My mother-in-law asked why I changed my regular dish sponge to a silicone one, and was surprised to hear the answer

A few months ago I changed my regular dish sponge to a silicone one. Now I couldn’t be happier – washing dishes has become much more enjoyable! My new “helper” is not saturated with grease and foreign odors, bacteria do not multiply on it, and it can also serve as an oven mitt if you need to remove a hot pot or frying pan from the stove. At the same time, it costs mere pennies, and its service life is unlimited. Isn't it a miracle?

Washing a mug with a silicone sponge

Why is a silicone sponge better than a polypropylene sponge?

The polypropylene sponge seems ideal - it whips up fluffy foam, does not scratch plates and cups (unlike hard brushes), and washes off dirt well. But it has two huge disadvantages that completely cancel out all the advantages:

  • Rapid contamination. If you wash a plate of herring with it, the sponge will begin to smell like herring; Wash the plate that contained the garlic sauce - the sponge will smell like garlic. But what’s even worse is that invisible food particles get stuck in its pores and cannot be removed.
  • Spread of infections. In a humid environment, these food particles quickly rot and become a nutrient substrate for millions of bacteria. The bacteria are happy about this and multiply at the speed of sound, populating all the free space inside the sponge while it lies near the sink and waits for its turn. When it's time to wash the dishes again, we're literally transferring germs to our forks, spoons, bowls, and pots. This can be dangerous to health, because not all bacteria are “friendly” to humans. For reasons of hygiene, I never used the same sponge for several days in a row - I threw the old one in the trash in the evening, and in the morning I took a new one out of the package.

New and old dish sponges

But the silicone sponge is completely devoid of such disadvantages. The material from which it is made does not absorb odors at all, germs cannot penetrate it, and fat and food particles are easily washed off. In addition, it has several other advantages:

  • Durable. As long as I don’t destroy it physically—for example, by accidentally melting it over an open fire or cutting it with a knife—it will retain all its properties.
  • Universal. Since bacteria and dirt do not penetrate inside, it can be used to wash not only dishes, but also vegetables - carrots, potatoes, beets. Soft but elastic silicone bristles, which cover the entire surface of the sponge, perfectly clean off soil particles remaining on root crops.
  • Multifunctional. If I need to remove hot-handled pans from the stove and my cloth pot holder is missing, I use a silicone sponge. It is impossible to “kill” it in this way, because silicone can withstand high temperatures.
  • Teflon does not scratch. Previously, I had to buy special sponges for Teflon, since you can’t wash the frying pan with regular ones - the coating will quickly collapse. But silicone is suitable for everything.

  • Convenient. Polypropylene sponges come in only a few sizes - larger and smaller.Their silicone “competitors” attracted me with a variety of sizes and shapes - it’s very easy to choose one that will fit well in your hand.

As you can see, a silicone sponge is superior to a polypropylene sponge in all respects.

How to care for a silicone dish sponge?

In order for this “helper” to serve you faithfully for many years, you just need to... wash it. You can use dish soap, or you can use laundry soap. There is no need to wipe; I just hang it on a special hook near the sink, and the remaining drops of water drain off on their own.

Questions and answers

How much does a sponge like this cost?

Prices vary, on average it’s 50 rubles. There are also more expensive copies - for 300, 400 rubles, but I believe that in this case there is no need to overpay.

A regular sponge has a hard side. What about silicone?

And she has silicone “spikes”, also known as “villi”. Their hardness is closer to medium, so in order to wash dried buckwheat or mashed potatoes, the dishes should first be soaked in warm water.

You can do without a silicone sponge. But is it necessary? It costs mere pennies, but the benefits from it are worth more than one thousand rubles. I am sure that if you ever try to wash dishes with it, you will fall in love with it as much and passionately as I do. And washing pots and dishes itself will no longer be a hateful task.

  1. Olga

Nonsense, I bought a silicone sponge, it’s inconvenient to wash dishes, the dishwashing detergent is consumed many times more than with a regular sponge, it slips and is awkward to hold in your hand, it’s slippery.

    • Elena

Absolutely right. Don't throw away that sponge just because you found a use for it. I wash potatoes and carrots with it.

    • Larisa

      I agree, complete nonsense!

    • Julia

It has only one use - you can put either an ordinary sponge or soap on it to dry it)

  2. Victoria

What nonsense is this silicone sponge. I suffered with it for a week, I didn’t have enough for more, I threw it away and will never buy it again, even for 1 kopeck. It doesn’t scrub off anything, it’s slippery and uses up significantly more detergent.

  3. Natalia

A very inconvenient sponge for washing dishes. I use it at the dacha to wash young potatoes and wash cucumbers before canning.

    • Irina

I completely agree with you. I don't understand why they advertise it. I wash my bath with this sponge

  4. Lyudmila

I agree with previous negative reviews. It is inconvenient to use for washing dishes. And, indeed, much more detergent is consumed.

    • I agree with your assessment. yours ltseneneee

I agree. The ode of praise is inappropriate.

    • Elena

I agree 100%, the funds are spent 2 times more

  5. people

    agree with you

  6. Elena

This sponge didn’t excite me either, it’s very inconvenient to use

  7. Gets salty very quickly, shit

It becomes greasy very quickly, I regretted buying it.

  8. Anyuta

I agree, it’s complete nonsense. It takes a lot of detergent and doesn’t foam. I threw it away on the 2nd day.

    • Faith

The point is not in the foam. Or do you squeeze out too much toothpaste?

  9. Friend

If you fill the sink with water, immerse the dirty dishes in it and add a little detergent, you can wash them with this sponge. As an option

    • Irina

Even so, glass is absolutely impossible to wash

  10. Galina

    Nonsense, I regretted buying it

  11. Tatiana

I think that a great alternative to sponges is a dishwashing cloth from Greenway, it lasts 2 years, it washes with just water without chemicals and also with silver nanoparticles, it is double-sided, one side is soft, the other is hard scrubbing. The household items are washed. soap, costs 231 rubles, but will pay for itself in 2 years.

    • Oksana

Also nonsense. It lasted for a week, then it became all greasy, although I washed it with soap every day. Then they said you can’t wash pans with it, and neither can you wash fat. Why is it needed then? And have an extra sponge with it. They sent a video on how to boil it from fat. Horror! And not a super replacement for regular sponges for two years.

  12. Natalia

I, too, was stupid to buy this “miracle sponge”, I thought I was the only one so incompetent that I couldn’t wash dishes with a silicone sponge, complete nonsense, a waste of money, a big and fat minus for the author, that it misleads people

  13. Svetlana

I don't like the sponge... It's really beautiful

  14. Anna

I didn’t throw it away, it’s cute, it’s the color of my kitchen gadgets, it hangs on the wall... Even washing carrots is inconvenient. If it gets dusty, I’ll throw it away and hang a new one. Because I foolishly bought two at once))))

  15. Lyudmila

I have such a sponge, but I don’t wash dishes with it, it’s just inconvenient, but washing vegetables and the surface of the hob is very easy.

  16. Elena

I bought two of these sponges, they were terribly uncomfortable, I had to throw one away, the other is lying around.
For the price of silicone ones, you can buy more regular ones and change them often.

    • Faith

change often? what about the environment?

  17. Elena

I threw it away too, nonsense, it’s getting fat

  18. marina

    Sooooo bad at washing!

  19. A

I bought it and threw it away, it doesn’t wash

  20. Elena

I bought this and regretted it. Complete nonsense. Thin. The hand slips from her. So it's lying around idle.

  21. Natalia

The sponge is not suitable for any purpose. How can this be advertised?

  22. Svetlana

My most stupid and useless purchase.

  23. Tatiana

I agree with everyone, the sponge did not live up to my expectations, I will no longer fall for advertising

  24. Tatiana

Bad sponge agrees with all the negative reviews

  25. Elena

I agree with all the negative reviews.

  26. Lydia

Don't hesitate to buy! Utter rubbish!

  27. Yana

Wash the plate after yourself; silicone will do. And after cooking, frying pans, pots - here sponges with abrasive are needed. The silicone will stroke and not rub off anything. Waste of money.

  28. Angelica

I was also stupid to buy this sponge. Well, honestly, it's a waste of money. But it’s convenient for her to wash vegetables. So take it for vegetables, not for dishes

  29. Sergey

Please note, dear women, men love everything natural) This silicone has given in to you)

  30. Elena

I have never seen worse rubbish than this, to praise this silicone masterpiece, you have to be a person who has never washed the dishes.

  31. Irina

I bought this a long time ago. Suitable for anything, just not for washing dishes. With its help, you can lose all breakable dishes, everything slips out. Wash vegetables and fruits well and can be used in the bathroom. But there is no particular delight. To wash away dirt, you need to make a lot of effort.

  32. Larisa

Normal sponge. All negative reviews are due to inability to use and lack of dishwasherware.I wash non-stick frying pans that cannot be washed in PMM - it works great. Plus concern for the environment

    • Galya

at least one healthy person :)

    • Victoria

Agree with you. I've had this sponge for three years now. To her . really. I need to get used to it, I got used to it the second time)

  33. Marina

Why don’t bacteria multiply on it? running away from her beauty apparently, blessed is he who believes)

  34. Victoria

    I don't know, I haven't used this sponge

  35. Tatiana

It is impossible to wash dishes with this sponge! I tried it once and threw it away!

  36. NATALIA

    WHY PRAISE ALL NONSNESS

  37. Galina

Dishwashing sponges can be disinfected in the microwave oven in a few minutes.

    • Victoria

Eww! They stink so much afterwards

  38. Tatiana

I fell for the advertisement and also bought this sponge; by the way, it doesn’t cost a penny—77 rubles. It’s extremely inconvenient to use, slippery... In general, it’s a waste of money, I don’t recommend it!

  39. Svetlana

If you don’t like it, it doesn’t wash, it doesn’t clean, it breaks out of your hands. Disappointed

  40. Galya

“I never used the same sponge for several days in a row - in the evening I threw the old one into the trash can, and in the morning I took a new one out of the package” - tin. This is terribly not environmentally friendly!
    I use a loofah.

  41. Valentina

I don’t know why there is so much negativity about the silicone sponge. I saw the advertisement and decided to buy it and don’t regret it. It’s very convenient, uses less detergent, and this saves money. I gave it to my sister and was surprised that she liked it too. You just need to adapt and Voila!

  42. Natalia

Wash the vegetables, pet the cat's fur, but don't bother washing the dishes.

  43. Catherine.

The sponge hardly washes out the product and tries to jump out of your hands, sometimes it jumps out. For example, it cannot cope with dried buckwheat residues like a regular sponge. There are no cats or dogs.I gave it to the child to play with.

  44. Victoria

I don’t know how handy you have to be not to cope with this sponge)) I’ve been using this for three years now and have no problems
