How to quickly sharpen a grater with your own hands if it becomes dull

Modern cheap graters are stamped from mild steel, and the tool quickly becomes dull. The old favorite graters have now exhausted their resource. But you don't have to throw them away. Using available materials and 10-15 minutes, you can sharpen a grater at home.

Modern graters

Sharpening on the face

The easiest way is to run the abrasive along the front side of the grater.

For this use:

  • sandpaper;
  • unglazed circle on a ceramic, porcelain or earthenware cup.

The disadvantage of both methods is noticeable scratches on the front side of the grater.

How to sharpen a grater with sandpaper:

  1. Take a small sheet of medium “skin”.
  2. Swipe the abrasive quickly from bottom to top or left to right for 5 minutes.
  3. Grind the blades for another 5 minutes using the same movements, but using fine sandpaper.

How to use a mug to sharpen a grater:

  1. Turn the mug upside down.
  2. Holding the utensil by the handle, rub the grater along the blades with slight pressure (from the bottom edge to the top).
  3. Continue for 10 minutes.

Important
The main condition is that the abrasive should always go in one direction.

From the inside

The petal blades do not so much become dull (like knives) as they become dented and begin to cling to food worse.

Sharpen the grater from the inside

Since the reason is not so much the thickness of the float blades, but the angle at which they are located, the most effective methods will be with a needle file and a drill:

  1. A needle file of a suitable diameter is inserted into the hole of the knife and the petal is slightly bent outward, while pulling out the file - both adjustment and slight sharpening occurs along the underside of the petal.
  2. The drill is secured in a small drill or screwdriver, inserted into the hole of the knife at the angle at which the petal originally went, turn on the drill, straightening and at the same time bending the petal slightly.

Sharpening the grater

These two methods return the grater to its factory sharpness, but take 15 minutes or more, and most importantly, they require precision and accuracy.

After any sharpening, the grater must be washed to remove metal shavings.

A cup and sandpaper are the most popular and easiest methods, but they only trim the blades. Using a file or a drill and a drill, you can ideally sharpen a grater at home, but the method requires more time and accuracy.
