The nutritionist told how and when it is better to eat strawberries - before or after meals

A dispute broke out with my mother-in-law: when is it right to eat strawberries, before or after meals. My husband’s dear mother claims that you need to eat a hearty meal first and nothing else. Allegedly, strawberries are a dessert berry, and also allergenic. If you eat it on an empty stomach, it will cause heartburn, and it may sprinkle on children. But my nutritionist says otherwise. Who to believe?

How to eat strawberries to lose weight - before or after meals

Not long ago I turned to a nutritionist. I haven’t been able to lose those extra pounds for 5 years now. I went on diets many times. Among them, I liked the strawberry one the most. I really love sweet strawberries, I can eat kilos of them. True, it didn’t help me lose weight significantly. The nutritionist also scolded me. He says that starving and sticking to just one product does not mean following a diet.

You need to eat healthy and varied foods. Little by little, but often. You won’t be carrying a bunch of food containers to work, but there are all sorts of nuts and fruits, why not.

The nutritionist said that strawberries are not the best snack for a person losing weight. It whets the appetite. It is better to eat it immediately before meals - 15-20 minutes.

Unlike bananas or apples, strawberries do not satisfy hunger. On the contrary, a handful of berries increases appetite. Afterwards you want to eat something else.

Why do they say that strawberries should be eaten for dessert?

I remember as a child we ate strawberries at any time, both before and after meals. And there were no unpleasant sensations. All because they did not suffer from gastritis and diabetes of any kind. And I didn’t have that many allergies. Today every 3rd child has them.

People with digestive problems, prone to diarrhea, and heartburn are recommended to eat strawberries after meals and in small quantities.

The small seeds and acid in strawberries irritate the gastrointestinal tract. If you eat it on an empty stomach, excess gastric juice may be produced and diarrhea may occur. I read about this in a scientific article. Hence the mother-in-law’s moral teachings - an elderly person with a bunch of chronic diseases does not feel very good after eating strawberries on an empty stomach.

At what time is the berry healthier?

Everyone knows that strawberries contain vitamin C. That is why they are so beneficial for the immune system, blood vessels and heart. I recently learned that in terms of its content it is equal to citrus fruits. Bananas, melons and oranges with strawberries have different effects on the body. And it is better for a person to use them on a schedule.

Strawberries bring the greatest benefit in the morning, from 6 to 12.

It helps to cheer up, starts the work of the stomach and intestines. Saturating the body with vitamin C in the morning helps delay old age and strengthen the immune system. Eating berries in the evening is not so healthy. They can cause insomnia and destruction of tooth enamel (if you don’t brush your teeth before bed).

5 rules for eating strawberries

Strawberries are a favorite berry for many. But it is not as harmless as it might seem at first glance. Scientists say that its improper use can lead to the formation of kidney stones, gallstone problems, and gastritis. People with chronic gastrointestinal diseases need to be especially careful with the berry.

5 rules for eating strawberries:

  1. Drink plenty of water.
  2. Do not exceed the daily norm of 400-600 g (for an adult).
  3. Do not eat large quantities of berries at once, especially on an empty stomach.
  4. Choose ripe and natural strawberries, untreated with chemicals.
  5. If you have digestive problems, eat berries with dairy products: cottage cheese, yoghurt, cream, milk.

Dairy products contain calcium, which neutralizes acid. You can also “quench it” with slimy oatmeal.

I conducted a survey among my friends, and it turned out that in their families they eat fruit mainly after breakfast and lunch. This is not the case with me - the fruit bowl sits on the table all day and slowly gets emptied. The children, my husband and I eat from it whenever we want. I don’t want to argue with experts, but nothing bad has happened to us in all these years.
