Why did the edge of the carpet begin to bend and how to avoid it: 5 easy ways to remove waves, creases and bruises from the rug

Curling carpet is a common problem that is not as difficult to deal with as it seems. It is enough to know a few tricks that will help you deal with the corners of the carpet in a few minutes.

Why is this happening?

Most often, the problem is associated with the very thin material of the carpet or the peculiarities of its storage before the product was laid on the floor. For example, the carpet could have been rolled up for a long time, and after laying it tends to take its previous shape. A bent corner not only looks unattractive, but can also create a danger. Without noticing it, you can stumble and fall, or drop some kind of burden. Most often, elderly people and children stumble, for whom a fall can result in injury.

How to Straighten a Curled Carpet

You can avoid bending corners in various ways. Some of them are not suitable for every occasion, but some are quite universal and can be used in any room, regardless of what material the floor is made of.

1. Soaking method

If the carpet is curled, you can straighten it using a weight and warm water. To begin with, the corner will need to be well wetted and pressed down with a weight, for example, a bucket of water or a dumbbell. The carpet must be left in this form for at least 12 hours. It should dry under natural conditions. This method is imperfect in that over time you will have to repeat the procedure, because the corner will bend again.

2. Double-sided tape

If the edge keeps curling up, and soaking did not help or you do not want to deal with water, you can use a simple and quick method - use double-sided tape.

This method has the following advantages:

  • The work is done quickly: it will take literally 5-10 minutes.
  • Guaranteed results.
  • There will be no marks left on the coating, since the adhesive tape will be located below.

This method also has disadvantages:

  • The tape does not always stick immediately to the carpet material; for example, synthetic products do not stick well.
  • Using good tape may leave traces of glue on the floor, if you ever want to move the carpet, be prepared to clean up the stains.

3. Use a thick elastic band

There is an interesting way to straighten a raised corner, this requires rubber and glue. Cut a piece of rubber and glue it to the inside of the product. You can use glue or double-sided tape. The rubber itself should be smooth and quite dense; The kind used to make door mats is suitable. It has the necessary density, while still having enough mass to force the corner to straighten. Another useful property of this solution is that the carpet will not slide or ride on the floor.

4. Nail the carpet

This radical method will help if the floor is wooden. You will need to take roofing nails with a wide head; ordinary ones will not work, as they will go right through the fabric and will not be able to hold the corner and press it down.

The method has the following advantages:

  • You will quickly and permanently solve the problem with the corner of the carpet.
  • The product will not move.

Minuses:

  • Nails will ruin the floor and leave holes in it, so if you decide to change the interior over time, you will have to do something with the boards.
  • Suitable for wood floors only.
  • Difficulties arise when cleaning: you will not be able to tear the covering off the wooden floor.

In addition, when screwing in, the threads will wrap around the self-tapping screw, and you will ruin the carpet. If you are satisfied that the carpet will be nailed down and its thickness is small, you can use a staple gun. Staples will not be noticeable, unlike nail heads of different colors. If desired, they are easy to remove and will cause minimal damage to the floor covering.

You can use a special strip that is used to press the edges of linoleum or carpet. You can buy it at any hardware store, but the disadvantages are the same: the carpet cannot be moved, the plank is visible and it forms a small hill, marks will remain in the floor if you decide to dismantle it over time.

5. Press down with furniture

Some housewives decide to get rid of a bent corner in a simple way - put furniture on it. Indeed, this method is quite effective and does not take much time, but it can have both positive and negative sides. The advantages include the following:

  • A fairly quick solution, all you need is to put something heavy on the corner, for example, a chest of drawers or a bed, a closet will do.
  • If the carpet is pressed on both sides, it will no longer roll up.
  • Looks natural.

There are also disadvantages to this solution, these include the following points:

  • If you press down only one side, the other will curl up.
  • It is not always possible to choose such a solution in the interior; for example, the displacement of the coating will be noticeable, it looks unaesthetic.
  • There will be a mark on the carpet if the furniture sits on it long enough. This means that if you want to rearrange it, the squashed corner will no longer have the same attractive appearance as before.
  • The fabric does not fade under furniture, so the base coating will become lighter over time when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. If you move the furniture, you will notice that the corner is significantly different in color.
  • Difficulties when cleaning: to clean under the carpet, you will have to move the furniture, otherwise a large amount of dust will accumulate under it.

From these factors we can draw the following conclusion: pressing down a corner with furniture can be done temporarily, but as a permanent solution this method is not the best.

How to avoid bending?

If you've just purchased a rug, you can avoid future problems by installing it correctly.

To do this, the following rules must be observed:

  1. Level the flooring before laying, dry it and clean it.
  2. Immediately seal the corners with double-sided tape, without waiting for folding to occur over time.
  3. For the first month, you should not use a vacuum cleaner; it is better to clean the surface of the pile with a soft brush.
  4. Do not use aggressive cleaning products or hard bristled brushes.
  5. When knocking out, blows should be applied from the inside; after the procedure, the product must be leveled. Avoid creases.Dust should be knocked out only by placing the product on a smooth surface, not on a fence or horizontal bar.

If you follow the operating rules, you may not encounter the problem of bending corners at all, but if this happens, use any of the suggested methods to fix the problem.
