How to soak salted herring quickly: in water, milk, tea

Is store-bought or homemade herring over-salted? Don't rush to throw away fresh product! Try soaking the herring in milk, tea or plain water. The fish will quickly acquire the taste you want.

Why soak

Housewives soak over-salted fish not only to correct the taste, because some people like an abundance of spices. Such a herring threatens the figure. In a diet, fish is useful as a source of microelements, proteins and fats, but only with a minimum amount of spices. And salty foods only increase our appetite, forcing us to eat more than we need.

Finally, salt has an unpleasant tendency to deposit and retain water, which causes swelling. You need to soak the fish thoroughly before serving it to children 7-12 years old.

Why oversalt?
In the old days and in fishing villages, salting was and is carried out to the extreme on purpose - this extends the shelf life of the fish.

There are several ways to get rid of salt. How long will it take for fish that is too salty to taste good? An average of 1 to 12 hours is enough. It all depends on how long the salting lasted and which method was chosen.

Saving salted herring

Prepare the carcass for soaking at home: gut it, remove the head, fins, scales, and cut into pieces. Before dipping into the solution, rinse the product to remove excess salt from the skin.

Salted fish

Method one - soaking in milk:

  1. Please note that such resuscitation will affect the taste of the herring and make the pulp slightly milky. The fish will be very tasty with a side dish of vegetables, especially boiled potatoes.
  2. Cut the carcass in half or into pieces and immerse in cold milk. Put everything in the refrigerator.
  3. Replace the portion of milk with a new one 2-3 times per procedure.
  4. After 4-5 hours you can try. If necessary, leave for a couple more hours.

For some housewives, using milk seems wasteful.

Fish in milk

Try to return the fish to normal taste using water and vinegar essence:

  1. Mix cold water with 70% acetic acid in a ratio of 10 to 1. It is this additive that allows you to soak the herring quickly.
  2. Immerse the fish in the solution. If the room is hot, it is better to put the container in the refrigerator.
  3. Every 2-3 hours, replace the solution that has absorbed salt with a fresh one.
  4. When the pieces float to the surface, you can taste them: the taste will be more delicate.

Water. Perhaps the fastest way to turn highly salted herring into normal one is to immerse the fish in hot, but not boiling water for a couple of minutes, and then rinse under running water for 5-10 minutes.

Advice from purity-en.htgetrid.com magazine: If you do not save water, then put the fish pieces in a colander and place them under running tap water for an hour. This soaking will not make the fillet loose and watery.

Herring is also soaked in tea. How to properly get rid of salt this way:

  1. Brew strong black tea and cool. You can add sugar.
  2. Soak the fish in cold tea for 4-5 hours. Tannins will ensure the preservation of the pulp and its shape.

Advice
When purchasing a product, always look at the salinity percentage. From 9 to 14% is strongly salted herring, below 9% is lightly salted.

It is better to eat soaked fish immediately. Sprinkle it with onion rings, add sweetened vinegar, mustard, and peppercorns.Do not forget that soaking deprives the fish not only of salt, but also of beneficial minerals. Store the product for no more than a day in the refrigerator.

I bought herring, and it was terribly salty. Soaked it in tea. There wasn't much hope that it would help. But I didn’t want to run for milk at all. And what do you think? It helped a lot. All excess salt is gone. Thanks for the way
