I show you what you can crochet from plastic bags
Putting bags in a bag is a Russian folk tradition. I used to be a collector, too, until I got the idea to knit a rug from bags with my own hands. And space will be freed up in the drawer, and a useful item will appear in the house. Products made of polyethylene do not rot, do not accumulate moisture and are very easy to clean.
How to knit a rug from bags?
For knitting you will need a large supply of polyethylene. It is advisable to choose bags of the same thickness without logos or designs.
Making yarn:
- Place the bag on the table (you can put 3 pieces together).
- Fold 3-4 times to form a long rectangle.
- If there are handles, cut them off.
- Smooth out the rectangle with a ruler.
- Using a pen we draw stripes every 2–3 cm.
- Let's line it up.
- Cut the bag into strips with a utility knife.
- We knit the “yarn”. The best way to do this is as follows:
- Roll it up into a ball.
How to make yarn is shown in detail in the video:
Now you need to decide on the pattern and method of crocheting. As a beginner, I decided to make a rug from so-called granny squares. The following scheme was taken as a basis:
This is the simplest scheme. I cast on 4 chain stitches and then alternated double crochets and chain stitches. Granny squares are knitted very quickly. The main thing is to choose a hook of the same thickness as the plastic threads.
But connecting the squares with each other turned out to be more difficult. I abandoned the idea of using single crochets and simply sewed the squares together with a needle. But you can do things differently.
Knitting a rug from start to finish is well demonstrated in the following video with a master class:

The next idea was to create a durable bag for going to the market. Probably, each of us has encountered a situation when a plastic bag breaks at the most inopportune moment. With a knitted plastic string bag you don’t have to worry about this. In addition, it is easy to clean.
At first I really liked this option:
The material used here is black garbage bags. Photo master class:
But I admit, I didn’t want to shell out money for new bags, but decided to say goodbye to the old supplies. I knitted a bag in the likeness of a rug from the same “granny squares”. I used the video master class:
- First I knitted 24 squares according to the pattern:
- I connected the squares in a column according to the instructions:
- Using a regular stitch, I knitted handles of the length I needed (8 loops wide).
- I sewed the handles to the metal rings with plastic threads, and those, in turn, to the corners of squares 1, 2, 23 and 24.
I didn’t tie the rings, but used old, multi-colored bags. However, the bag turned out surprisingly cute and bright.
7 ideas for crafts made from bags
And although it took all my supplies to create a rug and a bag, I began to wonder what else could be made from bags.
I’m sharing the ideas that I liked the most:
- Dish and shower scourer. They write that the product whips foam well and does not accumulate bacteria. It can be used as long as you like (until it breaks).
- New Year's wreath. An original and easy-to-make decoration.Polyethylene flats need to be tied to a base (wire circle), and then the wreath should be decorated with Christmas tree decorations.
- Ottoman. Why not? You can knit a bag from bags, stuff it and sew it. It turns out quickly and inexpensively. Such a pouf will always come in handy at the dacha.
- Storage basket. Baskets for toys, linen, and household chemicals are knitted from plastic bags. You can store anything in it.
- Soft bunny. Small children are very interested in rustling bags. Your little one will love this beautiful toy bunny even more! You need to sew 5 pompoms, glue on plastic eyes and ears. Ready!
- Flower hat for a matinee. If you have children and are racking your brain to create a carnival outfit, pay attention to the dandelion hat. I think this is a good option for girls:
- Easter basket. Our people prepare especially carefully for Easter. My family is no exception. In addition to painting eggs, I make my own decorations - bunnies and chickens. Next year I plan to knit this Easter basket:
Surely other crafts can be knitted from plastic yarn. For example, a Christmas tree or a snowman for school (kindergarten).
My weekend was so fruitful. I spent 3 hours knitting the rug and 3.5 hours on the bags. The warehouse with packages was dismantled, and two new things appeared in the house. Oh yes. Finally, I will give one piece of advice. Products knitted from bags turn out a little shriveled and wrinkled. To give them a neat look, turn the iron on low heat and iron through a very thick fabric. Good luck and creative success!
I'm delighted, this is wonderful for women, a wonderful find for needlework, thanks to the author, and continued prosperity
From garbage to garbage. Unless your hands and time are busy.
