside of the frying pan. In order to clean the bottom and walls inside, it is better to use traditional methods, they are less dangerous.
Advice

How to save old cast iron cookware?
No matter how many new saucepans or saucepans appear in the kitchen, you won’t be able to throw out an old cast-iron frying pan. She often stands out among her “relatives” by her ugly appearance. The ideal way to remove carbon deposits is to boil the following in a solution:
- soda;
- PVA glue;
- laundry soap.
The glue and soap method helps get rid of a thick layer of scale both inside and outside. Take the largest pan (the pan should not stick out of the water). Place a saucepan on the bottom of the pan, fill it with water, add 500 g of baking soda, a grated bar of laundry soap and pour in 200 ml of PVA office glue. You need to boil until layers of baked fat begin to fall off in layers to the bottom of the pan. The room should be well ventilated. After the “bath” you need to wash the frying pan from carbon deposits with a stiff brush.
The second effective method is hardening at high temperatures. To protect your kitchen from the smell of burnt fat, it is better to carry out the procedure outdoors. Before placing your cast iron skillet on the fire, remove the plastic handle.If you still decide to carry out the operation at home, use the oven. Heat it to 250 degrees, remove all plastic elements from the dish and place it inside the oven. Be sure to open the windows in the kitchen so that fumes do not settle on the walls and furniture. Once cooled, rinse the pan with water and brush.
If you want to get rid of old fat, take 100 g of table salt and 50 ml of table vinegar. Treat the walls and bottom of the saucepan with the resulting slurry. Most of the fat layer will come off.
How to clean an aluminum frying pan?
Compared to cast iron, aluminum is a very delicate and soft metal. During the cooking process, it quickly becomes covered with a layer of dark soot, which not only spoils the appearance, but is also dangerous to human health. Cleaning it with a grinder or a hard brush is strictly prohibited.
An aluminum frying pan can be cleaned in two ways:
- digestion;
- incandescence.
You can boil aluminum objects in a solution of glue, soda and soap. If you are missing some ingredients, baking soda will help get rid of burnt marks on aluminum. Assess the degree of contamination: if the frying pan has been used for several years and there is a thick layer of burnt fat on it, then the only way to clean it is boiling. Mix 300 g of table salt with 10 liters of water. Place the container in the solution until it is completely covered with water. You need to boil it for at least two hours, then it will clean both outside and inside.
The second way to save aluminum cookware is to heat sand in it. Pour sand into the saucepan until the sides are covered to the top. Heat it on gas and leave for two hours. After the specified time, you will be surprised, because along with the sand you will pour out layers of black soot.However, sand will only help remove burnt marks on the inside.
How to clean ceramic coated cookware?
Ceramic coated cookware is the safest and most convenient option for cooking. Some housewives have long ago replaced all cast-iron kitchen utensils with it. Such products are easy to clean, food does not stick to them, and they are not hazardous to health (like, for example, Teflon). But with all these advantages, light ceramic coatings often suffer from burnt fat due to the housewife’s carelessness or untimely washing of dishes.
Advice
Do not use abrasive powders to clean Teflon or ceramic coated cookware.
You can clean a ceramic frying pan from burnt dark spots using alcohol. No need to choose a hard brush, just rub the brown spots with a cotton pad soaked in alcohol and they will disappear before your eyes. If you can’t get rid of them right away, apply an alcohol cotton swab to the stain and wait 5 minutes. This method helps to quickly remove light contamination.
If you didn’t pay attention, turned away for a couple of minutes, and a pancake or sauce burned in a frying pan with a ceramic coating, alcohol will not help. To begin, pour water into the bottom and place the saucepan on gas. Let the water boil for 15 minutes. Usually, after boiling, the fumes can be easily removed with a soft sponge. If this method does not help, add a packet of citric acid to the water, but under no circumstances use soda.
Cleaning a frying pan from carbon deposits is not so difficult if you know some folk tricks. Before choosing a method, be sure to pay attention to the material from which your favorite cookware is made: while cast iron can be subjected to harsh processing, then Teflon coating and ceramics can only be cleaned with gentle means.Don’t rush to throw away your old kitchen utensils; they can easily be saved at home without spending a penny. Instead of old and blackened dishes, cleaned pots and pans will sparkle on the shelves.
Stationery glue and PVA glue are two completely different glues. And to clean dishes from carbon deposits and old grease, they use office glue or liquid glass, and not PVA.
You're right. To me. Helped. Thank you
First I'll try to boil the grease off the pan in soda and household soap, I hope to save my favorite pan
Thank you. I read it to the end. Great article. I would like to see new cleaning methods included in the description.
Alternatively, for cleaning you can also use titanium ultrasonic, or VGT, etc. They say they don't do a bad job.
