Plants that can be planted after Trinity and get a harvest

Some of the older generation still adhere to the ban on planting in the garden after Trinity. This custom is associated with church canons and dates back to ancient times. I decided to delve deeper into this issue and find out whether it is still possible to plant something on the site after a church holiday. This topic also interested me because Trinity Sunday will be late this year - June 20th. What plants can be planted after this day in order to have time to harvest and is this permissible?

What is the reason for the landing ban?

The ban on planting after Trinity is associated with religious regulations. Immediately after this holiday comes Spiritual Day, which is considered the birthday of Mother Earth. Our ancestors were respectful and fearful of everything that the church dictated to them. Previously, no one would have thought of digging soil in the garden, loosening the soil near the plantings, or sowing seeds the day after Trinity.

Work in the garden

Today there is no strict ban on planting after a church holiday. The clergy approach work on any day with understanding; modern realities have made their own adjustments. Of course, it is better not to sow directly on Trinity and Spiritual Day, but after the holidays, freely plant crops with a short growing season, which will definitely have time to produce a harvest before the arrival of cold weather.

What can you plant in June?

June is a fertile month when you can safely plant heat-loving crops, because the threat of frost at this time has already passed, which means the plants will not freeze.

This list includes some vegetables and flowers.

cucumbers

I always plant them in the second half of June with seeds in the ground, since there is no room for growing a large number of seedlings. This crop requires a lot of heat. If night temperatures exceed +16° C, seedlings appear very quickly and the bushes begin to actively develop.

Leguminous plants

If you love beans and peas, plant them in the area after Trinity, the seeds will quickly germinate and the seedlings will begin to grow. Early varieties of legumes produce a harvest already on the 65th day from the moment of planting. Harvesting of peas and beans will be completed by early autumn.

Salads

I plant lettuces for the first time in the season in April. In June, the harvest has already been harvested, so sowing can be repeated. In hot weather, the bed with lettuce needs to be watered more often with small portions of water, then the shoots will appear quickly. In summer, the culture develops somewhat more slowly, but this is normal, because lettuce is a plant that requires a certain length of daylight hours.

Bow on feather

What gardener would refuse to grow his own green onions? A turnip from seeds will not have time to ripen before the beginning of autumn, but it will be possible to grow greens for salads one hundred percent. Onion feathers grow actively and quickly, regardless of planting time.

Radish

Everyone in my family loves this root vegetable, so we plant radishes 2-3 times per season. For summer planting, you need to choose varieties that are not prone to bolting - “Tarzan”, “Presto”, “Mercado”, “Zlata” and others.

Flowers

June is not too late to plant annual flowers. You just need to choose varieties and species that will definitely have time to bloom this season. I successfully grow forget-me-nots, poppies, asters, nasturtiums, and calendula. I plant “marigolds” not in a flowerbed, but next to vegetables to protect them from pests. Calendula repels wireworms, Colorado potato beetles, nematodes, caterpillars and ticks.

Sowing in July

July is the warmest month of the year, which, of course, benefits us gardeners. At this time, the beds were already empty after harvesting the early vegetables. Leaving empty land would be irrational. In July, I plant vegetables with a short growing season so that the harvest is definitely ripe and does not disappear with the arrival of rains and cold weather.

Greenery

In summer, we replenish vitamin reserves in the body. In this case, your own greenery will come in very handy. In July I usually plant dill and cilantro to add to salads. I also grow arugula and mustard greens. I water the beds regularly so that the taste of the greens does not become bitter.

cucumbers

In July, you can sow cucumbers again so that you can enjoy the juicy, crunchy fruits until autumn. I usually mulch the soil in the cucumber bed so that it retains moisture longer. For sowing, I choose seeds of late hybrids; they better withstand cold nights at the end of summer. At the same time, I plant the crop in a greenhouse to prolong the fruit harvest as long as possible.

Sorrel

July is the time to sow sorrel. In the first year, the grass produces only small leaves, but they can also be added to dishes as a source of vitamins. Young shoots are more valuable in this regard, as they contain a large amount of valuable minerals.

Beet

In mid-summer, beets are planted a second time. These root vegetables will not grow large, but they turn out juicy and sweet.I use these beets for salads and vinaigrettes, and I make beetroot dumplings from them. It is better to plant vegetables in July, having previously grown seedlings.

Chinese cabbage

Chinese cabbage ripens in just 45-60 days. Many people are afraid to plant it in the summer because of the tendency for arrowheads to appear. In fact, you just need to follow the sowing dates. I plant the vegetable at the end of July, when the day length is 12 hours, which is exactly what Beijing needs.

In this case, it does not go into the arrow. Early varieties are not suitable for long-term storage. If you want to preserve the harvest longer, choose mid-late and late varieties.

Cauliflower

Cauliflower can be sown until the end of July. This crop may not ripen completely due to weather conditions, but the heads of cabbage ripen well if further stored in the cellar. I choose late cabbage varieties for planting and plant them in the first ten days of the month.

Onions and perennial onions

I plant onions on turnips if for some reason I didn’t have time to do it in the spring. I use seedlings for planting. In this case, the turnip grows quickly. It is too late to plant onions in July; they need to be well cared for so that the harvest does not fail. I water the garden well and weed it regularly. The harvest of onions planted in July is suitable for quick consumption; it does not last long. Perennial onions are also sown in July. By autumn they will have grown quite a decent amount of greenery.

Onions and perennial onions

As you can see, in the summer you can plant many types of greens, vegetables and flowers on your plot, and the ban on planting plants in the garden after Trinity should be taken more as a recommendation. To speed up the ripening of crops, take care of them, then before the cold weather you can get quite a decent harvest of what you sowed.
