How to quickly defrost a refrigerator without breaking it. Tips from home appliance experts

Do you think that defrosting a refrigerator is very easy? I took out the groceries, unplugged the cord from the socket and was done.

In fact, everything is not like that. If you do not want to ruin your expensive equipment, defrost your refrigerator correctly.

Why do you need to defrost refrigerator compartments?

Some people think that defrosting is just for convenience. Is ice making it difficult to remove food from the freezer? Stop, turn off the equipment, start defrosting. And if the model is “no frost”, then there is nothing to worry about. A favorite “Samsung” or “Indesit” can work forever to the delight of its owner.

But in reality everything is different.

  • Even in a modern Bosch with a built-in ultraviolet irradiation system, colonies of putrefactive microorganisms appear. To remove them, you need to thoroughly rinse the walls of the freezer and the main compartment, not with water, but with a detergent with an antibacterial effect. This can only be done after turning off the equipment.
  • The ventilation system inside the refrigerator is periodically forgotten by small debris. The temperature changes, ice forms around the blockage, and the refrigerator begins to work worse. The easiest way to solve problems is to defrost. The ice will melt, turn into water and wash away the debris.
  • Inexpensive Atlanta Minsk and other models in the same price segment use a drip defrosting system. The condensate in them is discharged through thin tubes and flows into a special tray. If the system freezes, moisture will remain in the freezer and turn into ice. It can only be removed by defrosting the refrigerator.

Therefore, all manufacturers of household appliances recommend defrosting refrigerators.

How often should you defrost your refrigerator?

Modern equipment with No Frost, Frost Free, Full No Frost systems are turned off at least once a year for 12-24 hours. Read the instructions - they indicate the exact timing and time of the procedure.

Cleaning the refrigerator

The first generation No Frost appliances are defrosted once every 2-3 months. Such refrigerators are partially protected from ice, but frost still forms inside the system, albeit slowly.

“The old Biryusa will have to be defrosted once a month. Focus on the amount of frost. When the layer of ice exceeds the thickness of your finger, turn off the refrigerator. Do not wait until frost fills the chamber. At the same time, air circulation deteriorates and the load on the compressor increases. And so do your electricity bills.

Stages of defrosting refrigerators

In the No Frost system, frost removal is done automatically. If the thermostat detects ice inside the system, it turns off the compressor. The defrost sensor turns on the heater, warm air removes the ice, and the thermostat turns back on. This cycle repeats endlessly.

Manual defrosting is much more complicated and is carried out in several stages.

Step 1

If your refrigerator has an adjustment button, set the temperature to 0 degrees. Then turn off the equipment from the network and open all the doors wide open.

Step 2

Remove all food from the refrigerator and transfer it to a cool place. Place frozen semi-finished products in pre-prepared thermal bags. If they are not there, put the food in a large container, wrap it in a thick layer of newspapers, foil and wrap it in a blanket. Improvised thermal insulation will keep the container at sub-zero temperatures for several hours.

Step 3

If your refrigerator does not have a special container to collect condensation, place a layer of loose paper or towel underneath it. When the ice begins to melt, water will flow across the floor.

Step 4

While the chambers are defrosting, clean the refrigerator. Vacuum the back wall, remove dust and cobwebs from the grates through which freon flows. Wipe the ventilation and drainage holes with cotton swabs and wash the chambers.

Step 5

If you have a regular refrigerator with manual defrosting, clean out the drainage holes. Fill a rubber bulb or large syringe without a needle with the cleaning solution and pump it under pressure into the drain. This will remove any possible blockages.

Step 6

Clean the rubber seals with toothpaste.Apply it to a soft toothbrush or a hard cloth and rub gently, but do not stretch. If the rubber bands become deformed, they will lose their seal.

Step 7

Now wait. The natural defrosting process takes from 5 to 10 hours. You can turn off the equipment in the evening and start it in the morning.

How to quickly defrost a refrigerator

Manufacturers warn: correct defrostration is natural. And it takes at least 12 hours. But if you are in a hurry, the process can be speeded up.

Please note: exposure to hot air can damage equipment. Due to sudden changes in temperature, the plastic of the camera can become deformed and even crack. And if you overdo it too much, the tubes through which the refrigerant flows will crack. After this, the refrigerator will stop freezing and you will have to call a technician.

Weigh the risks before using the accelerated defrosting technique.

Using a hair dryer

A thick layer of ice can be melted with a hairdryer.

  • Turn on the appliance and direct a stream of hot air towards the freezer.
  • Hold the hairdryer correctly - at least 20 cm away from the camera. Move the hot air constantly and do not direct it at the rubber gasket.
  • Gradually the ice will begin to crack. Carefully move the broken ice and remove it with your hands.

Warning: Be careful. Make sure that water does not get inside the hair dryer and under no circumstances place it inside the freezer. The device may short out. At best, you will lose your hairdryer, and at worst, you will get an electric shock.

Using a fan

A slower but safer method is fan defrosting.

  • Install the device in front of the refrigerator at a distance of 0.5-1 m.
  • Direct a stream of air into the chamber. The fan will force air at room temperature into the freezer, blowing out the cold. Defrosting will accelerate 2-3 times.

Make sure that water flowing from the refrigerator does not get close to the fan cord. Do not leave equipment unattended.

Using a bowl of hot water

This is a very simple and cheap way: put a container of boiling water in the freezer.

  • Fill a suitable sized container with boiling water.
  • Place a wooden or plastic board in the chamber.
  • Place hot dishes on it. Do not place directly on plastic - due to the temperature contrast, it may burst.
  • When the water has cooled, heat it up again and place it in the chamber again.

Repeat the procedure until the ice begins to crack.

other methods

You can use a heater instead of a fan. It will be more convenient if it is a model with a fan, but a regular one will do.

A pan of boiling water can be replaced with a regular heating pad. But it will have to be changed much more often.

If there is not enough ice, wipe it with a cloth soaked in hot water. This way you defrost the camera and wash it at the same time.

It is important! Never chip or tear off the ice with your hands. This will damage the walls of the freezer and the channels in which freon circulates. At best, you will have to add refrigerant to the system. At worst, replace damaged parts. For expensive Liebherr models, such repairs cost several thousand rubles.

What not to do during and after defrosting

Some “home geniuses” use for defrosting:

  • irons included;
  • industrial hair dryers;
  • hot stones or metal utensils on the stove.

As a result, the plastic in the freezer melts and the cooling system cracks.

Heating pads are also not suitable - as soon as the ice starts to melt, the device will short out.

Never sprinkle salt on ice. This method is suitable for sidewalks and highways, but not for machinery. Household plastic will begin to deteriorate when exposed to aggressive chemicals.

Experienced technicians do not recommend defrosting the device in hot weather. During defrosting, the refrigerator will become very hot, so it will take a long time to reach the temperature. This will increase the load on the compressor and reduce the service life of the equipment.

For the same reason, you cannot load the chambers with food immediately after turning on the refrigerator. Let it cool thoroughly - about an hour. And only after that return the products to their place.

Questions and answers

How to clean the inside of the refrigerator after defrosting?

Any dishwashing detergent. Dissolve it in water, wipe the inside of the chambers and rinse thoroughly with clean water.

If you do not use household chemicals, mix water and 9% vinegar in equal proportions.

Do not use products with a strong smell! Ammonia will do a great job of removing stains, but your food will smell like ammonia for a long time. Do you need this?

Is it possible to defrost the freezer without turning off the refrigerator?

If you have a two-chamber, two-compressor refrigerator, yes. Transfer frozen food to the main area, unplug the freezer, and defrost it.

How to properly turn on the refrigerator after defrosting

Wipe the inside of the cameras thoroughly and let them dry. When the temperature of the internal walls reaches room temperature and the condensation has evaporated, turn on the device and adjust the temperature settings.

How long does it take for a refrigerator to get cold after defrosting?

At room temperature (19-20 OC) inexpensive model of “Pozis” or “Stinol” - about an hour. The more powerful Aristons and LGs can handle it in 30 minutes. Check the specifications in the manufacturer's instructions.

In summer, when it’s hot, the time it takes for the cold to set in increases. Focus on the operation of the compressor. When the appliance stops buzzing, the refrigerator is ready for use.

The refrigerator does not freeze after switching on

You start the unit, hear the sound of the compressor, but the temperature in the chambers does not drop. If these are the symptoms, the system has run out of refrigerant. Call a specialist. He will seal the leak and refill the system.

The refrigerator does not turn off after defrosting

The first 20-30 minutes is normal. The device gains cold, so the compressor runs at maximum. But if the equipment does not turn off after an hour or two, start looking for the problem.

First, check the doors - are they definitely closed? The constant flow of heat will force the compressor to work without stopping.

If the doors are closed, look at the super freeze button. Is she on fire? Disable the function and the refrigerator will return to normal mode.

If you have ruled out obvious causes, but the compressor still works, you will have to call a technician. There are a lot of possible breakdowns: the thermostat does not work, the control module is broken, leaks in the evaporator tube, problems with the compressor... Only a specialist will discover the real cause of the malfunction.

Refrigerator won't turn on

If the device does not turn on at all - even the lights do not light - there is probably a problem in the cord or connection. Somewhere a contact has become unsoldered.

Another picture is also possible: the lights are on, but the compressor does not start or starts for a few seconds and immediately turns off. In this case, it is most likely the compressor that has broken down.

Unless you're an appliance repair person, don't try to fix your refrigerator yourself. Especially if the equipment is under warranty. Contact a specialist, he will find the problem and fix everything.
