What can be made from an old newspaper - stylish interior items and more
How many amazing things can be made from newspaper: wicker baskets, vases, flowerpots, boxes, children's toys and even furniture! We present to your attention 3 needlework techniques. The main material will be a stack of old newspapers. Go!
Weaving from newspaper tubes
Old newspapers can easily be turned into weaving material. You need to cut the sheets into strips and wind them on a knitting needle. You will get a tube.
Subsequently, from the tubes you can weave:
- basket;
- flowerpot;
- caskets and storage boxes;
- varied decor;
- crafts for children for school and kindergarten.
Essentially, newspaper tubes replace vines and straw. At the same time, the material has many advantages: availability, flexibility, gluing and coloring. In order for the products to gain strength, they are coated with varnish or primer based on PVA glue.
Weaving from newspaper tubes was invented by designer Peter Clark. Since then, the direction has gained great popularity. Today there are about a thousand master classes in this technique.
Master class “basket for small items”
If you are new to newspaper weaving, we recommend starting with simple master classes. For example, with this basket for small items:
To make it you will need:
- old newspapers;
- PVA glue;
- hot glue gun;
- scissors;
- thin knitting needle (1.5 mm);
- round marker.
What do we have to do:
- Cut the unfolded sheets of newspaper into 4 pieces (horizontal strips)
- Place the knitting needle on the edge of the first strip at a 30 degree angle.
- Roll up a tube.
- Glue the free edge with PVA glue.
- Remove the knitting needle.
- Make 38 straws.
- Press the tubes to make them flat.
- Make 31 flat circles: wrap the tube around the marker, coating each turn with PVA glue.
- Hot glue the 3 circles together.
- Make 5 of these parts and glue them together. This will form the bottom of the basket.
- Cover it with newspaper tubes in 2 layers.
- Make the sides of the basket from the circles (1 row).
- Glue the tubes on top in 2 layers.
- Cut 3 tubes into 6 pieces (18 pieces).
- Pass the first strip through the 2 circles on the side of the basket and glue it together.
- Pass the second strip of newspaper through the circle and bend it over the edge of the product, glue it together.
- When you finish making the decor, grease the basket with PVA glue.

Good old papier-mâché
Translated from French, papier-mâché means “chewed paper.” It is an easily moldable substance made from paper and glue.
What is not made from papier-mâché:
- masks;
- vases;
- lamps;
- stucco;
- and even furniture.
The papier-mâché technique was first used in Ancient China. Armor and helmets were made from “chewed paper” to protect against arrows.
There are several ways to make crafts. Most often, wet paper is glued to the form in layers. Or you can dissolve old newspapers in a small amount of water, add glue and make something out of the mass.
Master class “big kinder surprise”
This is one of the most popular master classes in papier-mâché technique. A large kinder surprise is presented as a gift to children, filled with gifts or just sweets. The children's eyes simply glow with delight and happiness!
To make an egg you will need:
- old newspapers;
- white office paper;
- balloon;
- water;
- PVA glue;
- scissors;
- brush and paints.
How to make a large kinder from newspapers:
- Inflate the balloon. Let's tie it up.
- Place in a small bowl for stability.
- We cut newspapers and office paper into squares approximately 10 by 10 cm.
- We wet the white paper and place it on the ball.
- We fill all the space.
- Coat the paper with PVA glue.
- Glue newspaper squares.
- Apply glue and re-glue the old newspapers.
- In total you need to glue 1 layer of white paper, 3 layers of newspapers and make the last layer white too.
- Then the egg needs to be dried.
- For smoothness, you can apply an even thicker layer of putty, and then remove any roughness with sandpaper.
- After complete drying, you can remove the ball. You need to pierce it and pull it out, and seal the hole with a piece of white paper.
- Now we cut out the “door” through which we will put the gifts.
- At the last stage, we paint the egg following the example of the original kinder. You can make a color print and glue the cutouts.

Origami
Old newspapers can be used to create origami crafts. Children will be interested in learning how to fold an airplane, a ship, a butterfly, a star, and various animals and birds.
There are more practical uses for newspapers. You can make a trash can:
A paper bucket can be used to collect dry waste. For example, shells from nuts and seeds, pencil shavings, candy wrappers, etc. This is an excellent alternative to plastic bags, which rot for decades and greatly pollute the environment.
Master class “skullcap”
A newspaper hat will protect your head from paint and whitewash during repairs.The ability to put on a paper skullcap will also come in handy during the summer holidays. If you accidentally forgot your Panama hat, make a similar one from newspaper sheets.
You will need:
- unfolded newspaper sheets (40 by 58 cm) – 2 pcs.;
- 5 minutes time.
How to make a skullcap with your own hands is shown in the instructions:
Old newspapers themselves have no value. They clutter the house and increase the concentration of dust. But if you apply a little skill and craftsmanship, they will turn into real works of art. What to do with newspapers - throw them away or do something interesting with your own hands? The choice is yours!
