I stained linoleum with glue - it was easily removed in 10 minutes using regular dimexide

I used to think that it was impossible to remove glue from linoleum. At least, those around them often complained that, out of their own stupidity, they ruined the brand new floor covering by dripping “Moment” or some other similar product onto it. But one day I myself found myself in their place - when I was trying to glue the heel of my boot and made an awkward movement with my hand.

Linoleum care

Everything flashed before my eyes - the cost of repairs, the silent (and this made it doubly terrible) reproach in the wife’s gaze, and even the idea that it was necessary to lay down a newspaper first. That’s when I decided that I wouldn’t give up without a fight – I would get rid of the glue stain!

Attempt 1. Alcohol

The first chemical I came across, while panicking through the contents of all the cabinets and shelves, turned out to be medical alcohol with a strength of 96%. I doubted that he could cope with aggressive cyanoacrylate, but why not try your luck? So I generously splashed almost a third of the bottle onto the stain.

Alcohol for stains

As it turned out later, it was not in vain that he did so - alcohol slows down the hardening of the superglue, and also prevents it from penetrating deep into all the cracks and cracks. By doing this, it significantly facilitates the further fight against glue that has dripped onto the linoleum.

It is not possible to completely remove traces of Moment or Cosmofen using alcohol - it is not such a strong solvent. But if you had to deal with other sticky compounds (for example, glue for mice or flies), then ethanol copes with a bang. You just need to make a kind of compress out of it - soak gauze folded in several layers with alcohol and place it on the contaminated area of the floor.

Attempt 2. Mechanical cleaning

Noticing that the glue did not turn into a kind of monolith, but, on the contrary, remained quite soft, I tried to clean it. In order not to damage the linoleum, I used a plastic knife from a set with children's plasticine for this purpose. To my surprise, most of the stain came off easily. What was upsetting was that the mark was still very noticeable and immediately noticeable.

Attempt 3. Dimexide is not only for joints

I had to go to a hardware store and ask if they had anything in their assortment that would save me from family reproach and suspicion of crookedness. It turned out that there are special solvents for superglues, produced by the same manufacturers as the adhesives themselves.

Dimexide

They all perform their function perfectly, but the number on the price tag scares off most potential buyers. Moreover, there is a remedy that is both cheaper and no worse in effectiveness - dimexide. The same one that is sold in pharmacies and is used to treat joint pain. In addition to the ability to carry drugs into the body, it also has the ability to dissolve various chemicals, including cyanoacrylate.

I bought this same dimexide and ran home to eliminate the stain while it was “fresh”:

  1. As the store consultant advised, I first applied a couple of drops of dimexide to the glue and left it there for about five minutes.
  2. Then he put on gloves, moistened a piece of cotton cloth with dimexide and began to rub the stained area to remove all traces of “Moment.”
  3. After a minute, I added a little more solvent to the rag.

Removing stains on linoleum

It took me about five more minutes to completely get rid of the superglue droplets, for a total of ten. At the same time, the financial expenses were minimal, and almost no physical effort had to be made.

As you can see, it is quite possible to remove glue from linoleum. In this case, there is no risk of ruining the floor covering (as is the case with the use of acetone, which is often recommended on the Internet) and you do not have to cut out the damaged piece and glue a “patch” in its place.
