I cook culinary wooden spatulas and rolling pins - now they last a long time and look like new

Washing kitchen equipment is not difficult if you know the secrets of modern housewives and our grandmothers. For example, wooden spatulas were always boiled and done correctly. This way you can extend the life of the products and clean them from bacteria. But first things first.

What are the benefits of wooden spatulas in the kitchen?

Now the choice of kitchen accessories is huge: silicone products, metal, plastic. But wooden ones are not forgotten either. True, if earlier they were made from our Russian wood, now more and more from overseas bamboo.

But that’s not the point – the important thing is that wooden spatulas have many advantages:

  1. Wood has low thermal conductivity, so it is impossible to get burned by stirring something hot with a wooden spatula. The same cannot be said about metal objects.
  2. Wood is a soft material, so kitchen products made from it can be used with non-stick and Teflon coatings. And don't be afraid to scratch them.
  3. Wood is an environmentally friendly material. Therefore, you don’t have to worry - no toxins or other harmful substances will interact with the products.

In addition, the range of wooden kitchen products is huge and beautiful. And the cost of such accessories is even cheaper than those made of silicone or metal.

Disadvantages of wooden kitchen products

But wooden products for the kitchen also have disadvantages:

  1. Wood quickly absorbs odors. It's difficult to get rid of them.Once you cut fish on a wooden board, you will have to wash it long and hard, otherwise the fishy smell will not go away.
  2. Wood darkens over time and no longer looks as aesthetically pleasing as we would like.
  3. Chips may appear on the wood.
  4. Some products stain wood.
  5. Bacteria appear on the tree, which are difficult to get rid of.

The truth is, there is a way to deal with most of these problems. And this is boiling.

To boil or not to boil: comparing kitchen products

Cleaning a wooden board, gurney or any other product is easy. Look at the picture. How many times do you think this wooden spatula has been used?

Many will say that it is new. Because it is clean, light, bright. But in fact, this spatula has been used for several months. The owner just boiled it every 2 weeks - that’s the secret to maintaining its appearance.
Now compare these 2 objects: a spatula that was boiled and a rolling pin that was never boiled. They were purchased on the same day, but the difference is noticeable, right?

The gurney does not look nearly as neat as the spatula: in places it has darkened, become stained, and rough. This example shows how beneficial simple boiling is for wooden products.

How to clean wooden kitchen accessories

Cleaning wooden utensils is easy:

  1. Take a pan and put the products in it. It is better that the container is spacious so that the accessories fit into it entirely. But if you don’t have one, a small saucepan will do.
  2. Pour water into the pan.

  3. Place the container on the fire and bring to a boil.

  4. Leave the product in boiling water for 20-25 minutes. Then carefully, so as not to get burned, turn them over. So that the part that was not in the water ends up in it.

  5. Leave for another 20-25 minutes.

Then remove the utensils and wipe them dry. Be sure to dry thoroughly.

If this happens in the summer, you can simply cover the window sill with a clean towel and lay the items on it to dry. If in winter, then put them in the oven, preheated to 150 degrees for 20 minutes.

Of course, it will no longer be possible to restore the original appearance of a rolling pin that has never been boiled before. But look how much cleaner it has become!

Still, the spatula wins compared to the gurney. She looks much better.

You can add ingredients for cleanliness to the water in which the utensils are boiled:

  1. Half a lemon or 1 tbsp. 70% vinegar – effectively removes odors.
  2. Onion skins if the accessories are old and darkened. The husk will paint them a pleasant, natural color.
  3. 1 tbsp. hydrogen peroxide, which kills all germs and bacteria.
  4. 1 tbsp. baking soda - helps to clean utensils better.
  5. 1 tbsp. salt - removes plaque from products.

The main thing is to thoroughly rinse the utensils under running water after boiling to wash off these ingredients.

conclusions

So, what are the benefits of regular boiling for wood:

  1. All bacteria and microbes that can accumulate in the cracks of the wood and simply on its surface are killed.
  2. Unpleasant odors that wood tends to absorb are killed.
  3. Accessories retain their color, do not darken over time, and are not stained.

You can wash any wooden kitchen utensils this way, even cutting boards. Look at the spatula up close - it looks like new. And all this thanks to the careful care of the hostess.
