Culinary secret: why I wrap glass jars in foil

Wrapping glass jars in foil is a culinary trick that will help out in an unexpected situation. I use it for a variety of household tasks: cleaning silver, storing jewelry, freezing greens, sealing bags, and, of course, roasting meats and vegetables. Many people don’t even realize how versatile foil is and what useful devices can be made from it.

Why do I wrap glass jars in foil?

Similar questions are asked to me by everyone who has had the opportunity to observe cans wrapped in foil on the table. I agree, the sight is very unusual. But the explanation is simple: I use a glass jar to make baking cups out of foil.

I don't have reusable molds. And disposable ones, as is usually the case, run out at the most inopportune moment. It’s not in my rules to refuse to bake cupcakes or prepare julienne because of such a trifle. So I do this:

  1. I cut off 30 cm of food foil.
  2. I fold it in half.
  3. I place a 0.5 liter glass jar in the center.
  4. I lift the edges of the foil up.
  5. I crimp and trim the sides.

In this way you can quickly make a large number of baking dishes. Moreover, the diameter and height of the mold can be adjusted as you please.

You don't have to use glass jars. You can make blanks by wrapping glasses, shot glasses, small plates.

Homemade molds have an undeniable advantage - they do not burn at high temperatures. Aluminum sheet can withstand up to +600 °C.That is, you can safely cook on coals or a barbecue grill.

The cooking area of the mold does not need to be washed. They crumpled it into a compact ball and threw it in the trash - it's simple. And most importantly, food foil can be found in every home. You won’t have to rush to the store for cheap disposable molds.

Sometimes I wrap glass jars in foil for another purpose. You can’t buy enough nylon caps. Plus, they get lost quickly. And here the foil also helps me out:

  1. I unwind 30 cm of sheet, fold it in half, and cut it off.
  2. I put the jar on the neck.
  3. I pull it and, holding it with my fingers, twist the braid from the free edge in a circle.
  4. This results in a sealed lid.

I store jam in the refrigerator, adjika, and lightly salted cucumbers in jars with aluminum lids. If you make holes in the foil, you get a sieve for straining liquid. A lid with holes can be used to protect food from flies.

  2. I wrap silver items in foil and only then put them in the box. They never get dark for me.
  3. With a crumpled sheet you can quickly clean the frying pan, grate and skewers from carbon deposits. I soak the ball in vinegar and quickly rub the dirty areas.
